However, you should still engage in some movement to prevent your muscles from stiffening.
In the next phase, get an ice pack to treat the pain, swelling, and inflammation around your knees. If you dont have an ice pack, wrap some ice cubes in a clean cloth instead. Apply the ice on the pain point a few times each day for 10 to 15 minutes. Avoid placing the ice directly onto the skin because this can worsen the knee pain.
For compression, you should reduce discomfort with knee support or a bandage. Hold the leg firmly but not too tight. Elevation also lessens the knee swelling. Raise the leg above the heart level to boost blood circulation.
Food For Knee Pain And Swelling
Your lifestyle choices affect the quality of your health. Most times, you experience knee pain and swelling when the joints get inflamed. Beyond medication and exercising, eating some foods can increase the pain. Avoid foods that cause knee pain like sugar, gluten, and saturated fats in your diet.

In addition, compresses should not be used in combination with topical medications, as there is a risk of injuring the skin and/or altering the medications effectiveness. Special caution should be exercised in the setting of diabetes or other conditions that may cause decreased skin sensitivity.

Exercises For Knee Pain And Swelling
Although rest is essential for your recovery, too much inactivity can stiffen the muscles and increase your discomfort. After trying the RICE method, physiotherapists recommend getting some movement to alleviate the pain. Mild physiotherapy exercises can improve knee mobility and soothe joint pain. Activities like slow walking, swimming, and tai chi will also build strong leg muscles.

Relieving Everyday Knee Pain: Get Moving
If you dont fall into one of these emergency categories, heres what to do:
Temporarily lay off your normal exercise routine and/or other activities that worsen the pain. That does NOT mean youll need to stop moving. In fact, many orthopedic doctors and physical therapists, including Dr. Gabe Mirkin, the sports-medicine physician who first proposed it in the late 1970s, have backed off the protocol known as RICErest, ice, compression, and elevation. New research also discourages routine use of braces and casts, which limit a joints range of motion and slow its healing.

Mirkin now says, Anything that reduces inflammation also delays healing.

Ive had my share of knee anguish. As I write this, Im a few days away from surgery for my second knee replacement.
My first brush with knee problems was 20 years ago, when I headed into an orthopedic office to check on my ankle pain that wouldnt go away and was getting worse. Without even an examination, the doctor said, Oh thats knee arthritis, which an x-ray soon confirmed.
At the time, I was training for and competing in triathlons, running and biking long distances, swimming several times a week, lifting heavy weights. His recommendation: Youll just have to alter your exercise routine, including no more running. Devastating. It felt like a death sentence.
I returned a few months later to the knee guy in that practice, Dr. Stephen Fox. He told me that running didnt cause my arthritis and wouldnt hasten the joint destruction. He encouraged me to stay active, though warning me to quit the heavy weight training, Run a couple of miles. If it hurts worse the next morning, run slower and less distance the next time. Keep up with your normal biking, swimming, gardening, etc. Come see me about a joint replacement when the pain begins to interfere severely with your quality of life.
So I did, and Ive since had successful right knee and left hip replacements with Dr. Fox as my surgeon. I keep doing whatever I can. If you have chronic knee pain, visit a rheumatologist to help with a diagnosis, and try to find an orthopedic doctor like Dr. Fox.
