Your knee may hurt at first and you’ll probably need to take painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. See a GP if this does not control the pain.

During the first few days, you can help reduce any swelling by keeping your leg elevated when sitting and holding an ice pack to your knee for 10 to 15 minutes every few hours.

A physiotherapist will teach you some exercises to do at home to strengthen the muscles that stabilise your kneecap and improve the movement of your knee.

The splint should only be kept on for comfort and should be removed to do these exercises as soon as you’re able to move your leg.

It usually takes about 6 weeks to fully recover from a dislocated kneecap, although sometimes it can take a bit longer to return to sports or other strenuous activities.

Ask your GP, consultant or physiotherapist for advice about returning to your normal activities.

When Pain Doesnt Go Away

For joint pain that doesnt go away, both rheumatologists and pain medicine specialists offer treatments including:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications. Pain-relief drugs can be taken by mouth or applied to the skin.
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain-relievers. Certain pain medications, like Cymbalta and Lyrica, may be prescribed by your health care provider.
  • Injections. If the pain is disabling, injecting corticosteroid or viscosupplementation into the joint may help. Viscosupplementation is similar to a lubricating gel that can be injected into the knee joint to help decrease pain with movement.
  • Radiofrequency ablation . This relatively new treatment for knee pain uses a special needle with a heated tip. When placed near the knees sensory nerves, the intense heat alters the nerves to stop them from transmitting pain. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes, it is an outpatient procedure in the doctors office, and it requires almost no recovery time. Patients can have an improvement in pain for months or perhaps a year. Radiofrequency ablation is a way to delay knee replacement, says Dr. Bolash. It doesnt fix the problem, but it buys time for the patient to lose weight, perhaps so they can become eligible for knee replacement later.

What Is Anterior Knee Pain

Anterior knee pain is commonly known as patellofemoral pain. Patellofemoral pain is the term given to the pain or discomfort between the kneecap and thigh bone . As many as one in three adults experience these symptoms at some point in their life with symptoms varying from person to person.

It often affects adolescents at the time of increased growth and can affect more girls than boys. However, it can also affect older patient groups most commonly associated with osteoarthritis on the underside of the kneecap.

What are the symptoms of patellofemoral pain?

Patients experience pain at the front of the knee or round their kneecap. In some cases it is also known as anterior knee pain . Patients often experience an ache which can increase to a sharper pain with activity. In addition, they feel that their leg is about to give way but this does not usually happen.

People who experience patellofemoral pain are likely to notice that certain activities are painful, such as going up and down stairs or hills, squatting, running or jumping. They may feel a clicking or grinding sensation during these activities

What causes Patellofemoral pain?

There is usually a combination of factors that cause patellofemoral pain such as:

  • weakness in the buttock and thigh muscles
  • tightness at the back of your thigh
  • being overweight
  • poor footwear selection such as high heels or flat arched shoes
  • overuse and
  • occupations that require kneeling.

The first three factors are by far the most common.

Do All Meniscus Tears Hurt

Yes, at some point in time most all meniscus tears will hurt. But that doesnt mean they will hurt for a long time. In many cases the pain from a meniscus tear will either improve significantly or go away without surgery. In cases where there was an injury which preceded the meniscus tear, you may have knee pain and swelling with virtually all activities. These acute meniscus tears usually occur in younger active individuals. The tear may cause mechanical pain such as popping, locking or even cause your knee to catch or feel unstable. Most people with acute, traumatic meniscus tears should consider surgery to repair the tear.

Acute traumatic meniscus tears are far less common than degenerative tears. Most of you probably felt the tear occur by kneeling, or twisting to pick something up. That is because the tear occurred through a degenerative or worn out meniscus. With a degenerative tear, rushing in for an MRI and rushing to schedule surgery isnt usually necessary since your knee pain has a good chance of settling down within 4-6 weeks. In general, there are many types of meniscus tears, and the type of tear you have will determine the type of pain you will have, and how long you will have it.

Who Gets Pfp Syndrome

Patellofemoral pain syndrome usually happens in people who do sports that involve a lot of knee bending and straightening, such as running, biking, and skiing. It also can happen to people, particularly young women, who do not do a lot of sports.

PFP syndrome is more common in women and happens most often to teens and young adults.

Tight or weak leg muscles or flat feet can make someone more likely to get PFP syndrome.

That is a situation where you should see us sooner rather than later.

If you have a knee that feels loose, unstable or the knee is catching, you should see your doctor. If you have a vague ache with certain maneuvers, try resting, stretching, and wearing a knee sleeve. In some cases pain may subside within a few weeks.

Reducing The Load There Are Also Other Important Ways To Reduce The Strain On Your Knees

Pace yourself

If you are in pain dont tackle all your activities of daily living, such as housework, at once. Break the harder jobs down into smaller time frames and do something gentler in between. Sometimes a short rest when your knee starts to feel painful can be helpful over the course of a day. It is recommended to pace rather than to fully stop all forms of movement or exercise. You may find that taking simple painkillers as previously mentioned may help you to keep active.

High heels

Avoid high heels. This will alter the position of your leg and it can increase the strain into your knee and big toe.

Handrail

When climbing stairs you may need to consider using handrails and go up one leg at time until your muscles become stronger. It is better to go upstairs leading with the non-painful leg one step at a time. If coming down the stairs then lead with the sore leg one step at a time and use the handrail.
