With knees you need to be careful not to overuse or abuse, says Etty Griffin, M.D., staff orthopedist at Peachtree Orthopedic Clinic in Atlanta. Whether it’s more hills or faster walking than you’re used to, doing too much too fast can be stressful for tissue around the knee.

Any exercise with rigorous knee bending is a possible culprit, says Griffin. Any unfamiliar activity taken on very quickly can lead to problems. Tissue needs time to heal, or microtears from overuse can cause pain.

A lopsided workout plan can also be hard on the knees. When fitness walking, some muscles are overused, while others are not used at all, says John Jay Wooldridge, Reebok master trainer. The imbalance can stress the related joints.

But don’t get the idea that knee problems are inevitable. Cross-training, stretching, and strengthening can all help knees stay pain-free. While knee pain should always be checked with a doctor to rule out injury, early arthritis, or other serious conditions, the good news is that knee pain from overuse is usually solvable with ice, rest, and controlled exercises that promote healing, says Griffin.

While PAD isnt the only reason you might experience leg pain while walking, its important to consider. Having PAD increases your risk of other cardiovascular problems. The fatty buildup in arteries of the leg might also be accumulating in the arteries serving the heart and brain. This makes a person with PAD far more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke than someone without the condition.

If youre experiencing symptoms of PAD, a simple test called an ankle-brachial index, or ABI, can help your doctor make a diagnosis. Your doctor will use a special cuff to measure the blood pressure in your ankle, and then compare that against the blood pressure in your arm. These readings should match if your arteries are clear. Lower pressure in the ankle is a PAD tip-off.

Your doctor can perform this test at your annual physical. If your doctor suspects you have PAD, he or she might want to follow up with an angiogram, which uses MRI or x-rays to take images of your arteries to look for blockages, says Dr. Pradhan.

Can Someone With Pfp Syndrome Play Sports

Most people with PFP syndrome need to cut back or stop sports for some time. Follow the health care provider’s instructions on when it’s safe for you to go back to sports. This usually is when:

  • Hip, leg, and core strength is near normal.
  • Flexibility, especially in the hamstring muscle, has improved.
  • There’s no pain with everyday activities, such as walking and going up/down stairs.
  • Any pain with activity is very mild and goes away within a few minutes of starting the activity.

Get Help If You Need It

Make sure you have good walking shoes, Albayda says. After you walk, if you have soreness or swelling, lie down with your legs raised and put ice on your knees.

If walking hurts, talk to your doctor. You may have problems with knee alignment, so assistive devices might help, such as custom-made inserts for your shoes. Figure out what help you need so you can get moving.

“Trust your body and trust the fact that we are made to move, and motion itself has a healing effect,” Robertson says. “What may feel a little achy at first will have some great results — not only how your knees feel, but in how your whole body feels.”

What Should I Do About Heel Pain

Andy recommends applying ice to the area. He says the best way to do this is to freeze a small bottle of water, then place it on the floor and roll it back and forth under your foot for about 20 minutes. Never place ice directly on your skin.
