BEST Supplements for Knee Pain! (Speed Your Recovery and Cure Patellar Tendonitis FAST)

France’s Gael Monfils holds his knee in pain after a point against Spain’s Tommy Robredo during the… 2013 French Open.

Knee pain is a very common problem, affecting young and old alike. Among athletes, knees take a beating, particularly in sports that involve running and twisting. Among older people, the cartilage that provides a cushion in our knees often just wears out, producing chronic stiffness and pain.

I’ve had knee problems myself, so I was interested to see an article posted on CNN, with content from Harvard Medical School called “Alternative Treatments for Knee Pain.” Would it describe “alternative” medicine, as in “complementary and alternative medicine,” or would it present real medicine for knee pain?

A little of both, as it turns out. But it does more: it inadvertently illustrates one of the major flaws with the U.S. health system. We don’t discriminate between effective and ineffective treatments, and some doctors seem content to let patients try anything, regardless of efficacy or cost.

The article describes several treatments for knee pain, and for each one it turns to Eric Berkson, M.D., for an opinion on how well the treatment works. Berkson is an orthopaedic surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Instructor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Despite this large and compelling study, Berkson says

“there’s a lot of evidence that they work, but only in a certain percentage of patients.”

Garlic And Root Vegetables

Garlic, onions, ginger and turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties. Various studies have shown that these pungent root vegetables can be useful in treating symptoms of arthritis and other joint pain. Incorporate these vegetables into meals for added flavor. Plus, theyre all available in a supplement.

How Vitamin C Reduces Knee Pain

People who obtain at least the recommended dietary intake of vitamin C, or higher, for example, are half as likely to develop osteoarthritis as those with lower intakes.

Vitamin C is essential for collagen synthesis and for the metabolism of joint cartilage. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant, especially in joint fluid.

Poor intakes of vitamin C can lead to reduced collagen formation and slow joint healing. In contrast, good intakes of vitamin C can reduce cartilage loss and disease progression in osteoarthritis, while its antioxidant action reduces joint inflammation.

Vitamin C stimulates bone-building cells to improve bone mineral density and support the overlying joint cartilage. Vitamin C may even help to prevent damage, cartilage loss and the development of osteoarthritis.

How Effective Are Vitamin C Supplements For Knee Pain

In the Framingham Osteoarthritis Cohort Study, who underwent regular knee x-rays, people with the highest vitamin C intakes were three times less likely to see their knee osteoarthritis progress than those with the lowest vitamin C intake. This protection was mostly related to a reduced risk of cartilage loss. Those with high vitamin C intake also had a 70% reduced risk of developing kneepain.

In the similar Clearwater Osteoarthritis Study, those who took vitamin C supplements were 11% less likely to develop knee osteoarthritis than those who did not take vitamin C supplements.

Vitamin C may also enhance the effects of glucosamine and chondroitin. A small trial involving 34 males from the U.S. Navy who had degenerative joint disease of the knee or lower back found good results from combing glucosamine HCl , chondroitin sulfate and vitamin C in the form of manganese ascorbate . After 16 weeks, knee pain in those with osteoarthritis was reduced by 26.6% using a pain scale recorded during clinic visits, while their physical examination score improved by 43.3%. The researchers concluded that this combination was effective in relieving symptoms of knee osteoarthritis.

Supplements That May Ease Arthritis Pain

These supplements seem to have anti-inflammatory properties and may decrease arthritic knee pain.

1.CurcuminThe chemical compound curcumin is found in turmeric, a plant root used in fresh or spice form to flavor cooking. Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties and seems to effectively treat knee arthritis symptoms.25

Curcumin accounts for only about 3% to 5% of turmeric,6,7 so a supplement may be the best way to get anti-inflammatory benefits from this substance. Look for products labeled as containing 95% curcuminoids.

2.GingerLike turmeric, ginger is also a plant root. In fact, ginger and turmeric are part of the same plant family, so it shouldnt come as a surprise that ginger also has anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce your knee pain.810 Ginger is available as a supplement but can also be used fresh in cooking or as a tea.

3.Omega 3 fatty acidsResearch suggests eating foods high in Omega 3 fatty acids can reduce knee arthritis pain and improve knee function.11 Most omega 3 supplements come in the form of fish oil, but some are plant-based, such as walnuts and flaxseeds. If youre not interested in supplements, you can also try following an anti-inflammatory diet thats rich in foods like fish and dark, leafy greens.

Can Joint Supplements Cause Side Effects

Before consuming any supplement, its a good idea to check whether its safe or not.

The good news is that most natural joint health supplements on the market will contain safe ingredients. The ingredients we recommend such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin havent shown to cause any adverse effects in clinical studies and remain as generally very safe ingredients to consume.

Always check whether the ingredients of a joint supplement are all-natural. If theyre completely natural, theyll likely be safe from side effects. Whereas chemicals or drugs obtained from questionable sources may cause side effects – this is also why its important to ensure all supplements you purchase are made from cGMP certified and FDA registered facilities.

What To Take For Knee Pain

What can I do to make my knee pain go away? is an all too common question. As knee pain becomes more prevalent in todays society as people live longer and with higher BMIs, myths and cures for the ailment have exploded. Supplements, in particular, have become extremely popular in recent years as people try and find alternative ways in dealing with often very painful knees. Word-of-mouth, the rise of alternative medicine, distrust in our healthcare system, and ease of access are also contributors to their increasing popularity. And so even if you, as a patient, are proactive in doing your research on supplements and medications, it is difficult to differentiate fact from fiction and you end up staring at an aisle of hundreds of pill bottles at your local drugstore without a clue and leaving with your wallet a little emptier and your mind still not much at ease.

NSAIDs are over-the-counter medications with overwhelming support for their effectiveness in managing knee pain and other osteoarthritis symptoms. However, many negative side effects are attributed to their use, and increasingly so at high doses and with long-term use, and so it is important to take care in choosing which one is best for you and to talk with your doctor before starting one of these medications.

What Can I Do For My Joint Pain

This is a common question I hear almost every day. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is very common in people especially over the age of 30.

The joints that are most commonly affected include the ones that take the most weight bearing and abuse such as the following:

  • spine

This is also called wear and tear arthritis.

People who have sustained sports injuries are at greater risk of degeneration of the joint. Common every day activities do produce some wear and tear on the joints particularly if the body weight is increased. Even a 5 pound weight gain transmits five times which would equal 25 extra pounds of pressure to the lower body joints, so maintaining a normal body weight is very important.

Stretching and strengthening exercises are very important as they stabilize the joints. Since the tendons, joints and cartilage do not have any direct blood vessels, movement In the form of activity, specifically aerobic exercise that gets the heart rate up is important for diffusing both oxygen and nutrients into the joints.

Glucosamine And Chondroitin For Knee Pain

Glucosamine and chondroitin are produced naturally in the body as building blocks needed to make cartilage, tendons, ligaments and synovial fluid. Their production declines with age, and it is often in short supply, especially when active joint repair is needed.

Glucosamine and chondroitin regulate the levels of at least 31 different proteins in cartilage cells which are involved in cartilage health, antioxidant stress responses, and the synthesis of new proteins such as collagen. Glucosamine and chondroitin act as biological signals to switch on the repair of damaged joint tissues, and suppress the inflammation and breakdown of cartilage that is a feature of osteoarthritis.

As you get older, your cartilage cells secrete less and less glucosamine and chondroitin. As a result, cartilage becomes more brittle and prone to the degenerative changes seen in ageing joints.

How Effective Are Turmeric Supplements For Knee Pain

Natural Supplements for Arthritis to Get Rid of Knee Pain

A study involving 367 people with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis found that taking turmeric curcumin extracts for 4 weeks was as effective in reducing knee pain, knee stiffness and improving knee joint function as ibuprofen but with fewer gastrointestinal side effects.

Turmeric can be combined with glucosamine and chondroitin to produce a faster onset of action and improved results.

I recommend selecting a turmeric supplement that provides solubilised turmeric, as this is 185 times better absorbed than normal turmeric powder, for a more rapid onset of action.
