When you run, you put stress on your knee cap and the tendons in it. If you’re not used to running long miles and attempt a long run, you will feel this pain. You will also feel it if you begin to increase your mileage too quickly.

How Can I Prevent Knee Pain
Although you canât prevent all injuries, you can take these steps to make them less likely.
- Stop exercising if you feel pain in your knee.
- If you want to make your workout more intense, always do it gradually.
- Stretch your legs before and after physical activity.
- Use kneepads to prevent bursitis, especially if you have to kneel a lot.
- Wear shoes that fit well and offer enough support.
- Keep your thigh muscles strong with regular stretching and strengthening.
- If youâre overweight, work to drop some pounds so thereâs less stress on all of your joints, including your knees.
Direct Forces And Twisting
Direct impact injuries include being struck in the knee or leg by an object such as a rock, you and a soccer teammate colliding at the knees, or a football player tackling another sideways at knee-level. Impact forces bruise and crack tissue, even bone, on a continuum from the tiniest strain or hairline crack to a full tearing of tissue or breakage of bone. Soccer, football, tennis and skiing also incur twisting forces that injure knee and leg tissue directly.

Is Surgery Ever Needed For Anterior Knee Pain
In some cases of patella instability, where the kneecap dislocates often we need to consider surgery to reconstruct the ligament which holds the patella in place.
In cases of severe arthritis of the patella, we occasionally need to consider a joint replacement if you do not respond to a compression sleeve, injections, activity modification, and physical therapy.
Patella tendonitis or a jumpers knee;will usually respond to activity modification and physical therapy.; It is not unusual for your recovery to take up to 6-8 months.; If the pain remains severe, there has been a recent interest in trying PRP injections to regenerate the patella tendon.; It is still controversial whether or not PRP injections are useful.; Surgery, although rarely needed, can be very useful in severe cases of a jumpers knee.
Where Does Your Knee Hurt
- Knee pain on the front of the jointcould be patellar arthritis or patellar tendonitis. These conditions tend to hurt when bending the knee, kneeling and/or squatting. Typically the deeper the knee bend the worse it will hurt.

When it comes to knee pain, we often tend to think first of the front and sides. But pain that comes from the back of the knee is probably every bit as common.
It would be helpful if there was a single likely reason for this! But in fact the causes of back-of-knee pain can be very diverse. You could experience it as a sudden pain or a gradual ache. There may be swelling and inflammation or none at all. You might find it difficult to fully extend your leg.
In other words we need to do some narrowing down to find out whats going on. One useful starting point is to think in terms of problems inside or outside the knee joint: in medical-speak, intra- or extra-articular causes. Lets have a look at the most common ones.
Other Injuries And Conditions
Because the knee is the largest joint in your body, it is prone to injury and strain. If you fall or bump your knee, you may experience pain from bruising. If youve fractured any of the three bones in your knee, you may experience weakness, sharp pain, or deep throbbing sensations.
Rheumatoid arthritis can present similar symptoms to osteoarthritis, but this autoimmune condition may require different treatments than joint damage caused by the wear-and-tear typical of aging.

Your knees dont have to get sore simply because you have a staircase in the house and do a lot of walking on the job, shopping, activities with the kids, etc.
In fact, the human machine was designed to walk a lot more than sit, which is why perhaps youve been hearing a lot lately of the sitting disease.
Ever hear of the walking disease? There isnt one. Think of all the walking, including over hilly terrain, that your ancient ancestors did.
Research thats been piling up over recent years shows that sitting is the new smoking.
You dont hear that walking is the new smoking.
So why, then, can both knees become chronically or intermittently sore simply from the walking you do for the activities of daily living?
Youre out of shape or obese, or Youve been training TOO hard
More likely than training too hard, you probably spend a lot of time sitting, despite feeling very active with all the errands that you run.
If you have a desk job, see if your company will let you use a treadmill desk or at least a stand-up desk.
If you sit a lot at your home computer, get a treadmill desk, especially if one at work is not possible.
Take up yoga. The various poses will force your knees and surrounding structures to become more resilient.
Take up strength training: squats, the leg press, leg extension and leg curl. Some people also find that the walking lunge reduces knee pain over time.
When both knees are sore for no apparent reason, there actually is a reason.
What Causes Chronic Knee Pain
Temporary knee pain is different from chronic knee pain. Many people experience temporary knee pain as a result of an injury or accident. Chronic knee pain rarely goes away without treatment, and it isnt always attributable to one incident. Its most often the result of several causes or conditions.
Physical conditions or diseases can cause knee pain. These include:
- osteoarthritis: pain, inflammation, and joint destruction caused by degeneration and deterioration of the joint
- tendinitis: pain in the front of the knee that is made worse when climbing, taking stairs, or walking up an incline

When Should I See A Doctor For Knee Pain At Night
In the days after knee replacement surgery or another type of injury, it is normal to expect a little pain at night. A few nights of lost sleep are not anything to worry about.
However, there are times when you should see a doctor for knee pain at night. Schedule a regular appointment if you experience the following symptoms:
- Unusual or significant swelling
There are also symptoms that warrant emergency treatment for knee pain. These include:
- Deformed appearance of the joint
- Pain that makes weight-bearing impossible
- Injury that causes your knee to make a popping sound
- Swelling that occurs suddenly
If your knee pain at night consistently interferes with sleep it could make pain during the day worse, too. When it comes to knee replacement surgery, poor sleep can also slow healing times. If pain is steady for three or four days, or intermittent for a week or two, best to schedule a follow-up with your doctor.
Exercise Program For Pain In The Front Of Your Knee :
Many of you are afraid to exercise.; Yes, some of you may have pain with a few of these exercises.; You can start with quadriceps isometric exercises, or simply dont go too low with the squat, lunge or wall sit until your strength improves.; Most of you will find that after doing these exercises 3 days/week for two weeks that your pain will start to improve. As I mentioned previously, this is a program that can take 6-12 months to fully correct the weakness pattern that led to pain in the front of your knee.; So stick with it.;;;
Squat: I like the variations that this group throws in.; You do not and should not start with 100 if you are just starting out.;;
Chair Squats are the place to start if you dont have the strength or confidence.;
Wall Sits: A great quadriceps exercise.; This video is a little mechanical, but it contains the dos and donts of how to perform a wall sit.;;
Reverse Lunges:; Easier than forward lunges.; Dont lunge back further than you can handle.; That distance will get further over time.; Focus on your front knee so it doesnt wobble back and forth.;;
Planks: This video includes a good description of the proper technique, and it gives you 10 different variations to try.;
Hamstring bridge exercise.; If this is too easy you can rest a barbell across your pelvis, or a kettlebell on your lower abdomen.;

Knee Pain: Why Do Meniscus Tears Hurt
The meniscus is a cartilage disc in the knee that does not have nerves in it so why does a meniscus tear hurt? The meniscus;can wear out and become weakened from repetitive stress and eventually tear. Your meniscus can also be torn from trauma such as;a sports injury.;The pain from a meniscus tear might go away on its own or with physical therapy, though certain parts of the meniscus do not heal on their own.;

If you havent suffered an injury, however, your doctor will want to diagnose the pain and possible causes. There are some more common causes for non-trauma related knee pain:
Either rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis can cause leave you with severe knee pain, even without a fall or injury. Osteoarthritis can be characterized by the pain and swelling you continue to feel as you age. Your joints are not indestructible, and the structure inevitably wears down over time. Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is a chronic disorder that also causes joints to swell. If you suspect RA is behind your knee pain, you might have pain in other joints, as well.

When Will My Knee Feel Better
The recovery time depends on your injury. Also, some people naturally heal faster than others.

But they can also occur in relatively inactive people who ramp up their activity too quickly.
