I love the comprehensive approach that Dr. Guan takes to treating muscle and joint issues. Ive never met someone who has her unique background with training and degrees in both acupuncture and physical therapy. Because of this, she is able to integrate acupuncture, as well as light and heat therapy, with more traditional physical therapy treatment approaches. Based on my experience during the past six weeks, this comprehensive treatment approach is truly effective and has helped me regain mobility in my knees and hips. As an added benefit, Dr. Guan has a great personality, which makes the whole experience fun as well.

What Makes Chinese Medicine Treatment For Knee Osteoarthritis Different From Some Other Approaches

At this clinic, we apply the Chinese medicine approach, which looks at the whole person and their individual circumstances. Chinese medicine is a body-mind approach, seeing a persons physical reality as inseparable from their mental, emotional, social and spiritual life.

We can help you by explaining how Chinese medicine sees all of your symptoms as an integrated whole, not just looking at isolated symptoms such as pain. The Chinese medicine framework is about understanding how factors in your life are interconnected, so that you can set goals for your recovery and work towards regaining wellbeing in an integrated way.

Alongside acupuncture treatment, we generally recommend tailored lifestyle modifications such as stress reduction, planning pleasurable activities, adjustments to exercise routines, dietary therapy or self-care at home such as heat or bath therapy.

Incidence Of Adverse Events

All adverse events occurring during the trialsuch as fainting, sweating or dizziness skin burns during acupuncture and moxibustion treatment or bleeding, local haematoma and other abnormal feelings after acupuncture treatmentwill be recorded on the CRF. The researcher will record all details, such as the date, time and degree of occurrence related to the treatment at each visit, and will provide proper medical advice and care. Severe adverse events will be reported to the principal investigator and the ethics board immediately, and proper measures will be taken in a timely manner.

What Causes Knee Pain

Can physio help with osteoarthritis of the knee?

There are many, many causes of knee pain, some due to chronic overuse, some to acute injuries and some just due to the ageing process:

  • surrounding muscle tightness/strains
  • acute injuries such as torn ligaments or cartilage
  • osteoarthritis and joint deterioration

The wear and tear of many years of walking, running, jumping, dancing etc. can put immense strain on our knees and lucky is the person who doesnt have some knee pain at some point in their life.

However, that is not to say that leading a sedentary lifestyle will result in no knee problems, in all likelihood the opposite!! Exercise will strengthen the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support the knee joint. In fact recent studies have shown that runners are LESS likely to develop osteoarthritis of the knee than sedentary people.

Acupuncture Repairs Knee Arthritis Cartilage Damage

19 March 2018

Acupuncture stimulates cartilage repair for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Using MRIs, researchers have quantified the therapeutic effects of acupuncture. Within four weeks, acupuncture successfully improves the condition of cartilage in the anterior medial and lateral tibial regions of the knee. In addition, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores document that acupuncture reduces pain and stiffness levels while simultaneously improving physical function.

The needles used in the study were Hanyi brand disposable stainless steel filiform needles, size 0.30 × 40 mm. The depth of insertion ranged from 0.83.5 cm. Manual needle stimulation was applied to elicit a deqi response for each needle. Additionally, medial and lateral Xiyan received 20 Hz electroacupuncture stimulation to patient tolerance levels. The acupoints used in the study were the following:

  • MN-LE16 Neixiyan
  • ST34 Liangqiu
  • ST36 Zusanli

The researchers note that acupuncture and physical therapy produced positive patient outcomes, especially for pain, stiffness in the morning, and joint dysfunction. The researchers note, acupuncture treatment showed better curative effect than physiotherapy, suggesting that acupuncture may be a superior non-operative treatment for KOA compared with physiotherapy. Can Acupuncture Help The Swelling

Traditional Chinese medicine theory views that the bones are in fact controlled by the kidneys. This is not a silly concept considering that in modern medicine the kidneys have an important role in calcium metabolism. In cases of osteoarthritis affecting the knees where there is swelling, diuretic pharmaceuticals are prescribed by modern doctors. In contrast, Chinese medicine physicians can either needle acupuncture points that are on the kidney and bladder meridians or in other instances prescribe Chinese herbs that have a diuretic function to urinate out the toxins causing the osteoarthritis.

It is not uncommon that after an acupuncture treatment for osteoarthritis, patients feel an urgency to urinate because the kidney metabolism has been stimulated by the needles.

Western Medicine Or Acupuncture For Osteoarthritis

Acupuncture for Knee Pain & Knee Arthritis with Jana & Dr. Bill

Western medicine has little to offer apart from pain killers, anti-inflammatories and if severe, joint replacements can be done. Dr John McDonald, one of Australias foremost acupuncture researchers said Acupuncture down-regulates interleukin 6 which is one of the central mediators in bony degeneration and inflammation in osteoarthritis. This means acupuncture is much better than anti-inflammatory drugs as it slows the bone loss

Acupuncture And Knee Pain

Acupuncture, when used for knee pain, can yield excellent results! The acupuncture treatment works by getting the body to a state where it can begin to heal itself naturally and without the use of medication or surgery by releasing feel-good chemicals that act as natural pain relief. Acupuncture can also loosen and relax painful trigger points that commonly occur in fascia and muscles. In areas that acupuncture needles are applied, the body will increase blood flow to improve circulation and flush out any toxins and built-up fluids that can contribute to pain and swelling.

Treating Hip Pain With Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used to treat everything from stress to nausea, and also joint pain. But can it really help tough-to-treat hip pain?

If nothing youâve tried to relieve hip pain has worked, and youâre not ready to undergo hip surgery, there might be one more treatment option for you to investigate: acupuncture.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy that has been used to cure ailments and illnesses for thousands of years. Thin, tiny needles are placed into particular points in the skin, then can be adjusted with the hands or stimulated with gentle electrical currents.

Acupuncture has been used to treat:

  • Chronic pain
  • Stress
  • Pregnancy pain

A series of acupuncture visits is usually needed to receive real relief. Sometimes, insurance companies may cover the cost of acupuncture therapy, but every plan is different, so itâs important to check before making an appointment.

As with any treatment, acupuncture has its benefits and drawbacks.

Acupuncture Pros

  • Many people with pain find relief from acupuncture when they couldnât find relief from other sources.
  • When a qualified practitioner is performing acupuncture with sterile, nontoxic needles, the risks are very rare.
  • The effects of treatment is limited .

Can Acupuncture Help With Healing Of Meniscus

Treatment choice for this type of meniscal tear is not always easy. These are difficult tears because they can go deep into the joint capsule. Removing part or the entire meniscus can result in ongoing painful symptoms. A partial meniscectomy eventually leads to a second surgery to remove the entire meniscus . Studies also show that partial or total meniscectomy can lead to early arthritis.

Can acupuncture help?

The study provides evidence that horizontal meniscal tears can be treated successfully with a nonoperative approach. The tear tends to remain stable and no further treatment is required. Previous routine management with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy may not be needed after all. Another study comparing electroacupuncture to ice massage and transcutaneous nerve stimulation for subjects with osteoarthritis found that acupuncture decreased pain and stiffness levels and increased muscle strength and flexion in the knee. Another study published that same year suggested that patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome might benefit from weekly acupuncture treatments.Have a knee pain? How Effective Is Acupuncture Treatment For Knee Osteoarthritis

Testimonial for osteoarthritis and hip pain relief with Acupuncture

Acupuncture appears to be an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis, leading to decreased pain intensity and improvements in physical function as well as enhanced quality of life .

Electroacupuncture involves using a tiny electrical current passing through the needles to stimulate the surrounding areas. Electroacupuncture may be more effective than both regular acupuncture and medications.

Exercises and weight loss are often recommended for people with osteoarthritis of the knee. For people with difficulty either exercising or losing weight, acupuncture may be a very useful option in the treatment plan.

The evidence is strong enough in favour of acupuncture to lead some researchers to suggest it may be an alternative for traditional pain relief medications in patients with osteoarthritis.

Acupuncture Research For Knee Pain

Acupuncture Modulates Cortical Thickness & Functional Connectivity in Knee Osteoarthritis Patients:

  • This study investigated the cortical thickness and functional connectivity across longitudinal acupuncture treatments in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
  • It involved 30 patients over a period of 4 weeks consisting of 6 treatments, and researchers collected fMRI scans before their first, third, and sixth treatments.
  • Results show that acupuncture may achieve its therapeutic effect of knee OA pain by preventing cortical thinning and decreases in functional connectivity in major pain related areas, therefore modulating pain in the descending pain modulatory pathway.

The Effects of Acupuncture on Chronic Knee Pain Due to Osteoarthritis:

  • This meta-analysis was performed with the goal of evaluating the temporal effects of acupuncture on chronic knee pain due to knee osteoarthritis.

Acupuncture And Knee Pain How To Find Relief

It is becoming more common for people to seek out alternative treatment for their aches and pains before they start a regiment of steroids or opioids to gain relief from pain because we now know that long-term use of oral anti-inflammatory medications can lead to gastrointestinal damage as well as liver and kidney toxicity. For those looking for long term relief from knee pain, acupuncture is a great option to explore. In one investigation, acupuncture plus herbal medicine outperformed acupuncture plus ibuprofen for pain relief. In another independent investigation, acupuncture outperformed diclofenac for relief of pain, inflammation, and motor impairment due to knee osteoarthritis. Common types of knee pain treated with acupuncture include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, runners knee, and water on the knee.
