Posterior Cruciate Ligament Substituting
This design replaces ligament with plastic components. It is recommended primarily for patients with severely damaged knees or weak ligaments. Also used in revision surgery.
It is indicated for patients with severe knee deformities or who have had previous knee replacement surgery or have had a knee cap removed.
The PLC substituting design has a tall post attached to the tibia which fits into a deep box attached to the femur. The two are not connected with any kind of hinge joint. A polyethylene bearing attaches to the tibial component.
A 2016 study of the PLC substituting design found that 88.5 percent of PLC substituting implants used in initial knee replacement surgery survived 10 years. For revision surgery, the 10 year survival rate was 75.8 percent if the revision surgery was due to some cause other than infection, and 54.6 percent if revision was due to infection.
Types Of Knee Implants
There are multiple types of knee implants that doctors and patients can discuss before choosing the best option.
Regardless of type, all knee implants have certain things in common.
All consist of a component that attaches to the thigh bone and one that attaches to the tibia, one of the two lower leg bones. A knee replacement implant may or may not have a patellar component mimicking the kneecap.
Some components, particularly the bearings, may be made of ceramics or a mixture of ceramics and metal. The materials have to be biocompatible meaning they cannot trigger the bodys rejection response. Knee implants are relatively lightweight usually between 15 and 20 ounces.
Factors To Consider When Choosing The Best Knee Sleeves
Comfort and Stability
This is the first thing that you should care about when considering the knee compression sleeves. Your recovery will be dependent on the comfort and stability of your knee brace. If it is not comfortable, you are not going to wear it for long periods. Similarly, if the knee brace does not offer stable compression, then there is no difference between wearing one and not wearing one.
Durability and Quality
Durablity is directly connected with the quality of the knee brace. Top quality knee braces are durable, which mean they are made from special fabric that has been strengthened to provide compression without coming apart. Many premium models come with reinforced stitching that further increase the life of the braces.
Cost and Value
A knee brace listed in our article can be expensive or cheap for you, depending upon your budget. What we have done while researching is to ensure that we list the best knee brace for dancing, while ensuring that there is a product for every budget range.

Personalized Cutting Guides And Surgical Plans
With the aid of MRIs, surgeons and device companies have begun to produce personalized cutting guides that are ordered prior to surgery. This is useful in difficult cases. The system uses an MRI or CT scan as well as 3D imaging software to view a computer simulation of the knee and create a unique surgical plan. Nearly all manufacturers, including Stryker and Biomet, now provide custom cutting guides. Cutting guides are designed to work with various sizes of implants custom made or personalized guides are not always necessary. How We Chose Our Selection Of Knee Pads
As we always do when making our selection, we chose the best knee pads based on 3 essential pieces of criteria besides rigorous testing to ensure we picked the brightest and most effective options around.
Brand – We always search for the best brands available as these are the ones that deliver consistent quality with every product. In our selection, we looked for a range of great brands that all offer something a little different to one another so there are no two knee pads which feel exactly the same.
Price – Different demands and purposes leads to different price ranges. We know not everybody wants the most high-tec protective knee pads around, but at the same time, some may want an option thats more suitable and reliable than your standard low-range pair of knee pads. We wanted to find a range of affordability that allowed everyone with whatever needs to find the knee pads they require.
Quality – Quality is always an important factor and for keeping your body protected, we believe it is even more important. Using reviews and studying the construction and materials used in these knee pads, we could figure out the level of quality. If some knee pads seemed like they were mostly useless, they didnt make the cut. The ones you see above boast the quality we demand of every selection.
Your Knee Replacement Surgery Classification
There are two types of knee replacement surgery classifications: Inpatient surgeries and outpatient surgeries.
Oftentimes, inpatient means youll have a hospital stay after surgery, and outpatient means youll be discharged the same day as your surgery. But that may not be how your insurance company classifies your surgery.
In fact, its very possible that a knee replacement surgery would be classified as an outpatient surgery. Many patients do go home the same day as their surgery if they meet certain criteria and their insurance covers it. But even if a patient spends a night in the hospital, its likely that their surgery will be considered outpatient. This can have an impact on the total amount youre responsible for.

Wraparound Knee Brace With Hinges
Some wraparound braces sport hinges along the sides of the brace. This is a sturdier type of brace for those who may suffer from unstable ligaments. The hinges allow the knee to move in a natural manner while still supporting it. This type of brace also provides compression when the knee swells.
If youre looking for an excellent hinged knee brace and dont know where to start, we suggest you check out the offerings of McDavid. This manufacturer is known for its supportive hinged knee braces.
Innovative Robotic Technology Allows Surgeons To Personalize Procedures
Parkwest Medical Center is one of the first hospitals in the region to offer robotic-assisted total and partial knee replacements. This latest advancement in joint replacement surgery transforms the way knee replacements are performed.
The Mako system is a revolutionary tool to help joint surgeons be more precise in placing implants to achieve the most appropriate, balanced position possible, explained orthopedic surgeon Harold Cates, MD. This technology should improve patient outcomes in terms of faster recovery, reduced medical risks and reduced need for future revisions.
The robotic knee replacement treatment option is designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis. Through CT-based 3D modeling of bone anatomy, surgeons can use the system to create a personalized surgical plan and identify the implant size, orientation and alignment based on each patients unique anatomy. The system also enables surgeons to virtually modify the surgical plan intra-operatively and assists the surgeon in executing bone resections.
The first advantage of this new procedure is that minimizing soft tissue disruption may benefit the early rehabilitation following knee replacement, said orthopedic surgeon Brian Covino, MD. The long-term advantage is that a well-balanced knee replacement has the potential to increase the survivorship of the implants and provide a knee that feels more natural to the patient.
