At times the relief from a cortisone injection begins almost immediately after the procedure, but it can take a week for relief. A cortisone injection administered for certain conditions may be curative , but with some conditions the symptoms of the condition recur after weeks or months. In this situation, another cortisone injection can be given, but risks of side effects increase with more frequent or regular injections.

Symptoms Of A Swollen Knee

  • The skin around the kneecap is puffy
  • The knee is stiff and its difficult to bend or straighten it
  • Its painful and bearing weight is difficult or impossible
  • Redness or warmth

Swelling that does not go away, also known as chronic swelling, can lead to joint damage, cartilage degradation, or bone softening.

Being Active And Managing Stress

If youre not tired at the end of the day, it can be harder to get to sleep. If possible, make sure your routine includes:

  • Regular exercise.Water-based exercises are good options as they take the weight off your knees. Tai chi and yoga can help with strength and flexibility. Exercise can also help reduce stress.
  • Social activities. If youre no longer working, attending a day center, joining a club, or spending time with friends, family, or neighbors can help you get out and about.

If youre concerned that your stress and anxiety levels are too high or never seem to go away, speak to your doctor. They may be able to help with counseling or medication.

A suitable environment and regular sleeping habits can help improve sleep quality.

Tips include:

  • making sure the temperature is not too hot and not too cold
  • changing to a more suitable mattress, if necessary
  • using blackout blinds to keep out the light
  • leaving phones and other devices outside the room
  • shutting the door if other people are still up and about
  • using earplugs to cut out any noise
  • if possible, using the bedroom only for sleeping, not for working or watching television
  • having a regular time to wake up and go to bed
  • avoiding eating a large meal near bedtime
  • avoiding drinking too much fluid close to bedtime or you may wake up needing the bathroom

If you feel anxious about falling when you get up in the night to go to the bathroom, add nightlights in key locations to help you see your way.

What Conditions Are Cortisone Injections Used For

Cortisone injections can be used to treat the inflammation of small areas of the body , or they can be used to treat inflammation that is widespread throughout the body . Examples of conditions for which local cortisone injections are used include inflammation of a bursa , a tendon , and a joint . Knee osteoarthritis, hip bursitis, painful foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinitis, frozen shoulder, and many other conditions may be treated with cortisone injections. Certain skin disorders, such as alopecia , can be treated with cortisone injections.

Corticosteroid injections given in the shoulder may cure localized soft-tissue inflammation in the shoulder, such as bursitis or tendinitis. Cortisone injections of the shoulder may be used in conjunction with physical therapy to treat rotator cuff syndrome and impingement syndrome.

Injections of cortisone and an anesthetic such as lidocaine are sometimes used to confirm a diagnosis. For example, if pain in the buttock and groin improves after a cortisone injection in the hip, the pain is caused by hip arthritis rather than arthritis in the low back.

Epidural injections in the lumbar spine are cortisone injections inserted into a specific location in the spinal canal of the low back by a specialist under X-ray guidance . These injections may help relieve back pain and sciatica. Epidural injections can also be given in other areas of the spinal canal to relieve upper back and neck pain.

As I mentioned in the previous section, your knee joint is a hinge, meaning that it opens in one direction only. However, it is also classified as a slave joint, because it operates down the kinetic chain from your hip, which, as a ball-and-socket joint, has much great range of motion.

Simply put, your hip dictates much of the movement your knee faces. Strong hips allow your knee to perform its intended function only , while weak hips can cause your knee to suffer from lateral movement that its not built to sustain.

Hip strength comes from your Gluteal muscle groups, primarily your Gluteus Maximus and Gluteus Medius. A Pointing Dog exercise is a great way to activate your glute max, as well as to improve your knee extension for better ROM:

  • Rest your knee and do not exercise. Do not walk on your injured leg if you are told to keep weight off your knee. Rest helps decrease swelling and allows the injury to heal. You can do gentle range of motion exercises as directed to prevent stiffness.
  • Apply ice on your knee for 15 to 20 minutes every hour or as directed. Use an ice pack, or put crushed ice in a plastic bag. Cover the bag with a towel before you apply it. Ice helps prevent tissue damage and decreases swelling and pain.
  • Apply compression to your knee as directed. You may need to wear an elastic bandage. This helps keep your injured knee from moving too much while it heals. It should be tight enough to give support but so tight that it causes your toes to feel numb or tingly. Take the bandage off and rewrap it at least 1 time each day.
  • Elevate your knee above the level of your heart as often as you can. This will help decrease swelling and pain. Prop your leg on pillows or blankets to keep it elevated comfortably. Do not put pillows directly behind your knee.

    Sit on the floor with one leg bent at 90 degrees and your foot flat to the ground and your opposite leg fully extended forward. The leg at 90 degrees should be crossed over your extended leg right next to your knee.

Avid runners will be prone to knee pain if they wear incorrect running shoes, such as a shoe designed for a low arch worn by someone with a high arch, or if they fail to replace their running shoes in the correct time interval, typically at 200 to 300 miles depending on body type and shoe type, Bayes says.
    • Stretch properly. Tight muscles are at risk for strain and can put extra force on the knees and other joints.
    • Get adequate rest. Take at least one to two days off from running per week to avoid overuse.
    • Stay well-hydrated. Dehydration by even 5 percent has been shown to increase injury risk, Schulz says.
