Case Presentations: Stem Cell Therapy And Prolotherapy Combined

Cartilage can Regenerate

Case 5: A 56-year-old man with bilateral knee pain. The patient is a former competitive weightlifter who continues to do strength training exercises. He complained of instability in both knees during exercise, as well as sleep interruption.

  • The patient received 29 bilateral dextrose prolotherapy treatments over five years. At the final prolotherapy visit, sleep interruption was still present, pain intensity was 4/10, and pain frequency was 100%. Four months later, the patient was treated with platelet-rich plasma. Three months after plasma treatment, the patient began a series of three bone marrow stem cell injection treatments at 23 month intervals. A
  • At the time of the second bone marrow stem cell treatment, stability was improved.
  • At the time of the third treatment, pain intensity was 2/10, and pain frequency was 30%. Sleep was no longer affected. These gains were maintained for nine months.

Case 6: A 69-year-old female came into our office with pain in both knees.

She had been previously diagnosed with osteoarthritis, had arthroscopic surgery to both knees eight years earlier, and medial meniscus repair in both knees 15 years earlier.

The patient reported pain occurred climbing or descending stairs and with standing or walking for two hours. Pain interrupted sleep and limited participation in racquet sports and golf.

The patient received six treatments in both knees with dextrose prolotherapy over a ten-month period.

Pemf Will Stimulate The Osteoblasts And The Extracellular Matrix In Rebuilding Bone Structure And Cartilage

PEMF invigorates the different cells involved in the rebuilding of cartilage. The whole process is like a building site, where the construction workers are motivated and ready to go. However, they need the building materials for construction to begin. Good nutrition, minerals, and supplementation are required to provide the building blocks for the cells to work in reconstruction. Due to soil depletion, healthy diets may not contain the necessary nutrients in the adequate amounts to make a difference. Consult your health care professional to find viable sources of supplements such as collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamin K2, and minerals like calcium, magnesium, boron and silica. We have consulted with several experts in the field and are happy to make this information available to you.

PEMF will provide an important foundation for healthy aging and repair of wearing body structures, enabling the participation in an active lifestyle.

The Need for Frequency and Power

In order for a PEMF device to be successful in the regrowth of cartilage or bone mass, it requires the right frequencies and sufficient power. View this video to see why:

Initial Treatment And Self Care

If youve injured your joint and your symptoms are not too severe for example, youre still able to put weight on and move the joint you can often look after yourself using PRICE therapy.

PRICE stands for:

  • Protection protect the affected area from further injury by using a support, such as a knee brace
  • Rest rest the affected joint as much as possible during the first 2 or 3 days , then try gradually returning to light activity over the next few days and weeks
  • Ice apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel to the injured area for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours during the first 2 or 3 days
  • Compression compress or bandage the injured area to limit any swelling and movement that could damage it further you can use a simple elastic bandage or an elasticated tubular bandage available from a pharmacy
  • Elevation keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow whenever you can to help reduce swelling

If your joint is painful, take ordinary painkillers such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.

Visit your GP if your symptoms have not started to improve after a few days of PRICE therapy.

What Can I Expect From The Procedure

Before the operation, you will have the opportunity to discuss all aspects of your procedure with your doctor. An anaesthetist will be present to discuss the best method of anaesthesia for your case before you enter the operating room.

Microdrilling surgery involves the drilling of small holes into the bone at the location of the cartilage damage. It is designed to stimulate the marrow and create the ideal environment for cartilage healing, through the mobilisation of marrow-derived stem cells. The operation is expected to take between one and two hours.

Osteoarticular Transfer System Procedure

The OATS procedure, also called mosaicplasty, involves taking healthy cartilage from non-weight-bearing areas of the joint and transplanting it into the damaged areas. Because the transfer happens within the same joint, this procedure works best for small areas of damaged cartilage. Joints significantly affected by osteoarthritis may require a different approach. Since your own tissue is used, the OATS procedure eliminates risks related to allergy or transplant rejection.

How To Quickly Regenerate Damaged Cartilage

14 March, 2019

One of the most common injuries for people is damaged cartilage. It tends to be very painful but recentstudies have conducted that your diet helps you regenerate cartilage even faster.

Cartilage is a very flexible structure that weightlessly supports certain structures like the pinna , nose, and joints. There are areas in our body that are much more sensitive to getting injured, such as the knee joints, and are always more affected in those who do daily physical activities like athletes.

It can also affect elderly people because of the natural deterioration of the body at a certain age.

A Natural Remedy To Regenerate Hip And Knee Cartilage

Some people suffer from osteoarthritis or arthritis. This problem occurs when the cartilage wears out. The cartilages act as buffers between the bones and allow them to articulate smoothly against each other.

When this wear is generated, the bones no longer have how to separate and begin to rub against each other. Because of this, people may experience symptoms such as pain, inflammation and the inability to move.

After a while, the joints begin to deform and change their appearance. Moreover, there are some cases when spurs develop around them. The pieces of bone that can be detached are usually embedded in that free space that leaves the worn joint causing more pain.

People who suffer from this chronic disease are limited by the lack of progressive movement that occurs in legs, arms, and hands. In most cases, this disease affects older people, mostly women.

New Procedure Helps Patients Regrow Cartilage In Their Knee

Could we regenerate cartilage to reimagine medicine?

Locking. Swelling. Pain. Clicking. When you feel any of these in your knee, its a sign the cartilage in your knee may be eroding. If treatments like rest, medication or physical therapy dont work, you may benefit from a newer surgical procedure that helps people regrow their knee cartilage.

Orthopedic surgeon Peter Wang Jr., MD, with Upper Bucks Orthopaedics at Grand View Health is skilled in a technique called MACI. It transplants your bodys own cartilage-forming cells into your knee to help regrow damaged cartilage, relieve pain and increase range of motion.

MACI stands for matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation. Its a modern enhancement to ACI surgery, which orthopaedic surgeons have performed for more than 20 years.

Clinical trials show MACI offers less pain and better range of motion for patients compared to microfracture surgery, which requires drilling into the bone Wang said.

How MACI at Grand View Health Works

The MACI procedure works in three stages. First, patients undergo a biopsy that extracts cartilage-forming cells, called chondrocytes, from the body. Next, medical team members send your cells to a lab, where theyre embedded onto a collagen membrane and multiply.

Then at Grand View Health, on the day of surgery, a surgeon implants the collagen membrane into your knee. As you recover from surgery, the cartilage cells regenerate, forming new tissue to replace worn-out cartilage.

Bottom Line: Meniscus Tissue Is Hard To Grow

In general current research shows it is hard to grow a new meniscus. The important question to ask is why does my knee really hurt, and what can be done to help? This is not the same answer for everyone. The absent meniscus itself does not cause pain. The concern is what happens to the cartilage protected by the meniscus, and is there something that can be done to protect it, or help it heal? New research is also addressing this concern, and newer treatment methods, including FDA trials, mqy help answer this question.

To this specific patient, while these ideas here are informative, I would not really be able to give a personalized answer without seeing your knee, your xrays, perhaps an MRI, and the most recent scope pictures taken during the last surgery. It all goes together to come up with the right treatment plan. As always, I love trying to help people solve these problems and look forward to seeing you in my office soon to discuss it all in detail.

IF you have a meniscus tear, had meniscus surgery, have a cartilage injury, are wondering about meniscus regeneration, and are worried about your knee and its future, please dont hesitate to contact me and set up a consultation.

Foods To Increase Lubrication In The Knees

To help increase lubrication in the knees through nutrition, there are several foods to consider adding as a part of your healthy and well-balanced diet.

Some of these foods include salmon, trout, olive oil, nuts, avocados are all high in omega-3s. When you combine these foods with glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin, they can all work together to help increase lubrication while also decreasing inflammation. All of this will work wonders when it comes to pain relief as well.

Diseases That Affect The Cartilage

Osteoarthritis results in the cartilage which covers the bone, , slowly thins and wears away. This results in a bone upon bone situation which can be extremely painful and reduces the ability to move. Osteoarthritis can often be the result of high stress to a joint due to a specific activity. Traditionally, osteoarthritis eventually is treated by surgery and the introduction of implants . Replacement joints are never as strong as natural ones.

A detached or ruptured knee can result when the knee is either detached, or the disc in between the two bones is ruptured causing a leakage of the lubricating synovial fluid and resulting in a bone on bone situation, which is extremely painful and adversely affects the ability to move.

Bursitis occurs when the pouches or sacs of synovial fluid, surrounding the knee, elbow or shoulder joint become inflamed. This is sometimes referred to as housemaids knee, and tennis elbow.

Torn cartilage occurs when the meniscus, , can also be damaged. The meniscus on the outside of the knee is the lateral meniscus, the meniscus on the inside of the knee is medial meniscus.

Costochondritis is the inflammation of cartilage in the ribs which can cause chest pain .

Regrow cartilage in joints? Science says you can

Within the last decades, exciting advances in cellular research have allowed medicine to acquire a new area of focus- regenerative medicine. Regenerative approaches to medicine focus on encouraging the body to repair damaged or diseased tissue. In some areas, the body can be persuaded to recreate and integrate new tissue in the place of old tissue.

The regenerative medicine approach to the repair of tissues and organs damaged by injury, disease and aging is rapidly emerging as a disruptive technology that promises to transform healthcare worldwide. Through the overlap of cell and molecular biology, biomaterial and bioengineering disciplines, the vision of restoring and extending a patients normal, active lifestyle without the use of plastic, metal or foreign tissue parts is no longer science fiction. The use of cells, biomaterials and bioactive mediators, either alone or in combination, can stimulate and guide natural repair mechanisms to produce fully functional, native tissues. This bench to bedside translation of basic academic science principles provides new alternatives to the treatment of a diverse range of unmet clinical needs that encompass musculoskeletal-related conditions, soft tissue wounds, cardio- and peripheral vascular diseases, neurological disorders and stroke.

Studies On Damaged Cartilage Regeneration

A study done by the University of Maryland Medical Center concluded that lysine deficiency can delay the growth of damaged cartilage. It can also affect the regeneration of skin cells, which damages the total reconstruction of the area involved with the physical damage.

12 mg of lysine for every kilo of body weight is what you should consume in order to help the body be able to rebuild cartilage faster. The foods that contain high levels of lysine are:

  • Legumes

Foods That Help Your Joints

Eating foods good for joints and cartilage may help relieve the symptoms of arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, including osteoarthritis and gout. In some cases, you might even be able to prevent or delay their progression.

Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D., of Tufts University, states that eating to protect your joints can potentially reduce painful inflammation and annoying stiffness. By adding exercise to a healthy diet, youll likely lose weight, which also helps ease the stress on your hip and knee joints. Even a small reduction in body weight is a step in the right direction.

Per Dr. Nelson, you should consume one or more servings of fish, nuts, soy and legumes each day. Limit meat, eggs and poultry to two servings daily. Add three servings of vegetables, three servings of fruits and four to nine servings of starches, with at least half from whole grain sources.

Between two and three servings of reduced-fat milk, cheese and yogurt cover the dairy category. Omega-3 oils are very desirable, but you should limit all other oils and fats. Its also advisable to limit your consumption of sugary foods.

Dr. Nelsons recommendations are based on smaller size servings rather than heaping portions that often fill diners plates. Also, making these healthy foods a priority means your plate wont have much room for calorie-packed processed foods that dont provide much nutrition. These principles also provide a good foundation for an osteoarthritis diet.

Regrown Cartilage In The Knee

Patients have experienced regrowth of cartilage in knee joints changing the bone-on-bone situation, recreating the cartilage between the bones increasing the glide and removing the pain. The X-ray below shows the knee of a 70-year-old female who was experiencing extreme pain when walking because the cartilage had degenerated. The Curatron encouraged cartilage growth between the bones removing the need for a knee replacement.

What Are The Most Common Symptoms Of Cartilage Damage In The Knee

Cartilage Regeneration

Cartilage damage can affect your knee in different ways.

Torn cartilage can get caught between the structures of your knee, resulting in pain, swelling and sometimes a locking or catching sensation.

You may also experience a feeling of instability and weakness.

Knee pain can cause you to alter your gait, which can, in turn, lead to misalignment and pain in your knees, ankles or hips.

Can You Regenerate Joint Cartilage

What comes to your mind when you hear the word cartilage? For most people, cartilage is just the smooth coating that reduces joint friction by covering the end of bones.

However, thats not the only reason you have cartilage in your body.

For starters, cartilage is one of the reasons why your bones grow when hyaline cartilage changes to bone in a process called endochondral ossification.

Classic examples of bones that develop straight from cartilage are your ribs, which are initially soft when you are young and become strong as you age because they transform from cartilage to bone.

Besides acting to reduce friction and form bones, cartilage also acts as shock absorbers to protect bones and joints during daily use.

Unfortunately, cartilage is one of those parts of the body thats prone to complications, and these complications can manifest with dire consequences, especially when they cause cartilage levels to decrease.
