Take On Household Chores
Over the next several weeks, the person youre caring for will likely be unable to do anything that involves standing for long periods of time, stretching, or bending.

Although they may be able to do light chores, like dusting, they wont be able to do any heavy cleaning. This typically means that vacuuming and laundry are out of the question. If possible, take on some of these chores or arrange for outside help.

Types Of Arthritis That Affect The Knee
Inflammatory arthritis

The Remainder Of Your Hospital Stay
DAY 1
- Your oxygen will probably be removed.
- Your operative leg will be put in a continuous passive motion machine, which will help you bend and straighten your knee. If you are out of the machine at night, your knee immobilizer will be put on to promote straightening.
- The nurse will encourage you to lift your leg off the bed. It may be a few days before you will be able to lift your leg on your own.
- You will get up to a chair with the assistance of the nursing staff. A soft splint will be on your leg to support it when you get up. When you can lift your leg off the bed on your own, the splint will be discontinued.
- Your exercise program with the physical therapist will begin, helping you to bend, straighten and gain strength in your new knee. You will begin walking with your walker with the physical therapist.
DAY 2
- If you have a drain, it will be removed by the nursing staff in the morning.
- Your IV will probably be discontinued, and the needle will be capped for a few days.
- Your exercise program will continue twice daily, helping you to bend, straighten and gain strength in your new knee. You will continue to walk further each day with your walker.
DAY 3-4
- You will continue physical therapy twice daily. When you can get in and out of bed alone, walk safely with your walker, and you have shown that you can climb stairs, you will be able to leave the hospital. This is usually the 3rd or 4th day after surgery.

Whether you will have a small, medium, long, or no scar at all depends on whether your doctor needs to make an incision . Some surgical procedures can be done without any cuts . Sometimes, the cuts and stitches are made inside. One example of this is a tonsillectomy .

What Exactly Is Anesthesia
Anesthesia is the medicine that puts you to sleep and makes you feel no pain during your surgery. There are two different types of anesthesia: local and general.

Also, its very important to let your health care provider/anesthesiologist know if you or any family members have ever had problems with anesthesia in the past, such as severe headaches, nausea, or a very sleepy feeling that took a long time to wear off. Unless you require emergency surgery, you should know which type of anesthesia youre going to have in advance.
When Should I See My Healthcare Provider
Your healthcare provider will tell you when to schedule an appointment for follow-up. But you should call if you develop:
- Fever higher than 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Lots of drainage on the dressing.
- Pain or swelling that is not relieved by resting or elevating the leg.
- Pus or foul-smelling drainage from any incisions.
- Trouble breathing.

When you’re delivering a baby, you need to think about an additional list of things. For labor and delivery, you may need:
- A birth plan, if you have one
- A camera, extra batteries, and plenty of storage devices

The Morning Of Surgery
On the day of your surgery, you should take a bath or shower. Your medical provider might give you specific instructions for bathing before your procedure. How Can I Prepare My Home For Recovery
If you live in a multiple-story house, prepare a bed and space on the ground floor so that you can avoid the stairs when you first return.
Make sure the house is free of obstructions and hazards, including power cords, area rugs, clutter, and furniture. Focus on pathways, hallways, and other places you are likely to walk through.
Make sure that:
Some surgeons recommend using a CPM machine in the hospital as well as at home while lying in bed.
A CPM machine helps increase knee motion during the first few weeks after surgery.
It can:

- help you maximize your early range of motion following your operation
If you are sent home with a CPM machine you should use it exactly as prescribed.
