One very popular myth about showering after knee replacement surgery is the belief that you need to avoid taking a bath for the short-term after replacement surgery. For decades, patients who underwent knee replacement surgery were under the impression that they could not submerge the healing area for at least 14 days or at least until after the skin staples were removed to avoid accidental loss of sutures.

For most patients, this rule was unpleasant. The majority of patients want to go home, bathe and get rid of all the tape marks, and feel clean. Well, now a study shows that this time-honored advice is unnecessary in most patients.

Researchers at Loyola School of medicine recently conducted a study about showering after knee replacement surgery. This study was done by comparing the bacterial skin counts of patients who shower 48 hours after knee arthroplasty to patients who waited between 10-14 days.

Once researchers swabbed the skin near the incision of the patients who had just bathed. They analyzed microscopic skin cells to see if there was a difference in the bacterial count in the patients who had showered 48-hours after surgery versus the patients who delayed bathing for 10-14 days. Upon reviewing the data, they found there was no patient in either group developed any signs of infection and, therefore, that there was no reason to wait two-weeks before showering after knee replacement surgery.

Reduced Need For Surgery

One 2014 study suggests that the zero-gravity nature of inversion can reduce compression. The authors of the study also noted that inversion may potentially prevent disability from back problems. This could also reduce the need for spinal surgery.

A 2012 study from Disability and Rehabilitation found that people with lumbar disease reduced their need for surgery six weeks after using inversion therapy.

Do Not Ditch The Walker Or Cane Too Soon

It may be tempting to get rid of the walker so that you can use a cane instead. But it is important to use a walker until you can comfortably walk with a cane after knee surgery because you want to avoid increased pain or strain to your knees, hips, and back. If you still have any sort of limp, lean, or pain in your knee or hip, you must continue to use an assistive device like a walker or cane until you correct these movement patterns.

Resuming Household Chores After The Surgery

It is possible to resume your household chores like cleaning, cooking, and other daily tasks as soon as you start feeling comfortable about being on your feet and moving around the house comfortably. It is best to wait a couple of weeks before you can put aside your cane or crutches completely and resume most of the daily chores.

However, it may take a couple of months before you can kneel without feeling pain. In the meantime, you can consider using a pad or sometime of cushion to protect your knees if you are kneeling.

What Should I Avoid After Knee Replacement

It goes without saying that high-impact exercises and activities should be avoided after knee surgery of any kind.

You should keep the joint well-rested in order to heal in a reasonable timeframe.

There are also some more specific things that you should avoid. Make sure first of all to listen to your doctor or physical therapist.

The knee should be bent out and stretched in the way that they have instructed and the exercise regime they give you upon release from the hospital.

You should avoid sitting on stools, sofas, soft chairs, rocking chairs, and chairs that are too low to the ground.

All of these will put unnecessary pressure on the joint. Only sit in chairs with a straight back and armrests.

While sitting at bedside or in a chair with your thigh supported, bend your knee as far as you can until your foot rests on the floor. With your foot lightly resting on the floor, slide your upper body forward in the chair to increase your knee bend. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Straighten your knee fully.

Repeat several times until your leg feels fatigued or until you can completely bend your knee.

Home Treatments To Manage Pain Swelling And Bruising After Total Knee Replacement Surgery

While you are still at the hospital, you will be made to wear compression stockings, and your doctor is likely to recommend that you continue wearing them for at least two weeks after discharge also. These stockings help reduce pain in the legs and also decrease the risk of developing a blood clot.

Keep the affected leg in an elevated position above the heart level for some time during the day for a couple of days will also help reduce the swelling and pain.

Applying patches and topical creams to the knee can also help bring down the pain and also make it possible to get a good nights sleep. Such topical creams should include active ingredients like menthol, capsaicin, or salicylates.

Can Hip And Knee Replacement Surgery Be Done At The Same Time

Q) Looking ahead it’s likely I’m going to need a second knee replacement and replacement of each of my hips. So, I wonder, has a knee and hip replacement ever been done at the same time? That would cut operations in half! Would it be possible, theoretically or practically?

A) In theory it’s possible to have both operations done at the same time , but there are a few things youll need to consider. Firstly, having two fairly large surgeries together will mean your recovery is likely to take longer, though it would probably still be shorter than total recovery time for having one surgery and full recovery followed by another.

Importantly, if you need both a hip and a knee replacement, and you’re worried about how youll cope with your rehabilitation, most surgeons will recommend having surgery on the hip first. Recovery after hip surgery doesn’t require as much rehab, so a painful knee won’t interfere too much with your recovery. If you do well after a hip replacement, you’re also more likely to cope successfully with the more intensive rehab required after knee surgery.

Another thing to bear in mind is that pain from the hip can spread to the knee, so replacing the hip joint may improve the pain in the knee or at least give a clearer idea of how much of the knee pain is coming from osteoarthritis in the knee.

An inversion table is a device that allows the user to suspend his body upside down or at an acute angle. Doing so shifts gravitational forces so pressure on the body is reversed from its habitual position. There are many purported benefits of inversion, including relief from lower back pain, sciatica, poor circulation and scoliosis. However, these are largely anecdotal, and there is little research to support any of these effects.

  • Get into the car from street level, not from a curb or doorstep. Have the front seat moved back as far as possible.
  • Car seats shouldn’t be too low. Sit on a pillow if you need to. Before you get into a car, make sure you can slide easily on the seat material.
  • Turn around so the back of your knee is touching the seat and sit down. As you turn, have someone help lift your legs into the car.

When riding in a car:

  • Break up long car rides. Stop, get out, and walk around every 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Do some of the simple exercises, like ankle pumps, while riding in the car. This helps reduce the risks of blood clots.
  • Take pain medicines before your first ride home.

When getting out of the car:

  • Turn your body as someone helps you lift your legs out of the car.
  • Scoot and lean forward.
  • Standing on both legs, use your crutches or walker to help you stand up.

Ask your health care provider when you can drive. You may need to wait up to 4 weeks after surgery. DO NOT drive until your provider says it is OK.
