What Is Kt Tape And How Does It Work
So KT Tape seems like some magic sports medicine tape, but dont be fooled: theres nothing magical and mysterious about this athletic tape. To the contrary, the success of KT Tape is all about science. Its not even all that new! In fact, the first versions of KT Tape emerged back in the 1970s when Japanese-American chiropractor Kenzo Kase developed an extra-strong adhesive athletic tape in order to keep the joints of his patients in proper alignment after they left his office.
Kase worked long and hard to find an alternative to the adhesive tapes of the day. In fact, he poured research into this therapeutic tape, designing it to mimic many of the characteristics of human skin. Its thickness and its elasticity, its breathability, and its flexibility were all inspired by the function of human skin. The result was a cotton-based tape that was combined with an acrylic adhesive backing. Partially heat-activated to allow it to stick to hold fast to the body and latex-free to ensure placement wouldnt cause rashes or other allergic reactions, Kases new Kinesio tape was born. Slowly but surely its been growing in popularity ever since, until it began regularly showing up on Olympic athletes at the 2008 Summer Games and beyond.

What Is Kt Tape
KT tape is, as the name implies, a tape that you apply to your muscles.
More specifically, it consists of a stretchy, thin, elastic tape with an acrylic adhesive that offers sensory input into an area but still allows for the full range of motion.
KT tape is virtually identical to human skin in both elasticity and thickness, which helps the taped area move without restraint and provides support to muscles and joints.
Although just recently popular, KT tape has been around for decades. Dr. Kenzo Kase developed the technology in 70s as an effort to provide more practical solutions for his patients.
The initial design consisted of a super-strong adhesive tape to help maintain proper alignment in the joints of his patients after leaving his office.
Dr. Kenzo looked into methods to promote the bodys natural halting mechanisms and extend the benefits of his treatments after his patients left his clinic.
By that time, Kase had worked hard to come up with better alternatives to the adhesive tapes of the day.
The Japanese doctor spends hours and hours looking into the applications of therapeutic tape and designing it in such a way to mimic many of the features of the human skin.
The elasticity, thickness, flexibility, and breathability of the KT tape were all inspired by the characteristics of the human skin.
What about science?
Research has reported that the use of KT tape can soothe the pain for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis, reduce pain and improve joint mobility.

There may be arthritis, plica, chondromalacia, or any number of issues with the bones that constitute the knee. The beauty of this application is the breadth of conditions it covers with its relatively simple effects of balancing the muscles effect on the knee and relieving pressure on the kneecap and its tendon.
Causes of knee pain
Knee issues arise from equally as many causes. Muscle imbalances, poor running form, misaligned hips or poor posture, poor nutrition, overtraining, compensation for another injury, hyperextension, arthritis, and blunt trauma to ligaments are just a few of the most common causes of knee pain. Common effective treatments among all of these conditions include increasing circulation, providing support, reducing pressure, and maintaining range of motion.
How KT Tape can help provide knee support
KT Tape serves all of these purposes without the downsides of bracing or wrapping. Kinesiology tape provides extra support so you can stay in motion and focus on the activities you love.
The key to successful taping is proper application. To effectively use it, its important to pay attention to the taping technique, start with a clean area, and ensure that you adjust the tension appropriately for your body and activity level.
Below are some general instructions for applying KT tape:
1) Clean the application area with soap and water before applying the tape.
2) Cut 1-2 inch pieces of tape based on the size of the area being treated .
3) Align one side of the tape lightly onto the skin without stretching it. This forms an anchor point for other strips of the same piece or different strips applied consecutively.
4) Peel away roughly half of the paper while keeping your other hand extended forward over where that piece will be placed.
5) Apply with hands firmly on the persons skin in direction of adhesive flow as indicated by arrows printed directly on the back paper side in center strip patterning then, insert middle fingers behind the stretch tension panel below the adhesive backing while simultaneously engaging the anchor points onto skin surface.
7) Ensure completion by peeling away the remaining back plastic side to the uninvolved persons hand allowing middle finger removal applied directly next following patterns already depicted earlier.
