Most knee problems occur because of overuse. Your knees carry most of your weight and this joint can be damaged when overused from intense physical activity. A feeling of tightness and pain may occur whenever you kneel, sit or climb stairs. Here are some of the common causes of knee problems that cause pain and tightness.

The stabilizing structures of the knee are the medial collateral ligament, which is on the inside of the knee. Ill show you here on the model as well. This is a small model but this is the medial collateral ligament in the inside of the knee. This is the lateral collateral ligament on the outside of the knee. These two ligaments stabilize the knee from what we call valgus stress and varus stress.

Real Worry: Loud Pop At Time Of Injury Followed By Swelling Instability And Giving Way
When a patient says to me, Doc, I heard a pop and my knee swelled, it is definitely a cause for concern. If there is a pop at the time of injury, the knee has almost certainly been damaged. You have most likely injured either your ligaments anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligamentor medial collateral ligament or the meniscusor articular cartilage. The knee will usually swell up after these kinds of injuries.
If there is pain, swelling, or giving way of the knee, we will do a careful exam, history, X-ray, and MRI. By studying the cartilage and soft tissue within the knee, we can determine which tissues need to be repaired. Sometimes careful physical therapy, combined with injections, can fix the problem and help you avoid surgery.
So remember: If you hear clicks and pops in your knee but feel no pain or swelling, dont worry. It is normal. If you have pain, instability, or swelling, make sure you check it out to avoid further damage to the joint. The philosophy on this has changed from rest your knee and wait until you are older for a joint replacement to fix the problem ASAP by repairing, regenerating, or replacing the missing tissue and cartilage so that you may never develop arthritis or need a knee replacement.
While it is always best to hear the sounds of silence, snap, crackle, and pop sometimes need to be listened to as well.

- Regular exercise can strengthen your legs and knees. Exercise with weights or resistance bands — or do bodyweight moves, like squats and lunges — at least twice a week. Walk up stairs or hills, or ride a stationary bicycle to build muscle to support your knees.
- Warm up before you exercise. An intense workout with cold muscles and joints can cause injury.
- Keep flexible. Before exercise, try dynamic stretches, in which you move a muscle through a full range of motion. After exercise, do static stretches, where you hold a stretch for 30 seconds. This helps prevent injury. Regularly stretch the muscles in the front and back of your thigh .
- If youâre already exercising, slowly work up to harder, longer workouts.
- Wear shoes that fit right and are in good condition.
- Stay at a healthy weight. Youâll reduce stress on your knees. Being overweight is a major risk factor in developing early arthritis of the knee.

How To Stop The Cracking Sound From Knee
There are a few exercises which can be done to get rid of Knee Cracking. These exercises are:
Calf Release Exercise to Get Rid of Cracking Knee: This exercise helps to relieve muscle tension with direct pressure. Simple stretching just stretches or elongates the muscle but muscle release technique actually activates the tight muscles and makes them more balanced resulting in getting rid of Knee Cracking.
To do this exercise, sit with the affected calf on top of a tennis ball. Pull the other leg on top of it and roll yourself up and down over the ball. Once you identify a tender spot then stop rolling and move the foot up and down for about half a minute. This exercise need to be done at least three times a day to get rid of Knee Cracking.
Hip Flexor Release to Get Rid of Cracking Knee: Majority of knee conditions and noises that are heard from knee including Knee Cracking are due to some abnormality of the hip. In case of Knee Cracking, this can be addressed by a Hip Flexor Release Exercise.
To do this exercise, take two tennis balls and tape them together. Now, lie on the stomach and place the taped balls beneath the stomach. Now bend the leg such that it is perpendicular to your body and swing the leg sideways from left to right such that a strain is felt on the knee. Swing the leg as much as you can tolerate.
Repeat this for the other leg. Do this at least two to three times a day in reps of three to get rid of Knee Cracking.

Surgery For Knee Clicking
After surgery, the knees may become louder. This might be related to the operation itself or the properties of the new joint in the event of a joint replacement.

What Are The Possible Causes Of Clicking And Catching Of The Knee
Cavitation. Sometimes the noise you hear is due to tiny air bubbles inside the joint fluid, which build up with changes in the joint pressure. When the bubbles burst, this is called cavitation. Cavitation is typically something that is not worrisome as long as it is unaccompanied by other symptoms .
Ligaments and tendons. Another possible cause of clicking and catching of the knee is when the ligaments and tendons catch as they go over a bony lump and pop as they snap back into place. Like cavitation, this is also not considered to be a serious problem if unaccompanied by other symptoms.
Soft tissue. Clicking may also be caused by the catching on soft tissue or scar tissue within the knee. Most of the time, these noises are natural and do not necessarily mean that youll develop other issues .
Meniscus tear. If you feel some pain as the clicking/popping occurs, it could be a sign of a meniscus tear, which means there is a small piece of loose cartilage caught in the knee. Treatment for a torn meniscus commonly includes rest, pain relievers and physical therapy. Less commonly, surgery may be required.
Osteoarthritis. If youre experiencing painful and persistent clicking/popping, it could indicate osteoarthritis, in which the smooth cartilage has worn down and the bones cause friction when they rub against one another.

- A clicking sound is again a single sound that you hear when you flex your knee. Though it occurs due to a meniscus tear.
- Grinding or grating sound: It is used to describe a continuous scratching sound from the knee joint. This kind of sound is very common in those with patellofemoral pain syndrome and osteoarthritis of the knee.
