So what is the meniscus? Its a piece of cartilage in your knee that cushions and stabilizes the joint. It protects the bones from wear and tear. But all it takes is a good twist of the knee to tear the meniscus. In some cases, a piece of the shredded cartilage breaks loose and catches in the knee joint, causing it to lock up.
Meniscus tears are common in contact sports like football as well as non-contact sports requiring jumping and cutting such as volleyball and soccer. They can happen when a person changes direction suddenly while running, and often occur at the same time as other knee injuries, like an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Meniscus tears are a special risk for older athletes since the meniscus weakens with age. More than 40% of people 65 or older have them.
Swelling Around The Knee
Swelling around the knee is another symptom that may not begin until the night of the injury or the next morning. This swelling occurs because your bodys immune system has received the signal that the area is injured. When the body responds, it sends extra blood, lymph, and cells to begin work on repairing the tear.
Along with the swelling, you may experience redness around your knee cap. You may also notice that the skin feels warmer than the rest of your leg. Again, these symptoms are part of your bodys immune response to try to fix the problem itself.
If you experience swelling, elevate your leg and apply ice. When you move around, you can wrap the knee with an elastic bandage.
However, do not wrap too tightly. If the swelling increases, the bandage could cut off circulation to the lower leg. After wrapping the leg, you should be able to insert your index finger without too much resistance.

What Are The Causes Of Knee Sprain Injuries
A knee sprain is a painful injury that can happen to anyone. Your ligaments stretch or tear the easiest when you suddenly pivot or turn your leg in an unnatural way. The ligament affected depends on the direction your leg is pulled. Knee sprains often happen during activities like sports, where direct force or a sudden movement occurs.
What Are Knee Injury Symptoms And Signs
Acute knee injuries can cause pain and swelling with difficulty bending the knee and weight-bearing. Acute knee injuries often may be considered as falling into two groups: those where there is almost immediate swelling in the joint associated with the inability to bend the knee and bear weight, and those in which there is discomfort and perhaps localized pain to one side of the knee, but with minimal swelling and minimal effects on walking.
If the swelling occurs immediately, it may suggest a ligament tear or fracture. If the swelling arises over a period of many hours, meniscal or cartilage injuries may be the cause. However, injuries to the knee may involve more than one structure and the symptoms may not present classically.
Longer-term symptoms that point to knee problems will include pain and swelling in addition to other complaints. Inflammation in the joint may be caused by even minor activity. Swelling may be intermittent, brought on by activity, and may gradually resolve as the inflammation decreases.
Pain, too, may come and go. It may not occur right away with activity but might be delayed as the inflammation develops. Pain can also be felt with specific activities. Pain with walking down stairs suggests patellar pain, where the kneecap is being forced onto the femur.

When Will I Feel Better After A Knee Ligament Injury
Your recovery time will depend on how bad the injury is. People also heal at different rates.
In most cases, physical therapy can help to limit problems and speed up your recovery. If you have an ACL tear, your doctor may recommend this after surgery.
While you recover, if your medical team agrees, you could take up a new activity that won’t hurt your knee. For instance, runners could try swimming.
Whatever you do, don’t rush things. You shouldnt go back to your old level of physical activity until:
- Your doctor says its OK for you to take part.
- You can fully bend and straighten the knee without pain.
- The knee doesnt hurt when you walk, jog, sprint, or jump.
- Its no longer swollen.
- The injured knee is as strong as the uninjured knee.
If you start to use your knee before it’s healed, you could cause permanent damage.

The RICE method is important for the first few days after surgery. Your knee will probably be a little swollen for a couple of days, but following the RICE steps will help with that. A knee meniscus tear is a common knee injury that occurs when you forcefully twist or rotate your knee. Imagine you are on the soccer field, you are heading in one direction towards the ball at full speed. Suddenly your teammate kicks the ball in the opposite direction and you quickly change your direction of movement. Your foot stays stuck in the ground whilst this change in direction occurs. This movement causes an enormous torsional load on the meniscus and leads to a compression and shearing of the discs, splitting this fragile cushion.
Similarly to this scenario, imagine yourself on the rugby field. You have to do a sudden side step. This sudden change in weight placement under all your weight combined with buckling of your knee to the inside leads to a medial meniscus tear.
Symptoms Of Torn Knee Cartilage
How do you know if you’ve sustained a cartilage tear?
You may experience acute symptoms like pain and buckling of the knee right after an injury, but not necessarily sometimes, cartilage damage can happen gradually over time, resulting in intermittent symptoms. Some people with meniscus tears have no pain and don’t even realize they have an injury.
However, even if you’re pain-free, you will likely note one or more of the following symptoms:
- pain or tenderness in the knee
- buckling or locking of the knee joint
- crunching or popping noises when walking
- dull pain under the kneecap when exercising
- difficulty bearing weight
- inability to bend or straighten the knee
- swelling or “water on the knee,” a buildup of fluid inside the knee joint

Recovery From Muscle Tears
Recovery from a minor strain or tear can be affected by observing the R.I.C.E. thats Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation treatment for injuries. Your orthopedist may also recommend NSAIDs non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help reduce swelling. A moderate muscle strain or tear can usually be treated similarly but for a longer period of a time. Normal activities can be resumed when a full range of motion returns without accompanying pain. Moderate tears may require physical therapy. A severe tear that requires surgical repair can take months or longer to heal. In this case, remember the adage: Do no H.A.R.M. Heat, Alcohol, Running, Massage all of which can do additional damage by causing more bleeding and swelling in a muscle tear and are therefore forbidden.

Over 70% of athletes with a swollen knee who felt a pop while running and pivoting will have an ACL tear or a patella dislocation. Patella dislocations are more common than you think. All of you dread an ACL tear. But most of you are surprised when we see you in the office and tell you that your kneecap dislocated. Most dislocated kneecaps will reduce spontaneously on the field. That means that the kneecap will go back into place on its own.
Patellar dislocations may hurt just as much as an ACL tear. Because patella dislocations are such a common sports injury we wrote this post to go into far more detail about them.
With any of the above issues, most of you will find it very difficult to walk without severe knee pain. Crutches, icing, and elevation are beneficial in these cases. These knee joint injuries need to be evaluated for an X-ray. Fractures are rare, but they do occur. Very few knee injuries will require a brace unless you want to use it for comfort. The most important reason for seeing a sports medicine physician after an injury that causes swelling is to look for these most common severe injuries.
Many of these severe knee joint injuries should be evaluated sooner rather than later. The initial treatment will be a reliable examination to arrive at a diagnosis, which will be followed with an MRI to confirm the diagnosis. Depending on what we think you injured, we may consider rest, physical therapy, or surgery.
Can You Walk With A Torn Acl
After a ligament tear, there will be immediate swelling, tenderness, and discomfort. Applying immediate first aid can help reduce the swelling. A healthcare provider can help with testing the stability of the knee and assessing the extent of the damage. With ACL tears, walking is possible but can be painful. The patient should be able to walk in a straight line but will be unable to make sudden turns or pivot. A knee brace can help stabilize the knee, but with ACL tears, surgery is almost always required.

Meniscus Tear Recovery Time
The expected recovery time for each knee injury will depend on the patient and the severity of the injury. After arthroscopic meniscus surgery, most individuals should expect the rehabilitation process to last roughly three months. With meniscectomies specifically, patients should anticipate a flexible recovery timetable of about one month. During this time, your doctor will prescribe a series of postsurgical knee exercises to help increase knee flexibility and also strengthen the surrounding tissues.
