You Notice An Obvious Deformity
If you notice your knee jutting outward in a way it never has before, take note. A dislocated or fractured patella can cause injuries like this, explains Brian Schwabe, C.S.C.S., board-certified sports physical therapist based in Los Angeles.
While some deformities occur over time, when the deformity is a result of an injury, it could be the result of a fracture or chronic wear on the knee joint. If you are already experiencing any kind of misalignment in your lower extremities, then you could be more prone to this type of injury.
If you notice a bone deformity after an injury, he recommends seeking the assistance of an orthopedic doctor immediately. The doctor will likely take x-rays as well as perform a visual diagnosis to determine if you need surgery.
Why Aging Contributes To Knee Fat
Theres no doubt about it having blobby legs can make you look 20 years older than the rest of you. Your metabolism starts to slow down with age and your toned muscle starts to wither away too . And the less muscle you have then the higher your body fat is going to be. When your body fat gets too high this is how stubborn fat develops in areas youre genetically prone to.
As you age your body naturally starts to produce less and less collagen . Collagen is the single most abundant protein in your body . Many skin experts call it the structural support for your skin. As you lose collagen your skin elasticity will also decline . This skin elasticity is what allows your skin to snap back to its tightness. Without enough collagen in your body, youll then start to experience more saggy loose skin as well as cellulite. Studies have found supplementing with collagen can restore this loss of skin elasticity . This is the collagen I take daily.
Getting your hormones under control is going to be key to optimizing your body fat levels. Insulin, estrogen, and cortisol are the 3 big ones for women. Eating carb and sugar rich foods can cause your insulin levels to get out of control putting you in a fat storing mode . Insulin can be controlled by eating low sugar and low insulinemic foods like those in my Flat Belly Formula program.
Bonus #6 Rest Smart Rest More
Make sure that you are getting adequate sleep while you rehabilitate your knee. This seems like such a simple option, but few people include this in their recovery plan.
Increasing sleep can help increase muscle protein synthesis, therefore increasing your leg muscle development, and eventual return to sport performance .
It is also during sleep that Human Growth Hormone is maximally released . HGH has many benefits, increased protein synthesis, increased lean muscle development, and increased rate of healing in your bones, muscles, and even tendons and ligaments.
In other words, the more you sleep, the more HGH you will have in your system, and the faster you will recover.
Along with sleep, it is crucial that you are getting enough rest between workouts, especially when training atrophied muscles that you are just starting to rebuild. There isnt an exact rule I can give for the recovery you will need, so listen to your body.
After both of my knee surgeries, I lost more than 2 inches from the circumference of my thigh. My quads and hamstrings were very weak, and they took noticeably longer to recover post-workout compared to my healthy leg. If you typically take 2 days off between leg workouts, be prepared to give yourself a third day, remembering that more work is not always better when it comes to building muscle and strength.

What Should I Expect During Treatment
Both the Evolve Tite and Evolve Tone treatments are relatively quick, non-invasive, in-office treatments. Your provider attaches the applicators to your legs and turns on the machine. Evolve Tite treatments last 30-40 minutes, and an Evolve Tone treatment is over in around 20 minutes. Most patients say the treatments arent painful, and some find the sensations relaxing. However, the equipment does have a button to pause your treatment if the sensations become overwhelming.
You dont need any downtime to recover after either treatment. You can return to work, school, or any other activities right away. Most patients have a series of treatments to optimize their results and feel confident about their smooth, toned legs.

Assessing Risk Before Surgery

When trying to predict the likelihood of stiffness after a knee replacement, the most important thing to consider is how well you can move your knee before having surgery. People who have stiff knees heading into knee replacement surgery usually have stiffer knees after the operation.
Those who can easily move the knee before having surgery are less likely to have stiffness after surgery.
There are steps that can be taken at the time of surgery to help release tight ligaments and tissues around the joint. These methods can also help remove any damaged pieces of cartilage or bone that are interfering with movement. But sometimes the flexibility of the tissues is limited to a point that cannot be fully corrected.

Why Surgery Doesnt Work For Sagging Knees
While many people may think of surgery to reduce sagging skin, this is not a good option for drooping skin near the knees. While some may benefit from a thigh lift to reduce drooping skin, patients who are concerned about wrinkles in the knees in particular are not good candidates for surgery. Because the knees stretch and bend so much, scars in this area are susceptible to poor outcomes like hypertrophic scars. It is also difficult to make incisions near the knees that can be easily hidden, so surgery is not usually recommended.
Your Knee Keeps Buckling
When you got hurt, did it feel like your knee gave way underneath you? Were not talking about a temporary sensation of weakness or some wobbliness, but more like your shin and thigh bone werent connecting or staying in place. A buckling knee could signal an ACL tear or a cruciate ligament injury.
It could start with a small pop or crack, or you could feel it after a strenuous exercise session or a soccer game.
Either way, your knee feels unstable or weak. Your knee may give out momentarily, which is scary because you might not trust yourself to walk safely when this happens. According to Dr. Howard Luks, an orthopedic surgeon, this could indicate a tear in the patella or the quadriceps tendon.
These tendons are on the front of your knees and offer a lot of support to keep you upright. If theyre not in top form, youre bound to feel weak in the knees , and you might not be able to walk at all. If this is the case, you could need surgery.
On the other hand, the weakness could be temporary, caused by wear and tear, improper footwear, or a strain. If youre a weekend warrior or youre over the age of 30 , you might experience this symptom on a regular basis.
However, if the weakness is recurring and happens every time you exercise, its possible you have a time bomb thats waiting to happen. When in doubt, seek advice from a physician.
If your knee buckles under you when you are walking, then it usually indicates instability, she says.

Why Is My Knee Skin So Loose
Several factors can contribute to the development of sagging skin around the knees. The skin over your knees needs to be loose to a certain degree so that your joint can flex and bend. This bending creates tremendous stress on the knee joints, but also on knee skin. Over time, the tissues begin to lose their structural integrity and skin becomes ultra-saggy.
Baggy knees may also be the result of:
- Collagen loss
- Lack of hydration
- Weight loss
In addition to all these things, women can thank menopause for their sagging knee skin. The associated hormonal changes give the body less energy for repairing and rebuilding collagen. As a result, the skin thins and grows crepe-y with fine lines and wrinkles.

Take A Pain Pill Or Tylenol Substitute Before Exercises
Early on I always took a pain pill 30 minutes before my in-home therapy session. Once I weaned myself off the pain medicine, I took a Tylenol pill.
I continued to take a Tylenol pill before my off-site therapy sessions too. Taking the medication made it easier for me to do my rehab, especially the range of motion exercises.
How Can You Fix Saggy Knees
For those hoping to rehab this region, there exist both nonsurgical and surgical solutions. Generally speaking, doctors find that combining energy-based devices with collagen-growing injectables works best for improving mild to moderate laxity on patients of all skin tones who are within range of their ideal body weight. If sagging is more severe, surgeryremoving excess fat and/or skincould be considered in lieu of or along with noninvasive measures, Dr. Mahmood tells us. Here, a rundown of the best options.

Building Muscles Above The Knee
The area of the leg above the knee is typically called the thigh. The thigh muscles consist of the quadriceps and hamstrings, among others. The term toning muscle is used typically to describe the tighter and more firm feeling that occurs when someone builds muscle and is lean. The physiological effects of building and toning muscle are the same since toning is not a technical term.
Many people believe that toning creates smaller, more lean muscles, while building muscle creates bulk â a fear of some women who are strength training and do not wish to look bulky. Muscle is compact, however, and women have a tough time gaining bulk due to a lack of testosterone. To reduce the effect of looking bulky while gaining muscle, one only has to lose any excess fat that is covering the muscles.
Strength training your thighs will help them become shapely, strong and most importantly, functional in your daily activity. There is no reason to lift light weights for many repetitions to try and avoid getting too bulky.
The American Council on Exercise recommends strength training for the following benefits:
The Anatomy Of The Knee

Before looking into how to rehab your own injury, it is important that you understand a bit of the anatomy of the knee. This will make it easier to follow the instructions later on.
There are several main muscles that surround the knee. The first set is the Quadriceps muscles, which are grouped on the anterior side of your thigh and attach to the knee via the Quadriceps Tendon. On the posterior of your thigh you have the Hamstring muscles, which attach to the knee via the Hamstring tendon.
The bone structure of the knee is made up of the Femur , the Patella and the Tibia . There are two types of ligaments in the knee. The Collateral ligaments are found on the sides of your knee, while the Cruciate ligaments cross over the knee.
Finally, the Meniscus is a type of fibrous cartilage that provides support, stability, and shock absorption for the knee.

Get Your Leg Knee And Muscles Ready For Surgery
Do your best to strengthen your knee before surgery. The stronger your muscles and supporting structures around your knee are pre-surgery the better your recovery will be.
I couldnt lift weights with my knee but I could ride a bike and swim without pain. Find some type of exercise that is comfortable for you and start exercising your leg months before your surgery.
Massage Around The Knee Often
Massage definitely was a plus in my recovery. My caregiver usually gave me at least one extended massage on the sides of my knee and on the back of my knee.
I massaged my knee myself before my 3 daily exercise sessions. A massage right before bedtime also felt great.
I used the product Free Up Massage Cream that my therapist recommended. Other kinds of lotion or cream work well too.

How Much Does It Cost
As with other cosmetic procedures, knee liposuction isnt considered to be medically necessary, so it isnt covered by insurance. The nationwide average for liposuction procedures is $3,518. Your overall cost will vary depending on your location and your providers fees.
Aside from your plastic surgeon, you may need to consider other costs such as anesthesia and outpatient facility fees, as well as supplies and medications required after your procedure.
To offset the overall costs, many plastic surgeons offer payment plans, financing, and possible discounts. Be sure to ask about your options before booking your procedure. You may also need to take time off work.
You Felt Or Heard A Pop
Sometimes, a popping sound after a movement can indicate something is out of place.
Oftentimes this type of sound upon injury is indicative of a ligamentous injury, says Schwabe. Not all ligamentous injuries are full tears, though, and not all require surgery.
However, if you also experience excessive swelling and instability, get it checked out by an M.D. If you only have a mild sprain then you will be able to rehab it with physical therapy, he says.
The pop is what you hear as a result of a ligament tear, a meniscus tear, strained tendons, or a dislocated kneecap. Usually what happens is youll simultaneously hear and feel the pop.
If youre not familiar with the meniscus, its the cartilage in the knee that functions as a shock absorber. Each knee has two menisci, and theyre shaped like horseshoes. The medial meniscus is on the inside of the knee, and the lateral meniscus is on the outside.
The popping sensation can be difficult to explain, but youll certainly know it when it happens to you. Though the sound originates in the knee, youll hear it as though it was directly in your ear. Its as if the sensation travels up your body, and when it gets to your brain, it becomes audible.
If the pain is severe, youll want to visit a doctor as soon as possible. Surgery is often the recommended course of action, but physical therapy and other non-invasive remedies may be prescribed as alternatives.

But even he came to admit, days later, that once you start noticing knees, its kind of hard to stop.
