Knee replacement surgery involves replacing the damaged surface of the knee so as to relieve the person from pain and disability. In a knee replacement surgery, the surgeon removes the injured cartilage and bone from the surface of the knee and this is replaced with metal and plastic cushion. This surgery has been found to be largely successful and after the surgery, most people are capable of once again taking up all their routine activities like standing, sitting, walking, without any hassle. After some time, strenuous activities like cycling, swimming can also be carried out.

When it comes to squatting, however, a few issues may arise. After knee replacement surgery, you must ensure that you do not over-strain your knees. You can bend your knees about 100 to 125 degrees, with most current implant models. Thus activities like walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of vehicles, sitting and rising from chairs are all possible with these implants.

When it comes to squatting or even kneeling, after having knee replacement surgery done, this may not be possible with these implant models. You will need to get a high flexion knee joint implanted. Do Not Apply Lotion Cocoa Butter Or Essential Oils To Your New Incision Right Away

You need to keep your incision clean and dry in order to avoid the risk of infection. Putting essential oils or lotion directly on an incision that is not fully closed is just a bad idea. Once the skin is healed, your physician may approve the use of lotions or oils. If the skin around your incision becomes increasingly swollen, red, warm, and constantly drains, you may have an infection and you should contact your physicians office immediately.

Preparation For Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Patients undergoing total knee replacement surgery usually will undergo a pre-operative surgical risk assessment. When necessary, further evaluation will be performed by an internal medicine physician who specializes in pre-operative evaluation and risk-factor modification. Some patients will also be evaluated by an anesthesiologist in advance of the surgery.

Routine blood tests are performed on all pre-operative patients. Chest X-rays and electrocardiograms are obtained in patients who meet certain age and health criteria as well.

Surgeons will often spend time with the patient in advance of the surgery, making certain that all the patient’s questions and concerns, as well as those of the family, are answered.

  • There was no change in kneeling ability for the whole study group from pre- to post-operatively. .
  • Patient reasons for not kneeling varied. However, the average test scoring for pain and function for all kneeling abilities lay within the nociceptive rather than neuropathic range.

Surgery for Osteoarthritis Helps Patients Regain Mobility, Shed Pounds

July 30, 2010 — Osteoarthritis patients who were obese lost weight after undergoing total knee or hip replacement surgery, according to a recent study published in Orthopedics.

Among a study group of 196 patients, researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine found that nearly 20% lost at least 5% or more of their body weight and experienced a significant decrease in body mass index — a measurement of height and weight — after undergoing total joint replacement, or arthroplasty. BMI decreases were greater among knee replacement patients than hip replacement patients , researchers reported.

Overall, the mean weight of the group dropped from 175 pounds to 172 pounds after surgery. The authors took into account natural weight gain that typically occurs with aging. Patients who had a BMI higher than 30, which indicates obesity, were most likely to experience the greater weight loss after surgery.

The findings suggest total joint replacement may help with weight loss and weight management for overweight patients with osteoarthritis because replacing damaged bone with prosthetics increases patientsâ mobility and reduces the pain and disability that accompanies osteoarthritis.

Try to take your pain medication as soon as you begin to feel pain. Don’t wait until the pain becomes severe. Follow the instructions on the prescription label. Remember to take your pain medication before activity and bedtime.

If you need to have stitches or staples removed and you’re still taking pain medications, be sure to have a friend or family member drive you to your appointment.

Pain medication may cause nausea. If this happens, decrease the amount you are taking or stop and contact your surgeons office.

If you need additional pain medication, please contact your surgeons office. Give at least a few days advance notice before you run out of the medication. Please plan ahead, especially for holiday weekends.

  • You aren’t permitted to drive a car while taking narcotic pain medication.
  • It may take several days to have a bowel movement. Anesthesia and pain medication often cause constipation. Drink plenty of fluids and eat whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. A stool softener or laxative can help bowel function return to normal.
  • Don’t hesitate to call your surgeons office with any questions or concerns.

Feel free to use my progress report for information but understand that our health, strength, and mobility before and after surgery will all be at different levels. Like my doctor told me, the healing process takes over a year.

Eleven weeks ago I was spending the majority of my time in a recliner. I was doing physical therapy even though it was painful. Time dragged by slowly.

The 3rd month has gone by quickly and Ive returned to activities that I used to take for granted. Im back to doing routine chores around the house, Im driving, and once again active in recreational and social activities.

Physical therapy remains a big part of my life. The more I work at my therapy the stronger my knee and leg become. Ive made enormous strides by sticking to a regular schedule of exercise and Ive realized that movement, however painful, is extremely important for the knee joint.

In this article, Ill share whats working and what Ive been able to accomplish this month. Time is a good healer itself, but hard work and quality physical therapy have made a huge difference in my recovery.

The Benefits Of Exercising After A Joint Replacement

Ultimately we all recommend continued exercise after a joint replacement. Studies focused on moderate sports and weightlifting indicate that it is probably safe to do. Additionally, the newest technology has dramatically reduced the concerns we once had about exercising after a hip or knee replacement. And the benefits to your overall health from exercise are just too good to pass up.

We recommend waiting 3-6 months before returning to the gym. Thats the minimum time to let your body grow into the implants. But it can take TWO YEARS for your body to finish healing. So be patient, dont rush it, and you will be rewarded with a sturdy, pain-free, and durable joint.

Keep the weight moderate, dont try to go back to powerlifting. Remember to scale and accommodate as needed. Use padding to cushion yourself and stay in control while exercising. Avoid forcing the range of motion, or you could end up with a dislocation.

Ultimately we cant tell you how to live your life but just be reasonable when choosing your sporting activities. And remember moderation is the key!

Joints Are Replaced To Keep You Active

First off, exercise is good for you at all ages. If you dont exercise after your joint replacement, youll have a higher risk of heart disease and osteoporosis. Says Dr. Steele. He expects his patients to be active, even playing sports and exercising.

But what about the risks? Dr. Steele says If you lie in bed for the rest of your life, your implant will not wear away. On the other hand, if you run a marathon every weekend, it will wear out fairly quickly. All other activities in between are somewhat unknown with regards to wear rates.

Running After A Knee Replacement

I do caution my patients about running though. We know that studies have shown long distance running too rough on a knee replacement. But I have no problem with people working back to WODs with short 200 or 400 meter runs, as tolerated.

Dr. Geringer usually tells people to let pain be their guide. If it feels comfortable, go ahead and do it. If patients have pain while running, I usually encourage rowing or biking as an alternative. Walking and hiking are also perfectly fine.

And who knows? Maybe the advances in plastics will one day prove to allow knee replacement patients to get back to running long distance as well!

Getting Into And Riding In A Car

When getting into a car:

  • Get into the car from street level, not from a curb or doorstep. Have the front seat moved back as far as possible.
  • Car seats shouldn’t be too low. Sit on a pillow if you need to. Before you get into a car, make sure you can slide easily on the seat material.
  • Turn around so the back of your knee is touching the seat and sit down. As you turn, have someone help lift your legs into the car.

When riding in a car:

  • Break up long car rides. Stop, get out, and walk around every 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Do some of the simple exercises, like ankle pumps, while riding in the car. This helps reduce the risks of blood clots.
  • Take pain medicines before your first ride home.

When getting out of the car:

  • Turn your body as someone helps you lift your legs out of the car.
  • Scoot and lean forward.
  • Standing on both legs, use your crutches or walker to help you stand up.

Ask your health care provider when you can drive. You may need to wait up to 4 weeks after surgery. DO NOT drive until your provider says it is OK.

I Dont Kneel Because I Do Not Want To Damage The Hardware

In their study of 404 patients who had knee replacement and difficulty kneeling the researchers found:

  • Sixty percent of patients were unable to kneel after total knee replacement

  • People who had kneeling difficulties had:
  • Too much weight or a high body mass index.
  • It was too painful to kneel
  • They did not have physical inability
  • Fear of damaging the prosthesis. .
