Sciatica A Few Weeks After A Total Knee Replacement

Inversion Table Tips: Is It Right For You and How To Use It

Sciatica that starts a few days or even a week or greater from surgery may not have been caused by the surgery itself. After a knee replacement, your gait mechanics and walking are going to be quite different because of the pain and swelling in your knee. Youll also be walking with a walker or in some instances crutches. The altered walking pattern can cause extra stress on the back and this may cause sciatica.

How To Manage Bruising After The Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Bruising around the knee after a total knee replacement may continue to last for one to two weeks after the surgery. Bruising shows up in the form of a purplish discoloration around the knee that indicates there is blood accumulated under the skin.

When you are still in the hospital, your medical team may prescribe a blood thinner to prevent the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis, which may further increase the bruising.

Some form of bruising is normal after a knee surgery and will reduce after some time, but it can also be accompanied by tenderness around the knee. You can reduce bruising and inflammation by keeping your leg elevated.

While you are still at the hospital, you will be made to wear compression stockings, and your doctor is likely to recommend that you continue wearing them for at least two weeks after discharge also. These stockings help reduce pain in the legs and also decrease the risk of developing a blood clot.

Keep the affected leg in an elevated position above the heart level for some time during the day for a couple of days will also help reduce the swelling and pain.

Applying patches and topical creams to the knee can also help bring down the pain and also make it possible to get a good nights sleep. Such topical creams should include active ingredients like menthol, capsaicin, or salicylates.

Even If It Is Helpful The Effects Of Inversion Therapy Wont Be Long

Inversion therapy is supposed to stretch the spine, increasing the space between the vertebrae and relieving pressure on the spinal nerves. You may temporarily feel better while you are upside-down, but once you are upright again, your spine will go back to the way it was before. No reputable studies have indicated long-term effectiveness of inversion therapy.

In pursuit of relief from back pain, many people try inversion tables. Theoretically, hanging upside down releases pressure from the nerve roots and creates space between vertebrae. It’s a form of spinal traction, or spinal stretching, that may provide short-term relief for back pain, according to Mayo Clinic. However, the clinic warns that it’s not safe for people with high blood pressure, heart disease or glaucoma. In addition, hanging upside down could hurt your knees.

People have a tendency to overdo it with inversion tables. They either stay inverted too long or invert the table too far. Most tables are adjustable, so you dont have to completely invert yourself. Going too far or staying on the table too long could cause you to pull a muscle, leaving you in more pain than you were in before. Additionally, while some people find that inversion tables help to relieve the symptoms caused by spinal conditions, some find that it can make their symptoms worse. For these reasons, if you do decide to give inversion therapy a try, you should start slow. You should also consult with your doctor beforehand to make sure that inversion therapy is safe for you.

Tips For Using An Inversion Table Safely

If youre young and dont have other health problems besides back pain, you can safely try inversion therapy at home. People who have herniated disks or arthritis in their hips and knees may be more susceptible to injury using an inversion table. Mullen recommends talking to your doctor before trying inversion at home and taking these steps to do it safely.

Do Inversion Tables Really Work

Most people get relief from back pain by using inversion tables. In your spine, the bone or vertebrae are separated and protected by pliable discs filled with fluid and nerves.

Over time, gravity, movement, and poor posture cause your spine to collapse and curve in ways it shouldnt. The resulting pressure on the discs and vertebrae causes pain for various reasons.

Fluid can build up in the disc, bone can meet bone, and nerves can be pinched. Inversion tables reverse gravity and allow the vertebrae and discs to separate slightly, which relieves pain and helps realign your spine.

Reduced Need For Surgery

One 2014 study suggests that the zero-gravity nature of inversion can reduce compression. The authors of the study also noted that inversion may potentially prevent disability from back problems. This could also reduce the need for spinal surgery.

A 2012 study from Disability and Rehabilitation found that people with lumbar disease reduced their need for surgery six weeks after using inversion therapy.

Despite these findings, its important to note that back problems are complex. Inversion therapy is not a guarantee against surgery, nor should it be an alternative treatment for back pain. Talk to your doctor before trying inversion therapy as a treatment or form of exercise.

The inversion exercises a person can do depends on the equipment available.

Reasons To Avoid Using A Table

Inversion Recommendation from an Orthopedic Surgeon

Tables are ideal for adults between 4’9″ and 6’6″.; Most patients with back pain find inversion therapy to be extremely beneficial, but if more soreness is experienced after table use, then this form of therapy may not be suitable. The tables work by strapping the patient into anti-gravity boots and attaching at the ankles. This can be helpful for some, but too aggressive on the ankles and knees for others.

Inversion therapy may be too aggressive on the circulatory and skeletal system for patients with heart of circulatory conditions, high blood pressure, or osteoporosis, or for who are pregnant. Speaking with a doctor, therapist, or back pain expert can provide more insight into whether inversion therapy is a suitable solution.

Many inversion table retailers and manufacturers will allow customers to try out a table for a certain amount of time risk-free to determine if they like it before purchasing. Begin slowly easing the body into the therapy. Beginning with a small degree of inversion at about five minutes at a time is usually best, gradually leading up to a maximum of 25 minutes at a time.

What’s An Inversion Table

An inversion table is a device that allows the user to suspend his body upside down or at an acute angle. Doing so shifts gravitational forces so pressure on the body is reversed from its habitual position. There are many purported benefits of inversion, including relief from lower back pain, sciatica, poor circulation and scoliosis. However, these are largely anecdotal, and there is little research to support any of these effects.

Dr. Celeste Robb-Nicholson of Harvard Women’s Health Watch reports that, at best, inverting may stretch the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine, which could relieve muscle spasms. This is the reason why some people report relief after using an inversion table, although the relief is short-lived.

Combining Inversion Therapy With Alternative Treatments

How To Use Inversion Table Therapy

Chiropractic care, massage therapy, physical therapy, and other forms of alternative treatment methods have proven to be extremely effective for patients with back, neck, and body pain. Patients often combine these forms of treatment with traditional medicines and medical techniques to ensure fast, effective pain relief.

Chiropractic care involves spinal decompression, completed by a skilled chiropractor who can pop the back into a comfortable position. On the other hand, inversion therapy helps the back naturally find its own comfortable position and promotes self-healing. It uses the downward force of gravity to increase the space between the vertebrae and promote the natural s-curve shape of the body.

An inversion table can help take any of these traditional or alternative treatments to the next level. Patients can also benefit from using a table on its own, as it is ideal for treating everything from daily discomfort due to sitting in an office chair to ongoing chronic pain.

Dangers Of Inversion Tables

Are there dangers of inversion tables malfunctioning? – I don’t want to land on my head! This might be your legitimate first concern. If you buy a cheap, department-store model that might happen. But with a quality-made inversion table there is virtually no risk. The probability of a quality inversion table made with a frame of high-carbon steel breaking is probably less than the chance of a wheel suddenly falling off while you are driving your car.

Are there dangers of inversion tables causing health problems? Some users get concerned because their face gets red when inverted but this is actually good as it indicates increased blood flow to the brain, eyes, skin and hair. As you use it, you will get used to the feeling and, if too uncomfortable, simply invert at less of an angle or for a shorter time – your body will adjust. When starting inverting it is completely normal to feel a little pressure in your head until your body adjusts to the reverse in gravity. Remember, your body is doing something it’s not used to doing – just like how it has to adjust to a new exercise program.

If you have high blood pressure, heart disease or an eye condition you should check with your doctor before inverting. Inversion can cause a state of relaxation that results in a drop in heart rate and BP . Some doctors have used inversion as a treatment for high BP.
