A benchmark estimate youve probably seen online or read in your hospitals pamphlet is that youre likely to drive again between 6-8 weeks . Although it can be helpful to have a number in mind, not all patients will drive at the 6-8 week mark, and some patients will drive before. Older studies, like the 2003 study Brake Response Time After Total Knee Arthroplasty, suggested that 6 weeks was the minimum before operating a vehicle for most knee replacements.
Newer studies have found that due to recent advances in surgical technique, pain management, and rehabilitation right-sided total knee replacement patients may be ready to safely drive as early as 4 weeks post-op. This study looked at 29 patients having right TKA and measured the groups preoperative breaking and reaction times compared to post-op reaction times. The study found that all 29 patients passed the brake response test by 4 weeks after surgery. In addition, the study found that by 4 weeks after surgery, reaction times for breaking had surpassed the patients preoperative reaction times.
According to the study, Patients who had a contemporary TKA with less tissue disruption, a multimodal pain management protocol, and aggressive rehabilitation returned to their preoperative braking reaction time by 4 weeks after surgery.

Activities You Cannot Do After Full Recovery
You shouldn’t downhill ski or play contact sports such as football and soccer. In general, avoid sports that require jerking, twisting, pulling, or running. You should be able to do lower-impact activities, such as hiking, gardening, swimming, playing tennis, and golfing.
Other directions you will always need to follow include:
- Take small steps when you are turning. Try not to pivot on the leg that was operated on. Your toes should be pointing straight ahead.
- Do not jerk the leg that was operated on.
- Do not lift too much weight. This will place too much stress on your new knee. This includes grocery bags, laundry, garbage bags, tool boxes, and large pets.

If you are scheduled for a left knee replacement surgery, you may be able to drive again as soon as a couple of weeks after surgery. Especially if you have an automatic car or an electric vehicle.If your vehicle is not an automatic, youll probably need to wait longer your left leg wont be ready to operate the clutch for several more weeks. And even if you do drive an automatic, youll need to wait to drive until youre no longer taking opioid pain-relieving medication e.g. Oramorph or Codeine. Be sure to practice quickly changing the feet between the gas and brake pedals, slamming on the brakes , and getting in and out of the car. When can I drive? If you had surgery on your right knee, you should not drive for at least 4 weeks. After 4 weeks you may return to driving as soon as you feel comfortable. If you had surgery on your left knee, you may return to driving as soon as you feel comfortable if you have an automatic transmission.

One To Three Weeks After Surgery
The first few weeks after knee replacement surgery your physical therapist will focus on helping you reduce pain and feel more confident on your feet.
Youll start working on a daily routine of strengthening and flexibility exercises with your physical therapist. During this time, youll also work on bending your knees, getting up from a sitting position and walking.
Typically, youll be able to bend your knees at a 90 degree angle, fully straighten your knee, and walk for at least 10 consecutive minutes during this stage of physical therapy.
You can expect to use assistive devices like walkers, crutches or canes during this phase of recovery. But you may be able to progress past the use of a more supportive device to only needing a cane, or nothing, at the three- or four-week mark.
If you have a sedentary job, youll likely be able to return to work after a couple weeks beginning with half days and progressing from there. But ask your doctor if its safe for you to travel to work and sit with your knees bent for long periods of time before getting back to your normal work schedule.

When And How I Showered After Knee Replacement
On the 12th day post-surgery, my home physical therapist removed my staples and said that I could take a shower the next day. She advised me not to let the shower water directly hit my incision.
On her initial visit, she checked my bathrooms and shower to make sure I could maneuver in and out of each. She mentioned getting a non-slip pad so I wouldnt slip while getting into the shower or standing up.Many showers have non-slip grips so you might be prepared already. If you dont have one, its wise to take extra precautions on wet surfaces.
If you fall it could damage the wound and create more problems for you . If youre living on your own I recommend being extra careful when it comes to safety .
She liked that I had a built in tile bench in my shower and a showerhead that I can remove and use by hand. These were two big advantages for me.
My shower does not have built in handrails. Handrails would have helped a lot!
A handle can help you get in and out of the shower. It will also help with standing up. I didnt want to damage my tile in the shower so I didnt install a permanent handle, but I found another option that uses suction on the tile . They can easily be attached and released and wont damage the tile. Plus it looks nice.

Four To Six Weeks After Surgery
After about a month, your knee strength will improve. Plus, youll feel more comfortable as your knee pain and swelling decreases.
Depending on the type of knee replacement you had and how your recovery has been going, you may rely less or not at all on certain assistive devices.
During this phase of physical therapy, your physical therapist might introduce more low-impact activities like swimming, cycling or longer walks. The goal will be to improve your endurance so youre able to get back to typical daily activities.
At this phase, you will also work toward bending your knee to 120 degrees, begin climbing stairs and be able to return to light household activities and chores.

However, supervised therapyâwhich is best done in an outpatient physical therapy studioâis extremely helpful and those patients who are able to attend outpatient therapy are encouraged to do so.
For patients who are unable to attend outpatient physical therapy, home physical therapy is arranged.
