  • Align your knee over your second toe.
  • Dont lead with your foot, lead with your body. Bend your torso forward to redistribute the force of your weight from the knee to the hamstrings at the back of the thigh.
  • Place the heel of your foot on the step before you step up.
  • Repeat the steps for each stair you climb.

    Narrow steps can be especially tricky if you have arthritis because they dont allow your full foot onto each step. Its important to put your foot fully on each step as you climb up stairs, so you can push off the step using your heel rather than the ball of your foot.

    If you push up from your heel, that will shift the work from the front of your knees and quads which may cause pain to your glutes, which are stronger muscles, says Dr. Minhas.

    Its also important to wear supportive shoes when you climb up and down stairs. If the arches of your feet collapse flat when you stand, it pushes your knees inward, which can cause pain and stress in your knees.

    Having your knees go inward is one of the worst things you can do when going up stairs, so look for shoes that have good arch support and that you can walk around at home in, says Dr. Minhas. That will counteract the natural tendency for the arch to collapse.

    Consider getting a new pair of indoor shoes just for wearing at home. This will reduce foot pain that comes from spending too much time barefoot. Foot pain can exacerbate knee pain.

    One of the questions I get asked all the time in my Denver personal training sessions is âhow can I climb stairs with my bad knees?â Stair climbing is a challenging move, even with perfectly functioning knees, because it involves balancing on a single leg, lifting the whole body weight against gravity , shifting the weight to the other leg, and coordinating the movements of three joints and lots of muscles in each leg.

    Worn out knee cartilage makes stair climbing downright painful for many people, but a few changes in your approach can ease the pressure on the joint and make stair climbing more manageable.

    As always, please see your doctor before you attempt these exercises. Knees are complicated, and what works for some people might not be appropriate for your unique situation.

    With your doctorâs ok, give these four techniques a try.

    Stabilize the knee joint. Lack of muscle stability allows joints to move out of alignment which causes excessive and unusual wear and tear on the cartilage between the bones. In a weight-bearing joint like the knee, a lack of stability in the surrounding muscles means the joint itself, rather than the muscles, is bearing all the weight and pressure of the body.     Moment Arm Going Down Stairs

    Now lets take a look at the moment arm length when going down stairs. In this instance I am stepping down from the step to the floor.

    As I start to step down my bodyweight presses down through the front of my back foot. Once again, the ground reaction force works upward from the point of contact .

    We work out the external knee flexion moment arm length out in the same way as the two previous examples. The green arrow points from the centre of the knee back to where it meets the ground reaction force line.

    Straight away you should be able to see that the moment arm in green is much longer than in the previous two examples. Remember a longer moment arm is like a longer lever, it places more force through the knee.

    Sometimes the cause of your knee pain is obvious: a twist, misstep or strain can strike at any time during a walk or a run. Other times, patients can suffer knee pain without injury and are unsure of the source of their discomfort.

    Youll need to consult with a physician to determine the cause of your knee pain, but there are several common causes of knee pain without injury.

    How Is Pfp Syndrome Treated

    Someone with patellofemoral pain syndrome needs to limit or completely avoid activities that cause pain. Sometimes a change in training is all thats needed. For example, someone who usually runs hills to train can try running on a flat, soft surface instead.

    A person who has severe pain or pain that interferes with activity needs to rest the knee until the pain is better.

    For pain:

    • Put ice or a cold pack on the knee every 12 hours for 15 minutes at a time. Put a thin towel between the ice and your skin to protect it from the cold.
    • You can take ibuprofen or naproxen . Follow the directions that come with the medicine for how much to take and how often. Do not take this medicine for longer than about 23 weeks.

    An important part of the treatment for PFP syndrome is improving the strength and flexibility of the legs, hips, and core muscles. Health care providers usually recommend going to a physical therapist to make an exercise plan that will help. The plan may include stretching, squats, planks, lunges, and other exercises that improve strength and flexibility of the legs and hips.

There are several reasons that this issue could lead to pain during this activity, and one of them is the effect that muscle imbalances can have on the kneecap. The kneecap is supposed to slide along a v-shaped groove at the end of the thighbone. Muscle weakness in the thigh or calf muscles can pull the kneecap out of position, and this means it could rub against the bone as the knee bends while going up stairs. In turn, the rubbing causes pain signals to be sent out from the knee.

    Knee muscle imbalances can also lead to other symptoms in addition to pain. Some patients might have more difficulty bending the knee normally or other range-of-motion issues.
