How Much Will A Knee Replacement Cost In Australia As A Public Patient
The total cost to get a knee replacement depends on the procedure required. The Medicare Benefits Schedule lists several knee replacement procedures for which it will provide a benefit of 75% of the fee listed if you are a public patient. For example, the total replacement arthroplasty of knee including patellar resurfacing and/or revision of patello-femoral joint replacement to total knee replacement is listed as $1,371.25, with the MBS covering $1,028.45, leaving the patient $342.80 out of pocket.
While Medicare will generally cover 75% of the cost of your knee replacement procedure, its worth considering that opting to have the procedure done through the public system may involve a significant wait. Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showed that in the 2019-20 period, more than half of public patients waiting for a total knee replacement waited for 223 days with just under 10% waiting for more than a year.
Having a knee replacement done through the private system could potentially involve a shorter wait but on the flip side you may incur greater out-of-pocket costs.

Stay Connected With Your Surgeon
Lajam asks her patients to come in for an x-ray, or at least call and check in, every year or two for life. Mechanical pieces can fail, or you could trip or fall and knock something loose and damage it and make it wear faster, she said.
If your implant gets worn or damaged, you can consider a revision knee replacement surgery. Whats a revision knee replacement surgery? Its a procedure to replace some or all of the artificial joint if it becomes damaged or worn. Surgeons can replace just the plastic piece if thats whats needed, or the entire implant if the damage is more severe.
The Knee Replacement Surgery Recovery Timeline
Lajam tells her patients that for the first two weeks they wont like her very much, then they start getting motion back, getting around and seeing the pain dissipate. The first two weeks is the toughest part, then it starts getting better, she said. Severe pain after knee replacement surgery can be managed with medication.
Physical therapy can help you recover after knee replacement surgery. It improves your range of motion, reduces swelling and helps you learn to walk again.
Bending ones knee on ones own is difficult its helpful to have someone help you, Lajam said. She said her patients typically have in-home physical therapy a couple of times a week, with instructions on exercises after knee replacement surgery to do on their own. And after the first few weeks, most people switch to outpatient physical therapy.
Lajam says that your body tends to recover around the three-month mark. But your knee will continue to heal for more than a year after surgery.

Knee Replacement Range Of Motion: Post Surgery
Not only do people have different ROM potentials, to begin with, people also heal at different rates. With that in mind, here is the Knee Replacement Range of Motion, based on studies of some total knee replacement patients.
Stage 1 65-90° flexion. This amount of flexion allows for walking without any assistance, standing, and some stair climbing . Before you leave the hospital, your doctor will be looking for flexion as close to 90°.
Stage 2 115° flexion. At this point, you should have made noticeable improvements from your early recovery days. This means moving around normally, bending to the ground, sitting down, and even tying shoelaces!
Stage 3 A goal to hit 115°- 120 Degree Knee Flexionor greater should be the aim. The timeframe for this varies but should be consistently working towards. A flexion of 125° is great and 135° is excellent .
Throughout each stage of the Knee Range of Motion Chart, its important that you keep working on your surgical knee and artificial knee prosthesis. The first 3 months of your recovery are critical for working out your new knee to gain back flexibility and movement.
If you stay idle, inconsistent, or not fully committed to gaining back range of motion, your knee may become stiff. If your knee becomes stiff, you risk the need for revision surgery and a joint that will cause lifelong issues.

Reasons For The Procedure
Knee replacement surgery is a treatment for pain and disability in theknee. The most common condition that results in the need for kneereplacement surgery is osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage.Damage to the cartilage and bones limits movement and may cause pain.People with severe degenerative joint disease may be unable to donormal activities that involve bending at the knee, such as walking orclimbing stairs, because they are painful. The knee may swell or”give-way” because the joint is not stable.
Other forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and arthritis thatresults from a knee injury, may also lead to degeneration of the kneejoint. In addition, fractures, torn cartilage, and/or torn ligaments maylead to irreversible damage to the knee joint.
If medical treatments are not satisfactory, knee replacement surgery may bean effective treatment. Some medical treatments for degenerative jointdisease may include, but are not limited to, the following:
-
Anti-inflammatory medications
-
Cortisone injections into the knee joint
-
Viscosupplementation injections
-
Weight loss

The Cost Of Hip & Knee Replacement
Patients often have questions surrounding the cost of a joint replacement procedure, whether they have insurance or are paying entirely out-of-pocket. This is not surprising, as those costs can vary drastically depending on the surgeon and the facility they use. Often, patients dont know the cost upfront until they get the bill.
Dr. Andrew Wickline is one of the few surgeons offering upfront pricing for hip and knee replacements for patients who wish to pay for surgery out of pocket, with or without the use of insurance. Here he answers some common questions on why surgery costs vary so much, how he is able to offer upfront pricing, and how patients can benefit from self-pay hip and knee replacement.
How Much Is A Knee Replacement Without Insurance
Typical costs: For patients without health insurance, a total knee replacement can cost $35,000 or more. However, some medical facilities offer uninsured discounts. At the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, an uninsured patient would pay a discounted price between $29,335 and $34,050.

What Should I Consider In Knee Surgery Cost After I Am Discharged From The Hospital
You may be sent home with prescription medications to manage pain, and reduce the risk of blood clots or infection. You will probably have one or more follow-up appointments with your surgeon. You may also need physical therapy or other rehabilitation services for a few weeks after the procedure.
Although there is generally no coverage under Original Medicare for prescription medications you take at home, Part B typically pays 80% of allowable charges for all medically necessary doctor visits and physical or occupational therapy services you need after your surgery. Part B usually also generally covers durable medical equipment such as a cane or walker if your doctor orders one for you to use during your recovery. Its a good idea to discuss your after-surgery care with your doctor so you know what to expect and can better plan for your out-of-pocket expenses.
In some cases, your doctor may recommend a brief stay in a skilled nursing facility after your knee replacement. In order to be eligible for Part A skilled nursing facility coverage, you must have a qualifying hospital stay of at least three days prior to your admission. If your stay is covered, you pay nothing for the first 20 days of skilled nursing facility care there is a daily coinsurance amount applied to days 21 and beyond.

What Is Knock Knees
Also known as genu valgum, knock knees is a condition where your knees turn inward while your ankles stay separated.
This condition is normal among young children who are under the age of 6.
However, if the child is older than the age of 7 and their genu valgum is persistent or worsening it is most likely due to one or more underlying condition.
Certain underlying conditions can also cause knock knees to develop later on in a persons life like when they reach adulthood.
In most cases, once the underlying problem is treated knock knee correction will be achieved.
