The Three Most Common Knee Injuries

If you experience knee pain, its likely to be a result of one of these three common knee injuries:

  • Fractures and dislocations. You can fracture or dislocate any bone in your knee. Most knee fractures and dislocations are caused by a significant fall or a car accident. An abnormal knee structure or a hard knock can also cause dislocations.
  • Ligament tears. You can tear your anterior cruciate ligament , posterior cruciate ligament , medial cruciate ligament , or your collateral ligaments. ACL tears are the most common and are mostly caused by changing direction too quickly or landing awkwardly.
  • Meniscus tears. Sudden or awkward movements that involve twisting or pivoting can cause you to tear your meniscus.
  • Don’t Miss: Lock Knee Joint

    Kt Tape For Knee Stability

An unstable knee joint is one thats all too prone to accident and injury. Instability can lead to some painful situations, especially if you twist your knee in a direction its not really designed to go, which can result in bruised or even torn tendons and ligaments. Such injuries can be painful and very slow to heal, especially considering how much we use our knees every day just in mundane situations like walking around the home or office.

Providing your knee joint with the extra stability it needs to keep in its proper alignment helps reduce the chance of suffering from bruised and torn tendons and ligaments, even as you go about your day. The compression KT Tape provides pushes back against those twisting forces, keeping your joint in alignment meanwhile, the flexible nature of KT Tape means that your joint will still be able to move in ways that it needs to in order to function properly. As an overall result, taping your knee joint properly can help prevent injury from occurring in the first place.

How Do You Place Kinesiology Tape

Physical therapists like Guerrero are trained and certified in how to apply the tape, and the application pattern depends on exactly what youre trying to accomplish for your individual case.

Guerrero says Kinesio tape can be used to facilitate or to inhibit motion. For example, if someone has arthritis in their neck and is experiencing tension and headaches, we can tape the upper trapezius muscle in a pattern that is opposite the direction it usually contracts, she says.

The techniques may seem a bit complicated, but Guerrero says it is possible for your physical therapist or occupational therapist to instruct you how to put it on at home. You could connect with your therapist over video conference or a virtual therapy session to have them show you their preferred ways to apply it. Of course, if you cant easily reach the area, youll have to have someone else in your household be instructed.

If youre not in contact with your physical therapist right now but want to try kinesiology tape anyway, Dr. Lo says its OK to research online.

Although its best to get the advice of a professional for your situation, the tape is it is very forgiving, and by that I mean if you dont apply it perfectly, it usually can still help, Guerrero says. Kinesiology tape is available over the counter and pre-cut, which also makes it easier to apply.

How To Remove The Knee Tape After Running

After getting extra support from the tape during running, now its time to take it off. Knee tape can adhere properly, so you have to be careful while taking it off. It is vital to learn how to remove the knee tape after running without causing any discomfort.

Below we have mentioned some tips so that you can comfortably remove the Kinesio and other tapes:

    • Oiling: Apply oil directly on the tape. Baby oil or olive oil is the best to rub properly on the tape. Wait for around 10-20 minutes before removing to reduce the stickiness of the tape.
    • Remove the tape: After 20 minutes, remove the tape slowly to prevent damage to the skin.
    • Rolling: Rather than pulling the tape, roll it back because it is less painful.
    • Do not move opposite to the hair growth: Always move the tape in the direction of hair growth. It will reduce skin irritation.
    • Tighten the skin: Do not forget to tighten the skin while peeling the tape. To reduce the discomfort, tug the skin in the opposite direction.

Apart from this, you can also use lotion, ice, or take a warm shower to remove the tape without any discomfort. It can also loosen the stickiness of the tape.

Potentially, tape can help cue the body to remember things like, keep the knees out, or over the toes during various exercises.

Second, tape can increase stability. For those who find their knees lacking stability, then taping around the patella can assist with support. Below are a few of the landmarks well cover in our knee taping techniques.

Kinesiology Taping For Knee Pain And Stability

Kinesiology taping the knee is useful for the athlete whos lacking full joint stability and proper movement patterning. Will tape compensate for a serious knee injury? No, but for an athlete who has trouble with proper knee tracking, or knee knocking , then they may find use in one of the knee taping strategies below.

The knee tends to be a trouble area for a lot of athletes, and there are multiple reasons and methods to tape it. To assist us with two different taping techniques, we reached out to Joe Gambino, PT, DPT, and CSCS at Perfect Stride, New York City. When Do You Use Kinesiology Tape And When Shouldnt You Use It

For people with arthritis, kinesiology tape is used typically for painful, swollen, arthritic joints to provide pain control, Dr. Quirolgico says.

The tape can stay on for several days at a time when youre having pain, inflammation, a flare, or some other situation that you need to address. It is usually recommended to wear it three to five days, Guerrero says. Its kind of like you take your therapists hands home with you. During a session, I could massage you, but then youre going to go back into the world and probably get swollen again. But the tape keeps working on you and you get to keep receiving the effects.

There is also no known harm to wearing it preemptively, she says.

Sophie R. told us on Facebook, though, that if she leaves the tape on for more than 24 hours, she experiences stiffness, so you may need to see what works best for you.

When not to use kinesiology tape is really more about potential skin issues.

Do not apply Kinesio tape on fragile or broken skin, rashes, or if the patient has allergy to tape or adhesive, Dr. Quirolgico says.

The tape can be a bit hard to remove. I rub some lotion over top of the tape and let it soak in for about a half hour, Stef S. told us on Facebook. Depending on the contents of the lotion or oil, it may release the adhesive in more or less time.

How To Apply Tape: Full Knee Support

Kinesiology Taping for Knee Pain and Stability

Knee pain can be caused by any number of issues. The kneecap, or patella, could be moving incorrectly. One or more meniscus may be torn, ruptured, or inflamed. There may be arthritis, plica, chondromalacia, or any number of issues with the bones that constitute the knee. The beauty of this application is the breadth of conditions it covers with its relatively simple effects of balancing the muscles effect on the knee and relieving pressure on the kneecap and its tendon.

Knee issues arise from equally as many causes. Muscle imbaalances, poor running form, misaligned hips or poor posture, poor nutrition, overtraining, compensation for another injury, hyperextension, arthritis, and blunt trauma to ligaments are just a few of the most common causes of knee pain. Common effective treatments among all of these conditions include increasing circulation, providing support, reducing pressure, and maintaining range of motion.

KT Tape serves all of these purposes without the downsides of bracing or wrapping. Common injuries such as runners knee or patella tendonitis, jumpers knee, patella tracking, arthritis, meniscus tears, plica, patellofemoral pain, and general instability can all be best addressed by using the full knee support application*.

With this application you will get support, pain relief, and normal body mechanics without restricting motion or circulation like other treatments.

Other Methods To Manage Knee Pain

Taping should be only one part of an overall plan to manage your knee pain. Depending on the cause, your treatment plan may also include:

Weight loss. Being overweight puts a lot of stress on your joints. For every 1 pound of extra weight you carry, 2 to 4 pounds of extra pressure is placed on your knees. If you’re overweight, losing weight is the most important thing you can do for your knees.

Physical therapy. Exercise can help strengthen your knee and improve your range of motion. If you have arthritis, physical therapy may focus on strengthening your hips. When your hips are weak, your knees have to do more work. A physical therapist can also help you figure out whether you need braces or assistive devices.

Medicines. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help with flare-ups but can cause problems when you take them long-term. Topical NSAIDs in the form of creams or gels may be a good option.

Injection therapy.Corticosteroid shots to your knee can offer pain relief for some people. Hyaluronic acid injections may provide longer-lasting relief. Platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections are two other options, but they aren’t covered by insurance.

    The Benefits Of Taping

Knee Taping for Stability: Meniscus Tear, ACL Strain and Cartilage

Any kind of taping is meant to help limit motion, says Dr. King. If you have painful joints from arthritis, limiting motion can help to relieve some of the pain. However, we always want to balance immobilization with mobilization, he adds.

Totally immobilizing the joint can actually make it a bit stiffer. An argument for Kinesio tape is it can limit motion, but it also is stretchy enough that you get more motion than you would from traditional tape or from wearing a brace, says Dr. King.

All taping provides support, but with Kinesio tape, you get more dynamic support. Its not the stiff kind of feeling you get with traditional taping or a hard brace, says Dr. King.

It can also help to support muscles. The muscles around a joint with arthritis typically have to work harder. Kinesiology tape can allow those muscles to relax a little.
