My knee pops and cracks. What could it be?

According to a 2018 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery review and a 2018 review published inClinical Anatomy, joint cracking could happen because of bubbles between your joints. Scientists generally believe that joint cracking happens in these four phases:

  • However, scientists debate what exactly causes the cracking noise. One common theory is that the collapse of the bubbles creates a loud sound. Other researchers believe that the quick formation of a bubble is what makes the noise.

    • Lie on your stomach and place your affected knee on the midi foam roller.
    • Bend the affected leg back so you can put the stretching strap around your foot.
    • Press your groin into the floor and slowly pull the strap towards your buttocks. Youll feel a stretch along your thigh and at your knee.
    • Intensify the stretch until you reach between 8 and 9 on your personal pain scale.
    • Hold for 2 to 2.5 minutes.
    • Slowly release your leg from the stretch and repeat on the other side.

    If you find that your foot reaches your buttocks easily, continue pulling it back with your hands.

    Avoid this common mistake: Do not raise your hips while you pull your foot back keep pressing your hip bone into the floor. If you raise your hips, you wont stretch the intended area.

    Causes Of Knee Popping And Pain

    • Torn meniscus: The meniscus can tear if someone suddenly rotates or bends the knee with significant force. The injury can cause:
    • a catching feeling or popping sound with movement

  • A torn anterior cruciate ligament : A tear in the ACL, is the most common knee injury, and causes a loud popping noise, typically followed by severe pain and significant swelling. A person may not be able to stand on the affected leg.
  • Lateral collateral ligament sprain: This injury may cause a popping sound, pain, stiffness, and weakness.
  • Torn medial collateral ligament : A tear in the MCL can cause swelling, pain, and a popping noise. The pain ranges from mild to severe depending on whether the ligament is stretched or torn.
