Does Kinesio Tape Work For Knee Pain

Kurt et al. looked at the short-term effects of kinesio tape on joint position sense, isokinetic measurements, kinesiophobia, pain, and functional limitations in participants with patellofemoral pain, or runners knee.

Ninety participants were randomly allocated to tape and placebo groups before performing isokinetic quadriceps strength testing and joint position sense measures.

They also completed scales to measure pain and kinesiophobia . All measurements were repeated two days after tape application.

Although no differences were found in isokinetic muscle testing after two days, significant improvements were noted in kinesiophobia, pain, and functional limitations after taping. This suggests that taping has no effect on strength but may be useful for improving joint position sense and decreasing kinesiophobia, pain and symptoms.

A recent study in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy compared the effect of different taping techniques on anterior knee pain during functional activities.

After being taped, the female participants who all had unilateral knee pain prior to the study were asked to squat and climb stairs.

Kinesio Tape was found to be an effective way to decrease knee pain in these patients while climbing stairs.

In older adults with knee osteoarthritis, the effect of kinesiotape on pain, swelling, and functional limitations was tested. The three groups of participants all performed exercise but two of the groups did so with tape applied.

Preparing The Application Area

Once youve chosen the type of KT Tape you plan on using, its time to prepare the area of your skin that youll be applying this tape. In this case, well be preparing not just the knee itself but the skin above and below it to the length of several inches up the thigh and down the calf.

For the most part, preparation is going to be straightforward. You want to ensure that the skin on and surrounding your knee is as clean and dry as possible. This means removing any dirt as well as ensuring youre not using any sorts of oils or lotions on your skin either. Doing this prepares your skin for the best adhesion when it comes to keeping the tape in place without risking it slipping o coming off.

Part of this preparation involves setting enough time aside before whatever activity youre anticipating that will require knee support. While KT Tape can be applied in minutes, in order for your knee joint to receive the full benefit of the tape its strongly recommended to begin the preparation and application process around an hour in advance of any activity. Whether this is participating in a competitive sport or simply going about your day, youll get the best results from the tape if you do your prep work at least an hour beforehand.

Legal Issues With Taping

Heres the catch. The evidence suggests that the tape has some actual benefits, but there was also this pesky lawsuit against KT tape where they settled without admitting wrongdoing.

KT tape claimed all the same effects as the rest of them, with particular attention paid to reducing pain and preventing injury from a legal standpoint. Evidence seems to support short-term effects of proposed mechanisms but also that may be heavily influenced by the placebo effect.

Knowing they are wearing tape that is supposed to do SOMETHING may produce enough psychological benefit to create physiological changes. An example of this would be a runner with knee pain who can not run without pain when not taped but with tape can finish a 5K.

Without any clear explanation for change in symptoms, we are left to wonder whether the improved performance is a result of stimulation of mechanoreceptors, placebo, or simply thinking the tape is helping because a trusted medical provider told them it was.

How Kinesiology Tape Works

Kinesiology tape workswhen applied correctlyby lifting the skin from the tissues below it. Everyone has nerve receptors in their skin, as well as in the deep layers of the fascia, muscles, and other connective tissues, Wickham says. When tape is applied, it causes compression or decompression of these areas, supposedly allowing it to alter pain signals to the brain, he says.

Its the tapes elasticity that matters most. We can use more tension to turn on or excite a muscle, says Kellen Scantlebury, D.PT. and owner of Fit Club Physical Therapy and Sports Performance. For example: If someone gets surgery to repair their ACL, their quad will likely be weak. Taping the quad with maximum tension, he explains, brings those muscle fibers together, essentially causing a contraction . On the flip side, if someone has plantar fasciitis and is experiencing a lot of tightness in their calves, taping with limited tension can turn off the muscle so the person isnt receiving pain signals, he explains.

That said, it sounds like a miracle cure for running injuries, but you dont want to use kinesiology tape as a crutch. Its important to talk with your doctor about any injuries and before starting DIY-recovery methods.

Other Methods To Manage Knee Pain

Taping should be only one part of an overall plan to manage your knee pain. Depending on the cause, your treatment plan may also include:

Weight loss. Being overweight puts a lot of stress on your joints. For every 1 pound of extra weight you carry, 2 to 4 pounds of extra pressure is placed on your knees. If you’re overweight, losing weight is the most important thing you can do for your knees.

Physical therapy. Exercise can help strengthen your knee and improve your range of motion. If you have arthritis, physical therapy may focus on strengthening your hips. When your hips are weak, your knees have to do more work. A physical therapist can also help you figure out whether you need braces or assistive devices.

Medicines. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help with flare-ups but can cause problems when you take them long-term. Topical NSAIDs in the form of creams or gels may be a good option.

Injection therapy.Corticosteroid shots to your knee can offer pain relief for some people. Hyaluronic acid injections may provide longer-lasting relief. Platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections are two other options, but they aren’t covered by insurance.

With The Mcconnell Taping Technique

How to KT Tape for Chondromalacia Patella/Runners Knee/Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome | Dr K & Dr Wil

Like kinesiology taping, the McConnell technique is used to improve knee stability. Its designed to manage patella tracking disorder and pain by increasing structural support.

For this technique, youll need:

  • 2-inch wide adhesive gauze
  • 1 1/2-inch wide rigid non-elastic medical tape
  • scissors

Shop for gauze and sports tape online.

Always start with clean skin. To use the McConnell knee taping method:

  • Cut two strips of adhesive gauze and one strip of rigid tape. The strips should be long enough to cover your kneecap, about 3 to 5 inches.
  • Sit on a bench. Extend your knee and relax your quadriceps. Place both strips of adhesive gauze over your kneecap.
  • Secure the non-elastic tape on the outer edge of the kneecap. Pull the strip toward the inner knee. At the same time, push the soft tissue on the inner knee toward the kneecap.
  • Secure the end of the tape on the inner edge of the kneecap.
  • Typically, this tape can stay on the skin for 18 hours.

Depending on your sport and symptoms, the rigid tape may be applied in other directions. A physical therapist can help you determine the ideal option.

If you have knee pain, taping may help. The following techniques are designed to manage specific types of discomfort.

You’ll need a roll of 2-inch-wide adhesive gauze to protect your skin and a roll of 1 1/2-inch-wide rigid athletic tape.

  • Sit with your leg slightly bent and stretched out in front of you.
  • Cut 2 pieces of adhesive gauze and put them across your kneecap to protect your skin.
  • Start the strip of rigid tape in the middle of the kneecap and pull it over the kneecap toward the inner part of your knee.
  • Push the soft tissue on your inner knee toward the kneecap.
  • Secure the tape to the inner side of the kneecap.
  • Kinesio taping technique. This method used the more flexible elastic tape to support your knee while allowing a good range of motion. You’ll need two pre-cut Y strips and two pre-cut I strips. Rub the tape to activate the adhesive after you put on each strip.

  • Sit in a chair with your knee bent.
  • Put on the bottom part of the Y-shaped piece of tape starting at mid-thigh.
  • Slightly stretch one tail of the Y-shaped tape and around one side of the kneecap, coming back to the center below the kneecap.
  • Repeat with the other tail on the other side of your kneecap. The kneecap should be surrounded.
  • Take the other piece of Y-shaped tape and put on the bottom part, starting several inches below the kneecap.
  • Repeat with the other tail on the other side of your kneecap.

How Do You Remove Kinesio Tape

Tape removal can be tricky. Oftentimes, if the tape has been worn for five to seven days, it should peel off easily. Thus, you should still protect your skin from being ripped by the tape by holding the skin down as the tape is removed.

This will require an extra person if the tape is applied to the upper body, but around the knee you can simply use one hand to hold the skin down and the other to gently peel or roll the tape in the direction of hair growth .

If the tape is being stubborn, use an oil-based product to loosen the adhesive. Taking a hot shower or trying to remove the tape when your body is warmed-up is unlikely to work because most of the adhesive is made to be non-water soluble. This means its stickiness is enhanced when its wet!

Advantages Of Kt Tape Over Other Conventional Tapes

KT Tape has multiple advantages over other strapping tapes available in the medical market.

The main benefits of using KT Tape for knee pain include:

    • While usual strapping tapes are non-elastic, Kinesiology Tape for knee has unique elastic property. This property makes it apt for providing support and protection to muscles and joints.
    • KT Tape is applied over and around the knee area rather than tying it around the injured tissue tightly. KT Tapes ensure proper movement.
    • Other strapping tapes have a short span after which they become waste. However, you can use a single KT Tape over the knees for four to five days.
    • Kinesiology Tape is almost similar to skin. Its thickness and weight are the same as that of the epidermis. This property alleviates the uneasiness and irritation in the affected area which is otherwise predominant when we use regular strapping tapes on an injury.

Does It Matter How You Apply Kinesio Tape To The Knee

    Outer Knee Pain

According to the Kinesio tape manufacturers, the direction of pull and amount of tension are critical to taping the knee. The amount and direction of pull are hypothetically used to determine which muscles are being activated or inhibited.

Research disagrees. A study in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport examined the facilitatory and inhibitory effects of Kinesio tape during grip exercises. Participants were blindfolded while taped to either facilitate or inhibit wrist extensor muscle activity. They had their grip strength tested in the three conditions . Researchers failed to identify differences in maximal strength, EMG activity, or perceived performance among the tape conditions.

Another study in 2016 published in Isokinetics and Exercise Science also looked at the effect of tape on muscle performance. The tape was applied to the quadriceps with 40% tension before participants performed isokinetic exercise. The results showed no enhancement of muscle performance with the application of kinesio tape at any of the muscle velocities tested.

    How To Apply Knee Pre

Welcome to another SpiderTech instructional video. We’re going to look at the full knee spider today. So, remember, before you put any of the spiders on, you want to make sure the area is clean and dry, free of any hair, lotions and oils. We’re going to show how simple it is to apply it yourself and in any setting.

  • Bend all the black lines on the back of the tape and tear all the perforations before you start applying it to the skin.

  • Once you have torn all the perforations, you can create a tear in the middle of section number one to make it a little easier to put on. Fold the edges of the tear back a little bit.

  • You want to apply section number one in the centre of your knee, just below your knee cap.

  • Peel off the backing on either side of section number one, and let it lay on the skin.

  • Peel the backing off of section number two about three-fourths of the way. Fold it back to have a tab and stretch it, so it goes halfway up your thigh and just on the other side of the midline. Peel the rest of the backing off and allow the tape to adhere to the skin.

  • Rub the length of the tape once it’s on.

  • Repeat steps 5 and 6 on the other side.

  • Straighten the leg. Take the backing of section number three off and lay the tape on the skin without any stretch. Repeat on the other side.

  • Rub over both sections.

  • Take the remaining of the backing of number four off and rub all the corners to make sure the tape stays on.

  • Repeat steps 10 and 11 on the other side.
