Exercise : Knee Stretch
Our Midi Foam Roller and Stretching Straphave been designed to help you get the most out of this stretch. If you dont have either, yoga blocks or books and a towel will do the trick.
- Lie on your stomach and place your affected knee on the midi foam roller.
- Bend the affected leg back so you can put the stretching strap around your foot.
- Press your groin into the floor and slowly pull the strap towards your buttocks. Youll feel a stretch along your thigh and at your knee.
- Intensify the stretch until you reach between 8 and 9 on your personal pain scale.
- Hold for 2 to 2.5 minutes.
- Slowly release your leg from the stretch and repeat on the other side.
If you find that your foot reaches your buttocks easily, continue pulling it back with your hands.
Avoid this common mistake: Do not raise your hips while you pull your foot back keep pressing them into the floor. If you raise your hips, you wont stretch the intended area.
Can I Prevent Joint Popping
If you want to stop your joints from popping, theres only one solution: get up and get moving. Motion is lotion, as the saying goes. Stretching and movement should prevent muscle tightness and keep your joints lubricated, thus preventing them from rubbing together. Avoiding joint popping shouldnt be your only reason for doing this, though. While joint problem is normally fine, other injuries caused by a lack of stretching arent.

Knee cracking happens when you use your knees full range of motion. Activities that involve bending and straightening your knees like standing after sitting, rising from kneeling or squatting can all cause popping, clicking, crunching, or grating. In most cases, knee cracking is similar to cracking your knuckles its a sound and a mild sensation that isnt a problem. If you experience knee pain or swelling around your knees after the popping occurs, you should see a doctor or consult an orthopaedic surgeon for a diagnosis or treatment. There are some schools of thought that believe cracking knees is an indication of arthritis however, there is currently no research to support this claim.

What Can Cause The Knees To Pop
Gas Bubbles as a Cause For Knee Popping: The most common cause of Knee Popping which is not accompanied by any pain is due to bubbles of gas which tend to build up inside the joint and then burst. It can also be caused due to ligaments or tendons which snap above the joint. Here it is important to understand how gas bubbles are actually formed inside the joint. The gas bubbles are usually formed due to changes in pressure in the knee joint due to normal everyday use. When these bubbles burst or break then it causes the one to pop. In medical terms this phenomenon is called as cavitation. This is very normal for an individual and does not pose any threat to the joint. Likewise, with normal motion of the joints, a tendon or a ligament may stretch more than normal slightly and may snap producing a popping sound. This also does not pose any threat to the joint itself and is a common condition.

Causes Of Crepitus Or Joint Sounds
Often, crepitus is harmless. It happens when air seeps into the soft tissues around the joint . When you bend the joint, the air bubbles burst, and you hear a cracking sound.
While most crepitus is harmless, some forms of crepitus signal a problem. If the popping or crunching sound comes with pain, you should see a doctor to evaluate the cause.
Causes of painful joint popping may include:
- Osteoarthritis: Arthritis is a condition in which cartilage begins to rub away, leaving bones unprotected and creating inflammation. When bones rub and grind, it causes pain and stiffness that usually gets worse with activity. Read more about arthritis.
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome : Also known as runners knee, PFS causes crepitus along with pain behind the kneecap . Understand Your Clicking Knee
It can be unnerving to hear a clicking sound in the knee. In particular, doctors often hear complaints from patients who have noticed their knees clicking when walking or when walking up stairs. Most often, knee clicking is not a cause for concern.
- Other benign reasons for knee clicking include the rolling of tendons, ligaments, or other connective tissue across each other with certain motions. In the knee, this is most common with a deep knee bend.
However, there can be more serious underlying causes of knee clicking, particularly if it is associated with pain or swelling.

How To Stop The Cracking Sound From Knee
There are a few exercises which can be done to get rid of Knee Cracking. These exercises are:
Calf Release Exercise to Get Rid of Cracking Knee: This exercise helps to relieve muscle tension with direct pressure. Simple stretching just stretches or elongates the muscle but muscle release technique actually activates the tight muscles and makes them more balanced resulting in getting rid of Knee Cracking.
To do this exercise, sit with the affected calf on top of a tennis ball. Pull the other leg on top of it and roll yourself up and down over the ball. Once you identify a tender spot then stop rolling and move the foot up and down for about half a minute. This exercise need to be done at least three times a day to get rid of Knee Cracking.
Hip Flexor Release to Get Rid of Cracking Knee: Majority of knee conditions and noises that are heard from knee including Knee Cracking are due to some abnormality of the hip. In case of Knee Cracking, this can be addressed by a Hip Flexor Release Exercise.
To do this exercise, take two tennis balls and tape them together. Now, lie on the stomach and place the taped balls beneath the stomach. Now bend the leg such that it is perpendicular to your body and swing the leg sideways from left to right such that a strain is felt on the knee. Swing the leg as much as you can tolerate.
Repeat this for the other leg. Do this at least two to three times a day in reps of three to get rid of Knee Cracking.
Joint Popping Symptoms & Treatment
In orthopedic medicine and sports medicine, crepitus describes a popping, clicking or crackling sound in a joint. Joint popping sounds may mean that air is moving in the joint, which is usually harmless.
People most often notice crepitus in their knees, but it can also happen in other joints like the shoulder, elbow or neck.

How To Avoid Creaky Joints
One way to avoid creaking joints is to get up and move as much as you can during the day, Dr. Stearns says.
We say motion is lotion the more you move, the more your body lubricates itself, Dr. Stearns says. When youve been sitting or lying around, fluid in the joints doesnt move. The more active you are, the more your joints lubricate themselves.
Is There Any Treatment For It
Some will perceive fewer knee noises after losing some weight, or after starting an exercise regime.
In healthcare, we usually treat the noises when theres joint pain or an injury involved.
For example, if the noise is due to a ligament tear, we treat the tear. Once its managed, the crack or pop should disappear.

What Exactly Is Joint Popping

While you never want your bones to be rubbing together, the popping sound signifies that there is more than enough cartilage for you to be okay. Joints can make other sounds, as well, such as creaking. Creaking will come and go dependent on the use of a joint, sleeping position, and several other factors. Many people ask about joint popping and creaking in fear that it might be an issue, but joints making noise is essentially a fact of life.
You may also notice joint popping when youre working out, or using a joint repetitively for other reasons. This is also common, and typically harmless. When this type of popping occurs, it is because the muscles you are using is tight. Tightness of a muscle can cause friction on the bone, leading to noise being made. This isnt a problem in and of itself, but it does imply that you should do some stretching. About Cracking Sound From Knees:
It is quite common for everyone to hear a cracking sound whenever there is any movement in their knees, especially after getting up from a seated position for a prolonged period of time like in an airplane, going up and down stairs, walking for long distance. All these things cause the knee joint to become stiff and tight. When you hear the knee crack it gives a feeling of relaxation and pleasure and makes the knee a bit more flexible.
There are two questions that come to mind when the knees crack. The first question is why does this happen and the second question is whether it may cause some harm or injury to the knee joint. The answer to the first question has been delineated in detail below and the answer to the second question is that when there is Knee Cracking it is not the bones that are actually cracking as then it would lead to intense pain and you will not be able to move your knee. Thus, generally Knee Cracking do not cause any injury nor does it predispose you to any medical conditions, except when you already have a known diagnosis of a degenerating knee joint.
Treatment For Knee Popping
Knee Popping is a common condition and does not pose any threat to the knee and there is no need for any treatment for Knee Popping alone, although the condition causing the knee popping like an injury or a tear of the ligament and conditions like arthritis or chondromalacia patella needs treatment for which you need to consult with your treating physician. Citing an example if arthritis is causing Knee Popping then the physician will prescribe medications for pain relief like antiinflammatories. The physician may also recommend application of ice alternating with heat for 15 to 20 minutes two to three times a day. A knee brace may also be recommended for immobilization and allowing the inflammation or injury to heal. The physician may also recommend you to a physical therapist to formulate an exercise regimen to increase the strength and stability of the knees and promote range of motion.
Glucosamine along with chondroitin is a known effective treatment for arthritis. Apart from this using fish oil and omega 3 fatty acids have also shown to be effective in treating arthritis.
