Kt Tape For Knee Stability

Meniscus And Knee Joint Stability

Knee Taping for Stability: Meniscus Tear, ACL Strain and Cartilage

The knee joint is inherently unstable. The top of your tibia is essentially flat, whereas the bottom of the femur is rounded. This allows for motions like knee extension and knee flexion , but as you can imagine, these bones dont exactly fit together like puzzle pieces, as many other joints in the body do.

You can picture the meniscus as sitting on top of the flat surface of the tibia, which actually called the tibial plateau. If you were to look down on top of the tibia from a birds eye view, the meniscus would look like a Figure-8, and its thicker on the outside than on the inside, thus forming a sort of socket. The helps deepen the joint, which creates a better fit for the rounded end of the femur.

At the same time, KT Tape has been growing in popularity for a reason since the 1970s. For Anterior Knee Pain

If you have pain in the front and center of your knee, its called anterior knee pain. Its commonly caused by patellofemoral pain syndrome or knee arthritis.

Often, the first technique mentioned in this article is used for this issue. But you can try a similar method with pre-cut Y-shaped tape.

Youll need clean skin and two Y strips .

To apply:

  • Cut the long Y strip to 1 to 2 feet. Sit on the edge of a bench, knee bent.
  • Peel the first inch of tape. Secure in the middle of the thigh. Split the Y and remove the backing.
  • Stretch the tails to 25 to 50 percent. Apply on each side of the kneecap. Rub to activate the adhesive.
  • Peel the first inch of the small Y strip. Secure on the outer side of the kneecap, split the Y, and remove the backing.
  • Stretch the tails to 50 percent. Apply the tails above and below the kneecap. Rub to activate.
  • Knee tape can adhere quite well. When its time to take it off, consider these suggestions:

    Aim Of Lcl Sprain Taping

The aim of taping for a lateral knee ligament sprain is to provide support and protection to the injured ligament. The LCL is a narrow ligament which connects the femur to the fibula on the outside of the knee.

If the LCL is sprained, this means it is stretched, partially torn or in rare cases completely ruptured. Support strips of tape are applied along the length of the injured ligament to reinforce it. The support strips help prevent sideways movement of the knee joint, which would put stress on the LCL and as a result prevent healing.

If you have had badly torn or stretched ligaments in the past then lateral knee ligament taping provides extra support and stability to the joint, in the same way a hinged knee brace would.

Tape provides a high level of support for a shorter period of time. Tape will naturally stretch within the first hour or two, depending on the demands you place on it. Then it should be re-applied.

    Final Knee Taping Considerations

    KT tape for Knee

There are multiple ways to tape the knee, and an athlete should choose which one matches their goals best. If the goal is proprioception and proper movement patterns, then an athlete will fair best utilizing the first method above. For stability, an athlete may find that the second technique is the better option.

Other Methods To Manage Knee Pain

Taping should be only one part of an overall plan to manage your knee pain. Depending on the cause, your treatment plan may also include:

Weight loss. Being overweight puts a lot of stress on your joints. For every 1 pound of extra weight you carry, 2 to 4 pounds of extra pressure is placed on your knees. If youre overweight, losing weight is the most important thing you can do for your knees.

Physical therapy. Exercise can help strengthen your knee and improve your range of motion. If you have arthritis, physical therapy may focus on strengthening your hips. When your hips are weak, your knees have to do more work. A physical therapist can also help you figure out whether you need braces or assistive devices.

Medicines. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help with flare-ups but can cause problems when you take them long-term. Topical NSAIDs in the form of creams or gels may be a good option.

Injection therapy.Corticosteroid shots to your knee can offer pain relief for some people. Hyaluronic acid injections may provide longer-lasting relief. Platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections are two other options, but they arent covered by insurance.

Below we have mentioned some tips so that you can comfortably remove the Kinesio and other tapes:

    • Oiling: Apply oil directly on the tape. Baby oil or olive oil is the best to rub properly on the tape. Wait for around 10-20 minutes before removing to reduce the stickiness of the tape.
    • Remove the tape: After 20 minutes, remove the tape slowly to prevent damage to the skin.
    • Rolling: Rather than pulling the tape, roll it back because it is less painful.
    • Do not move opposite to the hair growth: Always move the tape in the direction of hair growth. It will reduce skin irritation.
    • Tighten the skin: Do not forget to tighten the skin while peeling the tape. To reduce the discomfort, tug the skin in the opposite direction.

Apart from this, you can also use lotion, ice, or take a warm shower to remove the tape without any discomfort. It can also loosen the stickiness of the tape.
