Apply Heat And/or Cold Before Bed

Different temperatures can also help you ease knee pain at night.

Use cold if youre having pain after an injury, as it will help you reduce swelling. To apply it:

  • Lie on your back.
  • Place an ice pack above the kneecap, wrapping it around the knee to add some compression.
  • Remove the ice after 10 minutes.

Heat can help you relax the tissues. This is best for osteoarthritis patients.

To apply it, place the warm towel or heat pad on top of the kneecap. But, unlike using ice, dont add any compression as it could worsen the inflammation.

What Is The Treatment For Knee Pain

Treatments for knee pain are as varied as the conditions that can cause the pain.

Medications

Medications might be prescribed to treat an underlying medical condition or for pain relief.

If you are taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medications regularly for your knee pain, you should see your doctor be evaluated.

Physical therapy

Sometimes physical therapy sessions to strengthen the muscles around the knee will make it more stable and help guarantee the best mechanical movements. Working with a physical therapist can help avoid injuries or further worsening of an injury.

Injections

Injecting medications directly into your knee might help in certain situations. The two most common injections are corticosteroids and lubricants. Corticosteroid injections can help arthritis and other inflammations of the knee. They usually need to be repeated every few months. Lubricants that are similar to the fluid already in your knee joint can help with movement and pain.

Establish A Bedtime Routine

According to the Sleep Foundation, a bedtime routine is a group of activities done in the same order every night before going to bed.

This routine helps our brains recognize that those activities come before sleep. This makes it easy for us to fall asleep and rest.

The activities vary from person to person, but theyre usually relaxing. A warm bath, light stretching, reading, meditating, or journaling are a few good examples.

If you have joint pain, a good routine before bed would include activities that ease pain, such as:

  • A warm bath
  • 10 minutes of ice therapy on the painful joint to reduce inflammation. Or heat to increase the blood flow and relax the muscles.
  • 15-20 minutes of another relaxing activity you enjoy
  • Going to bed and waking up roughly at the same time

Try different activities and keep the ones you enjoy the most.

Sleep Therapy May Help Ease Knee Pain Troubles For Some

By Lisa Rapaport

4 Min Read

Patients with knee osteoarthritis and insomnia may be less troubled by joint pain after they get treatment to help them sleep better, a recent study suggests.

Knee osteoarthritis, a leading cause of pain and disability in older adults, occurs when flexible tissue at the ends of bones wears down. While it cant be cured, physical therapy or anti-inflammatory medications are often prescribed to relieve pain and improve mobility.

More than 70 percent of people with knee osteoarthritis also suffer from sleep disturbances, researchers note in the journal Pain.

For the current study, researchers randomly assigned 100 people with both insomnia and knee osteoarthritis to receive eight sessions of either cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia , designed to shift thinking about sleep and bad habits that contribute to insomnia, or behavior desensitization therapy designed to diminish emotional and physical responses to arousing thoughts and behaviors related to sleep.

Researchers assessed participants perceptions of pain before treatment and again three and six months after the interventions finished. The study team expected the CBT-I to achieve a greater reduction in whats known as pain catastrophizing, or feeling exaggerated levels of pain that are amplified by being emotionally upset about the pain. Instead, they found similar reductions in negative perceptions of pain with both the cognitive behavioral therapy and behavior desensitization.

Changing Your Mattress Or Bedding

A good mattress is essential for a good nights rest. However, if your mattress is not firm enough for your sleeping style, it may cause pain. The same goes if your mattress is old.

Consider investing in a new mattress for pain-free nights. You may also want to change your bedding if its inappropriate for the current season. For example, if youre using a thin blanket in the winter, it might help to use thicker blankets or multiple layers.

Knee pain becomes worse after a long stay, when you use a ladder, or stand up from a sitting position. Patients may also feel a tingling sensation as they straighten their knees.

Knee Osteoarthritis The two most common types of arthritis are arthrosis and sepsis. And osteoarthritis of the knee became the most common form of arthritis. In osteoarthritis of the knee, cartilage in the knee wears daily use and causes the bones to rub together. Symptoms include pain during sleep at night, swelling, and stiffness of the knee. Arthritis pain in the knee can be debilitating if not treated properly.

Gout Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis in which uric acid is concentrated in the blood. Uric acid forms strong crystals within the joint and causes symptoms of gout. Why Do I Have Shoulder Pain At Night Only

How to Fix Knee Pain for Good (AT HOME!)

While this nighttime shoulder pain cannot always be explained, a lot of the pain comes down to:

  • Being still at night
  • Unrelieved tension and stress from the day
  • The sleeping position you choose
  • Your mattress

During the day, the shoulder is being actively used while you are in a vertical position. The tendons engage and are pulled downward by gravity, which allows space to be made in the muscle groups in the shoulder. This additional space allows for an increase in blood flow and oxygen that alleviates the stiffness and pain that would be present otherwise.

When you lay down to rest or sleep at night, you are generally in a horizontal position. This removes the effect of gravity and allows the shoulder muscles to relax. The lack of movement and the relaxation of the muscles allows the fluids in your joints to settle and decreases the flow of blood, allowing the joint to become inflamed. People also tend to lie on their shoulder while sleeping, which can compress the joint even further, and thereby worsening the inflammation.

Avoid The Supine Bhc Position

The supine BHC position is more symmetrical than the DHF since you have positioned both hands on the chest while lying on your back. The difference in the activity between the scalene and upper trapezius muscles is lower. Still, this position of the arms causes some level of tightness of the upper trapezius, which can cause numbness and neck pain.
