The time it takes to fully recover from an MCL tear depends on how severe the tear is. A grade 1 MCL tear usually heals within one to three weeks. A grade 2 MCL tear generally takes four to six weeks to heal with treatment. A grade 3 MCL tear can take six weeks or more to heal with treatment. If you undergo surgery to fix your MCL tear, it could take longer.

Generally, surgery becomes an option if:
- Conservative treatment isnt enough, or
- Youre an athlete who wants to go back to your sport as fast as possible.
Those criteria also mean that surgery is mostly reserved for competitive athletes with grave injuries. An example would be PCL injuries as they tend to be severe.
Most times, the procedure is done by arthroscopic surgery. This is a minimally invasive technique that can reduce recovery times.
How Do I Treat A Torn Knee Ligament
A person can treat a torn knee ligament at home with rest, support and pain management. In some cases, however, a torn ligament is severe enough to require a visit to a doctor and maybe even surgery. The best way to treat a torn knee ligament also depends on which ligament is injured.
The knee’s four ligaments work together to restrict the movement of the shin and thigh bones. The cruciate ligaments work to restrict forward and backward movement while the collateral ligaments limit the movement of these bones from one side to the other. The two cruciate ligaments are located inside the knee joint while the collateral ligaments are on the outside.
If one of the collateral ligaments on the outside of the knee is injured, it may heal on its own. In most cases, these ligaments do not require special treatment. A person may use over-the-counter pain relievers to manage discomfort and rest the knee as much as possible, keeping it elevated above the patients heart level. For example, the injured party may rest the knee for a few days and reintroduce movement slowly and gradually. Using ice packs to reduce swelling and a compression bandage to support the knee may help.

How Is An Mcl Injury Treated
This depends on how badly the ligament has been damaged, and whether other ligaments are also affected. If you have only damaged the MCL, it is usually possible to treat it without surgery using a simple knee brace that holds the knee in a bent position for 4-6 weeks. However, if the tear is serious or other ligaments are affected, Adrian may advise you to have ligament surgery which can include direct repair with the internal brace technique or reconstruction of the ligament.
For acute injuries and when there is a multi-ligament injury Adrian recommends the Internal Brace repair technique using fibre tape. This stabilises the joint and can enable you to begin light exercise within a week of surgery.
Acl Injury Prevention Exercises
ACL injury prevention exercises focus on developing the same sorts of skills that ACL injury exercises do: Strength, flexibility, agility, stability, etc. Developing these requires focus and self-awareness in regards to using proper form, especially when it comes to jumping, stopping, and moving quickly in the heat of a game.
Concentrating on this during practice will help your body to move more correctly naturally so that you are less injury-prone when your mind is focused elsewhere during competition. The Hospital for Special Surgery recommends focusing on the following as you perform drills and repeating them as a mantra:
- Chest high and over knees
- Bend from the hips and knees
- Knees over toes
- Toes straightforward
- Land like a feather
It is important to work on building strength in your hips and thighs and especially the hamstrings for women. Warming up and stretching before engaging in strenuous activity is also important for ACL injury prevention.

Full Vs Partial Tears And Healing
Full ACL tears cannot heal on their own. These tears almost always need to be treated surgically, typically using a minimally invasive approach called arthroscopy. While a very few patients may restore some of their lost function without surgery, the knee will remain unstable, and that means the chances of reinjuring it are very high.
Even partial ACL tears may require surgery if the injury involves other ligaments, tendons, or your kneecap. In these cases, surgery can be used to fix multiple problems that could interfere with therapy or wind up causing significant problems later on.
Will You Need Surgery
Possibly yes, possibly no, depending on your injury and your doctors guidance. Most LCL and MCL ligament tears will not require surgery, as these are collateral ligament tears. Cruciate ligament tears to the ACL or PCL, however, may need reconstructive knee surgery that splices tendons from different parts of your body, or from a cadaver to replace completely torn or irreparably damaged ligaments.
A ligament reconstruction is a major surgery, and not everyone will want to undergo it . If you have knee pain or the injury has compromised your mobility, however, surgical intervention may be desired. Not getting a recommended surgery could lead to lifelong issues of instability and reinjury, so consider your treatment options with your doctor very carefully. Your recovery time will depend on your injury severity and the procedure you undergo.

When Will I Feel Better After A Knee Ligament Injury

- The knee doesnt hurt when you walk, jog, sprint, or jump.
- Its no longer swollen.
- The injured knee is as strong as the uninjured knee.
If you start to use your knee before it’s healed, you could cause permanent damage.
