If you have bow legs, you can still exercise. You may want to choose lower impact exercises as these are less likely to lead to future knee problems due to a bow-legged alignment.
One of the most important things you can do is to work on keeping your legs and knees in alignment during exercise. Physical therapists call this neuromuscular training. Surgeons make an effort to balance the knee at the time of surgery. This means finding the proper size and alignment of the knee replacement so that the knee joint is not too tight, and not too loose, and so this balancing is the same with the knee straight and bent.

Different Types Of Surgery

- Cartilage restoration: Sometimes when the knee only has an isolated area of injury or wear this area can be replaced with a living cartilage graft or cells which grow into cartilage.

Signs Of Knee Replacement Failure
No one likes to hear the word failure when you are scheduled for surgery. Those of us who made the decision to have total knee replacement did so because we were looking forward to having a functional, pain-free knee.
The last thing we wanted were complications that needed additional medical care or further surgery.
Doctors are not perfect. When I was a youngster, I thought teachers, police and doctors could do no wrong. As I aged, I learned that everyone is human and can make a mistake. Even your surgeon.
There are other factors besides physician error that can cause complications after surgery. In the sections below, I will discuss some things that could go wrong during the knee replacement process.
Remember, there are several things that you can do prior to knee replacement surgery to improve the chances of a successful outcome. Building leg strength, stretching, exercising and weight management are a few pro-active steps you can do to increase the probability of success.
My experience, as well as my discussions with TKR veterans, leads me to believe that the vast majority of knee replacement surgeries have a positive outcome.
How Is An Osteotomy Done
During an osteotomy, your surgeon would cut the high end of your tibia and then reorient it.
Which procedure your surgeon chooses for you depends on the type of;deformity;of your knee.
The two basic types of osteotomies are:
- A closing wedge, in which a wedge-shaped piece of the bone is removed and the bone is realigned by closing the gap
- An opening wedge, in which the bone;is gapped open on one side to realign the bone
Once the bone is cut and subsequently realigned, your surgeon may install a metal plate and screws to hold the bones in their new positions.

Leg Length Difference After Tkr
My sister, who also has chronic venous insufficiency, had a total knee replacement at the end of February. Has been doing exercises, going to PT, but after more pains, her PT suggest she start using a cane. Pain in legs and lower back. Finally PT measured her and said her new knee leg is 1.6 inches!!! longer than the other one. She is devastated that she is now in worse pain than she was before TKR. She was told to build up the shoe of her shorter leg and find someone to add to the bottom of the shoe as well. Now she cant walk around barefoot anymore but has to put on shoes to ease the pain even a little. What can she do? Any suggestions?
