The surgeon makes an incision across the front of your knee to gain access to the patella, more commonly referred to as the kneecap. In a traditional knee replacement, the incision is usually about 8 to 10 inches long. In minimally invasive knee surgery, the incision is usually about 4 to 6 inches long. The jury is still out as to whether or not the pros of the smaller scar outweigh the cons of a smaller surgical area. Talk to your doctor about which procedure is right for you.
How Do I Get Ready For Total Knee Replacement
Ask your provider how you should plan to get ready for your surgery.
Tell your provider about any medicines you are taking, including:

What Not To Do After Knee Replacement
Do not sit in a regular bathtub because you will find it difficult to get up safely from there.
While taking shover do not reach to anything by squatting, bending.
While lying down, keep your knee straight and rest. Do not put a pillow or pad behind your knee when lying down.
Do not carry or lift heavy stuff such as large pets, tool boxes, garbage bags, laundry items or grocery bags this will put excess stress on your new knee.

When To Seek Emergency Care

Newswise Forty-nine-year-old James Benfantes knee pain got so bad he dreaded walking from the train station to his job or even standing in line. Working out in the gym became all but impossible. He decided it was time for knee replacement surgery, and he did what many people do nowadays: he went online to get the latest information.
Mr. Benfante, who lives in Yorktown, New York, says he learned that robotic-assisted surgery enables orthopedic surgeons to perform the procedure with pinpoint accuracy, and this was important to him. The FDA-approved system starts with a CT scan to create a 3D virtual model of the patients unique anatomy. During the procedure, a robotic arm assists surgeons in performing an ultra-precise knee replacement customized for each patient.
Mr. Benfante wanted a joint replacement specialist trained in the use of the robotic system and found Dr. Geoffrey Westrich, director of Research in the Adult Reconstruction and Joint Replacement Service at Hospital for Special Surgery .
With biologic fixation, many joint replacement specialists believe that loosening over time could be less likely. A total knee replacement could potentially last much longer, even for a patients lifetime, Dr. Westrich says.

What Happens During Knee Arthroplasty
The day of surgery, you will receive anesthesia to prevent pain during the operation. You will have either a regional or general anesthetic. Your anesthesia team will decide what type of anesthesia is right for you.
Knee arthroplasty takes about an hour or two. The surgical team will:
- Make an incision in the knee area.
- Remove any damaged cartilage and bone.
- Place the knee implant and position it properly.
- Secure the implant into place using cement or without cement.
- Insert a piece of polyethylene that creates a smooth, gliding surface between the metal parts of the implant.
- Close the incision.
How Soon Will I Be Up And About
The staff will help you to get up and walk about as quickly as possible. If you’ve had keyhole surgery or are on an enhanced recovery programme, you may be able to walk on the same day as your operation. Generally, you’ll be helped to stand within 12 to 24 hours after your operation.
Walking with a frame or crutches is encouraged. Most people are able to walk independently with sticks after about a week.
During your stay in hospital, a physiotherapist will teach you exercises to help strengthen your knee. You can usually begin these the day after your operation. It’s important to follow the physiotherapist’s advice to avoid complications or dislocation of your new joint.
It’s normal to have initial discomfort while walking and exercising, and your legs and feet may be swollen.
You may be put on a passive motion machine to restore movement in your knee and leg. This support will slowly move your knee while you are in bed. It helps to decrease swelling by keeping your leg raised and helps improve your circulation.

What Happens During Surgery
The surgeon will make an incision in the knee to access the joint. Next, they will remove the damaged parts of the joint. The bones will be resurfaced to better accommodate the knee implant. Cement will be used to attach the implant prosthesis to the bone. A plastic spacer will be placed between the metal femur and tibia components for smooth gliding movement. Lastly, the surgeon will reposition the kneecap in front of the knee and close the incision.
Are There Potential Complications From Partial Knee Replacement Surgery
Even though partial knee replacement is considered a minimally invasive procedure, there are still risks associated with the surgery. CALGARY Patients undergoing knee replacement surgery are recovering faster and going home sooner as a result of a new approach to this surgical procedure.
Earlier this year, Dr. Rajrishi Sharma became the first orthopedic surgeon in Western Canada to adopt a new protocol for knee replacement surgery in patients with osteoarthritis. Since then, he has used it on 20 patients at the Peter Lougheed Centre; 17 returned home same-day and the other three within 24 hours. None required hospital readmission. Before this approach, patients undergoing this surgery would typically remain in hospital for three to five days.
Knee replacement surgery can be extremely painful and have a lengthy recovery time for patients, says Dr. Sharma. This new protocol helps the patient experience less post-operative pain and have less functional restrictions, which reduces the time it takes them to walk from a few days to just several hours. This significantly impacts a patients post-surgical experience, ultimately helping them recover more quickly. These are still early days weve used this protocol for only nine months but Im pleased the results weve had to date are promising.

When Can I Get Back To My Everyday Activities After Knee Arthroplasty
Your doctor will give you specific instructions. But many people can get back to their everyday activities three to six weeks after surgery.
