Legal Issues With Taping

Heres the catch. The evidence suggests that the tape has some actual benefits, but there was also this pesky lawsuit against KT tape where they settled without admitting wrongdoing.

KT tape claimed all the same effects as the rest of them, with particular attention paid to reducing pain and preventing injury from a legal standpoint. Evidence seems to support short-term effects of proposed mechanisms but also that may be heavily influenced by the placebo effect.

Knowing they are wearing tape that is supposed to do SOMETHING may produce enough psychological benefit to create physiological changes. An example of this would be a runner with knee pain who cannot run without pain when not taped but with tape can finish a 5K.

Without any clear explanation for change in symptoms, were left to wonder whether the improved performance is a result of stimulation of mechanoreceptors, placebo, or simply thinking the tape is helping because a trusted medical provider told them it was.

Knee Wraps Are A Great Way To Manage Pain Holistically

Knee wraps are an excellent option for people who suffer from chronic knee pain. They can help you manage your knee pain by providing support and compression to your knees. If your knees have swelling, compression is said to help relieve the swelling.

Knee wraps are also very convenient for anyone with arthritis in their knees that causes stiffness and other uncomfortable symptoms.

What Are The Benefits Of Taping

Non

Taping is a rehabilitative treatment method frequently used by physiotherapists to help reduce knee pain and improve overall stability.

While the treatment methods suggested by the doctor should be sufficient to heal an injury, taping may also be used as an additional protective mechanism.

Some evidence suggests that taping can help to stabilize the muscles and ligaments of the knee, relieve knee pain, prevent hyperflexion of the joint, restore normal movement, and compress the soft tissues.

Taping is most frequently used by athletes or highly active individuals, as a means of protecting existing injuries and preventing future injuries.

In addition to these mechanical and neuromuscular benefits, taping can also have psychological effects, such as enhancing an athletes confidence or providing a greater sense of joint stability.

How To Reduce Swelling From A Knee Injury

If you have a knee injury, keep the swelling to a minimum. A compression bandage is frequently the best option when doing so. It is critical that the bandage be snug and provide adequate compression without impeding movement or blood flow. Compression bandages should be removed while sleeping. It is possible that if the swelling has decreased, the compression bandage needs to be adjusted.

Should You Use Kinesio Tape And Other Tapes

Ill admit, I use Kinesio Tape albeit sparingly. There are typically three situations that call for Kinesio Tape in my practice.

  • The patient has had previous success in the same or similar situation with tape. Who am I to mess with what works? If they come in and tell me that their shoulder pain was immediately improved by tape, Im probably going to tape them. Im also going to address their flexibility, mobility, and strength but theres no reason not to do those things with the tape on if its been helpful in the past.
  • Im stuck. If I have tried every other evidence-based approach I can think of, I have been known to try tape. Admittedly, this is mostly in shoulders with persistent pain that may benefit from postural cueing. Most recently I used it to remind a patient with a tight pec minor, to keep his shoulder blades down and back. Spoiler alert: He felt immediately better but ultimately it didnt work. In fairness, we were looking for a panacea in a tight post-operative shoulder and this wasnt it.
  • So if youre using it to enhance mechanoreception , for the placebo effect, or to see if you can get rid of persistent swelling, theres probably no harm in trying.

But if you tell me the pink tape is used to heat things up and the blue tape is to cool things down as a certain athletic trainer once told me, Im probably going to laugh out loud and move on.

How To Wrap Knee with ACE Brand Elastic Bandages

People who havent had knee problems havent experienced closely how vital knees are, especially when it comes to movement. On the other hand, those who have lived with knee pain know how a little problem with this crucial joint can go a long way. Even the slightest knee discomfort may ultimately make it hard for people to do something as simple as walk naturally.

Knees are one of the hardest working parts of your body. While you might credit your feet to do all the walking, without proper knee mobility, walking would be impossible. Knees are also vital during exercise. Your knees carry much of the workload when you do resistance training in the gym or do cardio exercises.

Knees are our unsung heroes. And while we make sure to rest our feet when we get tired, only very few of us take the time to allow our knees to rest and recover. At least not until we start noticing pain.

When you use compression wraps after a long day of activities, your knees can get the support they need. Wrap your knees so you can help provide them with adequate blood flow, improved recovery, and to help your knees avoid injury.

    To comfortably remove kinesiology tape:

    • Apply oil. Baby oil or olive oil can loosen the adhesive. Rub oil on the tape, wait 15 to 30 minutes, then remove it in the shower.
    • Remove it slowly. Avoid removing the tape too fast, which may irritate or damage your skin.
    • Roll away the tape. Roll the tape back on itself. Compared to pulling, rolling is less painful.
    • Move in the direction of hair growth. This minimizes irritation to your skin and hair follicles.
    • Tug the skin. While peeling the tape, use your other hand to tug the skin in the opposite direction. This is said to decrease discomfort.

Does Kinesio Tape Work For Knee Pain

Kurt et al. looked at the short-term effects of kinesio tape on joint position sense, isokinetic measurements, kinesiophobia, pain, and functional limitations in participants with patellofemoral pain, or runners knee.

Ninety participants were randomly allocated to tape and placebo groups before performing isokinetic quadriceps strength testing and joint position sense measures.

They also completed scales to measure pain and kinesiophobia . All measurements were repeated two days after tape application.

Although no differences were found in isokinetic muscle testing after two days, significant improvements were noted in kinesiophobia, pain, and functional limitations after taping. This suggests that taping has no effect on strength but may be useful for improving joint position sense and decreasing kinesiophobia, pain and symptoms.

A recent study in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy compared the effect of different taping techniques on anterior knee pain during functional activities.

After being taped, the female participants who all had unilateral knee pain prior to the study were asked to squat and climb stairs. Kinesio Tape was found to be an effective way to decrease knee pain in these patients while climbing stairs.

In older adults with knee osteoarthritis, the effect of kinesiotape on pain, swelling, and functional limitations was tested. The three groups of participants all performed exercise but two of the groups did so with tape applied.

How To Wrap Your Knee Using Tape

Two of the better-known methods are McConnel Taping and Kinesio Taping .

According to a study from the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, both MT and KT are effective ways to reduce anterior knee pain. This is the kind of pain you feel when you squat or use the stairs.

These two methods are commonly used because about 25% of adults experience some sort of knee discomfort. And, of course, you can do both of these at home.

How Can A Knee Brace Help

    KT Taping for Knee Pain

In general, knee braces decrease compressive forces on the knee by offloading and supporting the joint. This helps relieve pain and improve mobility to enhance recovery. Wearing a brace can help limit the stress placed on your meniscus while it heals and protect you from re-injury. As a result, you can be more physically active throughout your recovery and get back to doing what you love sooner.

After meniscus tear surgery, a knee brace can be worn to limit knee flexion and rotation, protecting the meniscus while allowing weight-bearing and movement . Additionally, braces can support the knee while doing physical therapy exercises later on in rehabilitation. .

Knee bracing can also be useful as part of a non-surgical approach for less severe acute tears and as an ongoing treatment for degenerative meniscus tears, especially in the presence of osteoarthritis . Keep in mind that wearing a knee brace is only one part of a potential non-surgical treatment strategy. Still, it can likely help to manage your pain while being physically active, with less risk of re-injury.

Using Kt Tape: Easy Steps To Follow

  • Peel off the paper backing and apply the kt tape around the circumference of your knee, starting at the bottom and working your way up.
  • Make sure to press firmly on the tape to ensure good contact with your skin.
  • When you reach the top, cut off any excess tape and secure it to the end with another piece of tape.

Does It Matter How You Apply Kinesio Tape To The Knee

According to the Kinesio tape manufacturers, the direction of pull and amount of tension are critical to taping the knee. The amount and direction of pull are hypothetically used to determine which muscles are being activated or inhibited.

Research disagrees. A study in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport examined the facilitatory and inhibitory effects of Kinesio tape during grip exercises. Participants were blindfolded while taped to either facilitate or inhibit wrist extensor muscle activity. They had their grip strength tested in the three conditions . Researchers failed to identify differences in maximal strength, EMG activity, or perceived performance among the tape conditions.

Another study in 2016 published in Isokinetics and Exercise Science also looked at the effect of tape on muscle performance. The tape was applied to the quadriceps with 40% tension before participants performed isokinetic exercise. The results showed no enhancement of muscle performance with the application of kinesio tape at any of the muscle velocities tested.

    How To Use Tubigrip Correctly

Get The Right Length: The key with using tubigrip to reduce knee swelling is to have a long enough piece. When using tubigrip for swollen knee treatment it should run at least from mid-thigh to mid-calf height and preferably from just below your hip to just above your ankle. It should also be worn double thickness.

So often I have seen people with a really small piece of tubigrip that only just covers the knee, and only a single layer. That is not going to do anything. The tubigrip needs to be long enough that the excess fluid is pushed away from the knee joint and back into general circulation, otherwise the fluid will just keep trying to get back into the knee. And wearing only a single layer will not provide enough compression to make much of a difference.

Choose The Right Size Tubigrip: Tubigrip is available in a range of sizes and it is important to get the right size for your knee too tight and it will quickly be very uncomfortable, too loose and it wont be effective. Check out our Tubigrip Size Guide to find the right one for you.

How Long Should You Wear Tubigrip: Tubigrip can be used for however long your knee swelling remains its effectiveness doesnt decreased with time. But you MUST take it off at night.

Top Tips: Check out the Tubigrip Compression Guide to find out everything you need to know about using tubigrip effectively for swollen knee treatment e.g. how to put tubigrip on, how to stop it rolling down and when not to wear tubigrip.
