How Is Kinesiology Tape Different From Conventional Strapping Tape
Rigid strapping firmly wraps around your injured structures. Most standard strapping tapes are non-elastic. They aim to provide rigid support and restrict movement. These rigid strapping tapes can only be worn for short periods, after which you must remove them to restore your circulation and mobility.
Alternatively, kinesiology tape has unique elastic properties that allow it to provide active support, protect muscles or joints, and allow a safe and functional range of motion.
Rather than being entirely wrapped around injured joints or muscle groups, kinesiology tape is applied directly over or around the periphery of troublesome areas. This non-restrictive characteristic of kinesiology taping allows most applications to continue for several days. This period reinforces therapeutic benefits to accumulate 24-hours a day for the entire time theyre worn.
You can wear kinesiology tape during intense exercise, showering or swimming. It quickly dries after a quick pat with a towel.
What Is The Recovery Time For Knee Bursitis
Everyone wants to know, how long does bursitis last? There are several types of knee bursitis and in my experience; each has a slightly different recovery time.
Types of knee bursitis include:
- Prepatellar Bursitis.
- Pes Anserine Bursitis.
- Medial Collateral Ligament Bursitis.
Prepatellar bursitis, infrapatellar bursitis, and superficial infrapatellar bursitis are all fairly transient. This means they can appear quickly out of nowhere, but also dissipate quickly if proper treatment is applied.
This type of bursitis will often come on strong for 2-3 days but will return to normal within a week. Typically, the first few days are particularly bad . This usually subsides after 48 hours. In less than a week, the knee is typically back to normal .
The other forms of bursitis can be a little more pronounced and long-lasting. This means they come on slower and are easier to see coming; however, recovery time is typically a little longer and harder to predict.
These forms of knee bursitis typically take about 3-4 days to reach their worst form and then will often persist;for 2-3 weeks in some cases.
How To Treat Bursitis Yourself
To help bring down swelling and pain you can:
- rest try not to move the joint too much and avoid activities that put pressure on it
- use ice gently hold an ice pack wrapped in a tea towel on the area for around 10 minutes at a time and repeat every few hours during the day
- take painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to ease any pain
It may also help to put extra cushions around the affected joint while you sleep, to help protect and support it.

Treatments For Knee Bursitis
Bursitis is inflammation of one or more of the small fluid-filled sacs called bursae in a joint. The inflammation can cause pain and other symptoms.
The purpose of bursae is to provide cushioning around the bones, tendons, muscles, and skin near the joints. When they become inflamed, it can cause pain and limit mobility in the joint. Bursitis is usually caused by an injury, overstressing, or repetitive use of the joint, or a joint infection.
The body has approximately 150 bursae, and any can become affected by bursitis but it occurs most frequently in the elbows, shoulders, ankles, knees, and hips. Knee bursitis often affects the kneecap or the inner side of the knee joint.
Knee bursitis most commonly occurs from excessive kneeling on hard surfaces. Symptoms usually start gradually and can get worse over time. A sharp blow to the knee can cause bursitis symptoms to come on suddenly, but this is less common.
How Can I Manage My Symptoms
- Rest your knee as much as possible to decrease pain and swelling. Slowly start to do more each day. Return to your daily activities as directed.
- Apply ice to help decrease swelling and pain. Ice may also help prevent tissue damage. Use an ice pack, or put crushed ice in a plastic bag. Cover it with a towel and place it on your knee for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times each day, as directed.
- Apply heat to help decrease pain and stiffness. Apply heat on the area for 15 to 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times each day, as directed.
- Apply compression to decrease swelling. Healthcare providers may wrap your knee with tape or an elastic bandage to decrease swelling. Loosen the elastic bandage if you start to lose feeling in your toes.
- Elevate your knee above the level of your heart as often as you can. This will help decrease swelling and pain. Prop your lower leg on pillows or blankets to keep it elevated comfortably. Do not put the pillow directly under your knee.
- Go to physical therapy, if directed. A physical therapist can teach you exercises to improve your range of motion and increase knee strength.

What Are The Symptoms Of Housemaid’s Knee
Housemaid’s knee causes pain and swelling of the affected knee. You may notice redness of the skin over the knee and your kneecap may be tender. You may also have difficulty bending your knee and difficulty kneeling and walking. If housemaid’s knee is caused by infection, you may have a high temperature .

What If It Still Doesnt Go Away
Firstly, make sure you protect yourself before resuming any kneeling activities. Use kneepads or a gardeners kneeling mat to reduce the risks of another flare up. But if your bursitis persists, there are other things we can do to help. Steroid injections are sometimes used though not routinely, since they can have a weakening effect on the tissues. Another option for a serious case of prepatellar bursitis might be a bursectomy, where parts of the tissue are carefully removed during keyhole surgery. Knee bursitis is best prevented by maintaining flexible thigh muscles and reducing your time in a kneeling position. Ice after excessive kneeling can avoid an inflammatory response, which is the first stage of bursitis.
Pacing yourself during activities that entail repeated bending or squatting is also paramount. It is vital to ensure that you take regular rest breaks between bending or kneeling and alternating them with other less aggravating activities. Mainly, you aim for an appropriate balance between rest and exercise. Weight management can play a role in the pressure exerted on lower limb joints and should be considered a long-term preventative measure.
How Do You Prevent Bursitis
You canât always prevent bursitis, but some steps can lower your risk.
- Use cushions or pads when youâre resting a joint on a hard surface, like if youâre kneeling or sitting.
- If you play sports, mix things up so you donât make the same motions all the time. Warm up and stretch before you play, and always use proper form.
- Start slowly and easily when youâre trying a new exercise or sport. As you build strength, you can use more force and do the motion more often.
- Donât sit still for a long time.
- Take breaks often when youâre making the same motions over and over again.
- Use good posture all day.
- Hip bursitis can come from having one leg longer than the other. An orthotic shoe insert can help.
- Keep a healthy body weight.
- If something hurts, stop doing it and check with your doctor.

Housemaid’s Knee Caused By Infection
If your doctor suspects that your housemaid’s knee is caused by infection, they may draw some fluid from your knee, as described above. They can send this fluid off to the laboratory for tests. Whilst waiting for the results, they may prescribe some antibiotics for you to take , or co-amoxiclav). Usually, these antibiotics can be taken by mouth. If the infection is severe, your doctor may suggest that you be admitted to hospital and given antibiotics into your veins .
When the doctor receives the results back from the laboratory after a couple of days, they may suggest that your antibiotics be changed. They should now know the antibiotic that is most likely to be effective in treating the infection.
If your symptoms do not seem to be improving despite 36-48 hours of antibiotics, your doctor may suggest that a small cut should be made on the front of your knee. This will allow the infected fluid to drain out from the bursa. The procedure may require referral to hospital but does not normally mean an overnight stay.

The best way to speed up your recovery is to follow the instructions of your physical therapist. It sounds biased, I know, but thats the truth.
The reason I say this is because treating acute knee bursitis can be tricky. Sometimes it feels like youre getting faster than expected. But, you still run the risk of making your symptoms worse.
