If they are hypertensive, the hypertension would have to be in good control. Overweight patients will have to lose weight.
Patients may need to make some changes around the home. They should declutter to provide open spaces to move after surgery and install equipment such as ramps, handrails and bath mats to help avoid falls. Its a good idea to set up areas in the home where the patient can sit and sleep comfortably with things they may need, such as glasses, phones, medications, water and snacks close at hand.

In the last decade, a growing number of orthopaedic surgeries have started moving from the hospital setting to outpatient surgery centers. Surgeries that previously required a multi-day stay in the hospital can now be done as same-day outpatient surgeries.
The opportunity to perform knee replacement surgery in an outpatient setting is revolutionizing the field of joint replacement. From 2012 to 2015, there was a 47% increase in outpatient hip and knee replacement procedures.
Same-day outpatient surgery comes with a lower risk of complications, and the vast majority of patients prefer to recover in the comfort of their own homes. Reduced cost is another reason why patients prefer to have knee replacement done in an outpatient setting.
At my practice, the goal is for all of my patients under age 70 to go home on the same day as their surgery. Approximately 40% of the patients I see who need knee replacement surgery are under the age of 65, and these are the patients I would most like to see having their same-day knee replacement done in an outpatient surgery center.
Factors I consider when determining which patients are good candidates for same-day outpatient knee replacement surgery include:

What Is Different Why Can I Go Home The Same Day
Whether you stay in the hospital or go home, you had the same procedure your knee was replaced. Many contemporary techniques make same day knee replacement surgery possible today.
- Better techniques to control blood loss: The need for blood monitoring now is minimal. Blood transfusions are very rare after a knee replacement nowadays. This allows us to send you home much sooner because we do not need to check your blood count for a few days.
- Pain management techniques have changed. Managing pain after a knee replacement used to involve only narcotics. That made people nauseous and slowed their recovery. By using nerve blocks, injections into and around the knee joint, and by employing many non-narcotic pain medications the need for narcotics have diminished.
- Better home care services. You will require physical therapy and perhaps a nurse to check in on you at home. Those services are readily available now.

Can Total Knee Replacements Go Home The Same Day As Surgery
Advances in modern medicine have made procedures that were historically considered a big deal, much easier on the patients. The first patients to receive a total hip replacement required months of hospitalization to recover. However, the surgical techniques have evolved to make incisions smaller. Techniques in post-operative pain control have advanced beyond zonking patients out with high doses of narcotics . Now patients getting a total knee replacement receive nerve blocks that remove pain from around the knee for many hours, and combinations of medications prevent painful inflammation while preventing the pain signal from reaching the brain. Additionally, surgery is shorter and less traumatic so there is less blood loss. Medications now prevent the need to transfuse patients as commonly as before. All of this means that a total knee replacement has become easier on the patient. But how easy? And does this mean patients dont need to stay in the hospital after surgery? Or if they do, can they leave after only one or two days without risking medical deterioration and re-admission to the hospital.
The answer is: it depends. It depends on the surgeon…how confident they are with their pain control protocol, blood loss protocol, and technical ability. It also depends on the patient. Is the patient healthy? Do they have a good support system at home?

Sometimes patients with knee pain don’t have arthritis at all. Each knee has two rings of cartilage called “menisci” . The menisci work similarly to shock absorbers in a car.
Menisci may be torn acutely in a fall or as the result of other trauma or they may develop degenerative tears from wear-and-tear over many years. Patients with meniscus tears experience pain along the inside or outside of the knee. Sometimes the pain is worse with deep squatting or twisting. Popping and locking of the knee are also occasional symptoms of meniscus tears.

There’s a small risk that the ligaments, arteries or nerves will be damaged during surgery.
- Fewer than 1 in 100 patients have nerve damage and this usually improves gradually in time.
