The combination of glucosamine and chondroitin may help with osteoarthritis treatment. While the ACR in general doesn’t recommend the use of either supplement alone, some studies have found that the combination can lead to some improvement of symptoms.

In a study published in April 2016 in the journal Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, taking glucosamine and chondroitin for 12 weeks or longer appeared to give participants more ease of movement. And according to a study published in May 2015 in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, taking the combination over the course of a year led to less joint pain, and taking it for two years led to less joint space narrowing than a placebo.

Early evidence has shown that the natural vegetable extract called avocado soybean unsaponifiables could be an effective osteoarthritis treatment that might even slow progression of the disease and reduce dependence on narcotic drugs, according to a research review published in January 2015 in the journal Cartilage.

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a biomechanical and physiological disease. The cartilage that provides a buffer between bones breaks down and wears away, allowing the bones to rub and grind against each other, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons .

Medications And Steroid Injections

  • Corticosteroids. The most effective type of medicine for knee arthritis, triamcinolone acetonide , is the only FDA-approved medication to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. This is a corticosteroid injected into your knee that releases medicine slowly over a 3-month period. The slow release of the medicine has been found to relieve pain and swelling and reduce some of the negative side effects of steroids, such as increased blood sugar.
  • Topical pain relievers. The Arthritis Foundation recommends that people who have knee arthritis try topical pain relievers which is medicine you apply directly on the skin, instead of taking by mouth because it can help relieve pain without as many side effects.
  • Hyaluronic acid injection. Although more research on this remedy for knee arthritis is needed, it has often been used to help supplement fluids in the knee joint to decrease pain.

New Study Reveals That Surgery May Not Actually Relieve Knee Pain1

If your knee is constantly sore and creaky, the idea of replacing it with a new “strong”, metal-and-plastic version of the joint can be seductive.

The surgery seems so easy and promises so much: better mobility, less pain, a resemblance, almost, of youth.

But there is growing evidence that knee-replacement surgery results may not match the hype and that many people considering the procedure would be better off saving the money, recovery time and disappointment.

In fact, as recently reported by NPR.org1:

“…13 studies involving nearly 1,700 patients found the surgery did not provide lasting pain relief or improve function for most of them. Those studies compared the surgery with a variety of options, including physical therapy, exercise and even placebo surgery.

Fewer than 15 percent of patients felt an improvement in pain and function three months after the procedure, and that those effects disappeared after one year, the review found. In addition, the surgery exposed patients to ‘rare but important harms’, such as infection.”

Casey Quinlan, 64, of Richmond, VA., said the procedure did not deliver. “It was not what I was told to expect,” she said.

Steroid Injections To Reduce Inflammation

Steroid injections for knee pain are typically corticosteroids shots. Cortisone mimics the effects of a substance called cortisol that is naturally produced by the adrenal glands.

Steroids help reduce the inflammation and offer pain relief, because knee pain is often caused by inflamed tissue.

It usually takes about three to seven days for steroid injections to work to their full effect. But its possible to feel relief as soon as 24 hours.

Though they offer significant pain relief, the effects of steroid injections are temporary. On average, steroid shots relieve pain for three months, though you may feel relief for up to six months.

Steroid injections may cause side effects. Its common to experience minor pain and swelling in the knees for a couple days after the shot. Your doctor will be able to answer any questions you have about side effects.

Side Effects Of Injection Therapies

Side effects include a very low risk of infection and pain at the injection site. You also must stop taking oral anti-inflammatory medications for a short amount of time if you get a PRP injection, Dr. Genin says.

Often, many of these injections are effective in reducing or stopping your joint pain, but its important to remember that they may not keep the pain from returning, Dr. King notes. Genicular Artery Embolization : New Knee Replacement Technology In 2021

There is exciting news for patients looking for an alternative to knee replacement surgery in 2021. It is a procedure called genicular artery embolization, and it is used to treat osteoarthritis.

A recent study shows that the procedure is effective at significantly reducing patients knee pain, particularly those dealing with moderate-to-severe knee pain. The study showed continued improvement at each of the one-month, three-month, and six-month checkups, which included an MRI scan. Patients felt the increased improvement over time, and the MRI showed it.

Another 2020 study tested 10 patients that received GAE treatment. At the 12-month mark, patients reported:

  • Median pain: 15.4% improvement
  • Knee/leg function: 21.3% improvement
  • Quality of life: 100% improvement

Follow-up tests were completed, namely a six-minute walk and 30-second chair stand test. Scores for walk and chair stand tests improved by 26% and 43% respectively.

No adverse reactions were reported as well.

So your doctor has delivered you the news that your knee pain is due to bone on bone pressure within the joint. What exactly does this mean? Before we look at the causes of bone on bone knee pain we first need to understand the anatomy of a healthy knee.

Inside a healthy knee, between the bones, there is soft spongy tissue called cartilage. Cartilage comes in two types hyaline and articular. The former is what your meniscus is made out of.
