No 2 Compression Socks And Knee Sleeve
Compression is a must-have after surgery. As weve discussed in other articles, compression will help reduce inflammation an swelling, and keep blood and fluid circulation moving through your leg rather than staying in your leg.
Directly after surgery youll be wearing a full-leg sock, but its wise to invest in a compression sleeve for your knee and compression socks for your leg. If needed these can be worn under clothes or in bed.
I wore mine religiously after surgery for a few weeks and now I wear during and after exercise or while flying. The best compression sleeves after TKR and socks will reduce the chance of blood clots in the leg!
Knee Strengthening Exercises To Improve Walking After Acl Surgery
Learning to walk again after ACL surgery is critical. This may sound odd at first but what were talking about is the ability to walk in the most optimal and efficient manner. In fact, the way we used to walk without thinking about it before we suffered our ACL injury. ACL recovery cannot be considered complete until were able to walk with our normal gait, i.e. without a limp, and this requires knee strengthening exercises.
Learning how to walk normally is extremely important because we need to overcome the brains ability to figure out interim solutions for us when were suffering pain. With an ACL injury the brain will have us swing the leg around as we walk rather than bend normally.
Unfortunately, this brain-influenced, artificial walk will remain long after the injury heals unless we take action to correct it and learn to walk properly. Long term, failure to make these corrections can cause problems in other parts of the body as further compensations are made.
Fortunately, there are lots of knee strengthening exercises that you can do to improve your walking and that will enable you to walk without a limp, to walk pain free and exercises that, at the same time, will strengthen the knee and improve its movement.
There are four major movements of the knee that need to be worked on such that the knee will work properly when walking.

Healing Gear: The Stuff You Need At Home After Knee Surgery
Recovery after surgery can be a long, bedraggled nightmare. But these products can help lift the load.
I write this as Im at 3 weeks recovered from my first total knee replacement. Its a big surgery with an extended period of recovery, rehabilitation, and rest. And I have another knee surgery coming up, so Im learning from my mistakes from the first time around. After years of knee injuries and pain, Im stoked to be on the right track.
Being a gear writer, its been interesting to note what Im grabbing as I ramble through recovery. Before surgery, I scoured the internet to see which gear might be helpful for knee surgery and little existed on the matter. Luckily, I have a platform to share with you whats worked for me.
From compression wear to icing machines to comfort items, heres whats helped me out in these first few weeks.
Knee Replacement Range Of Motion
Knee swelling will limit knee flexibility, but there is also healing and scarring of tissues to consider that will prevent a knee from bending and straightening. Patients need to slowly improve their flexibility so their knee does not heal stiff, but at the same time not push too much that they are aggravating the recovery and causing more swelling.
The normal knee range of motion is 0 degrees of knee extension to 135 degrees of knee flexion . It is not unusual for someone to have 5-10 degrees of hyperextension and knee flexion varies anywhere from 120-150 degrees.
The expected range of motion after knee replacement is 0 degrees of knee extension to at least 115 degrees of flexion or greater, but this can take several weeks or months to achieve. Starting out, the goal is to get the knee to bend to 90 degrees within the first week and then improve 5 to 10 degrees each week after that until full flexion is reached. Again, this timeline is variable from patient to patient.
It is important to achieve full knee extension for walking to feel more natural and have less knee pain. If you dont achieve full extension, it will feel like youre walking with 1 leg shorter than the other.

Arthroscopic Knee Surgery For Scar Tissue Removal: What To Expect
Knee surgery is often a procedure that comes after much conservative care is provided and knee complications do not resolve. If you have undergone knee surgery, there is a risk for developing scar tissue that may require further surgical intervention but typically this is removed by way of arthroscopic surgery. As a knee surgery patient, it is important to become familiar with the treatment you can expect after surgery is complete.
Like many surgeries affecting the joints, knee surgery can lead to further minor surgeries for the purpose of removing scar tissue build up. Even with the best treatment after surgery, the complications with scar build up is quite common and, as a result arthroscopic knee surgery scar tissue removal is often recommended.
If your doctor has recommended this type of arthroscopic surgery, it is most often after not only objective findings on x-ray or MRI, but also subjective complaints of stiffness, pain, and risks for further damage in the knee area. Performing an arthroscopic scar tissue removal will alleviate pain immediately but, in many cases, you will need to have further physical therapy and rehab to ensure scar tissue regeneration is minimal. It is important to follow your physicians recommendations with regard to your care.

Stationary Bike Or Traditional Bike
Both before and after my TKR, bicycling was an important part of my exercise and rehab routine. Traditional bikes and stationary bikes have made it easy to regain and maintain the range of motion in my knee joint.
I spent many hours bicycling before my surgery. Im fortunate to live near lightly traveled country roads. It made it pleasant and easy for me to ride 6 to 10 miles 4 to 5 times a week prior to my surgery.
Once a week I would try to ride 15 to 18 miles. I have a stationary bike in my local fitness center but I did not ride it much before surgery, as I preferred to be outside riding and enjoying the countryside.
After my surgery, it was a different story. It took me some time to get back on a traditional bicycle. The first day of my off-site therapy the therapist had me on the stationary bike .
It has been a regular part of my routine at the fitness center even now, months after surgery. I use the stationary bike to warm up before I use any other machines or do any other leg exercises.
It can be a bit boring but you can listen to music, read a book or watch TV to help make the time go by quicker. The advantages of a stationary bike include being able to ride it in all kinds of weather.
You can have one in your home or in your garage. The more accessible it is I find the more I use it. Like the recliner, they come in all price ranges. If you do not have either a stationary bike and or a traditional bike before surgery, put them both on your wish list.

What To Expect After Knee Replacement Surgery
When the surgery is over, you will need to stay in the hospitals recovery room for observation. Usually, patients can return to their hospital rooms within a few hours after their pulse, blood pressure, and breathing are stable. Since knee replacement is major surgery, its common for the patient to be in the hospital for a few days before returning home. You will begin physical therapy during this in-hospital time.
When its time to head home, your medical team will have a transition plan to help with continued physical therapy and pain management. Its crucial that you are diligent about following these recommendations to regain the range of motion and strength needed in the joint.
Keep Your Knee Straight
Its tempting to sit back and prop your leg on a pillow after knee surgery, but you should keep the joint completely straight after your procedure.
To support the healing process, keep your leg and foot pointing straight ahead whenever you lie down or sit. You should also avoid sitting in the same position for more than 45-60 minutes at a time and use a firm chair with armrests and a straight back, instead of stools, soft sofas, or low seats.

So a really top safety gift idea to help them stay out of trouble in their own home as they recover is to get them the Gorilla Grip shower mat.
As laying one of these shower mats down in their shower will give them something to grip to as they clean themselves up each morning and evening.
