Broken Hand Symptoms: How Do I Know If I Have A Broken Hand

Approximately 6 million people suffer a broken bone every year in the United States, and broken fingers are very common. The location and severity of the hand fracture will determine the symptoms the patient experiences and the available treatment options. So what does a broken hand feel like? Lets take a look at a few of the most common broken hand symptoms.

Fractured hand symptoms involving the metacarpals include pain, swelling, general tenderness along the site of the injury, and bruising. These metacarpal fractures symptoms may be more pronounced as the patient makes a fist or even loosely grips items. Metacarpal fractures may also give the involved fingers a shortened appearance. For example, Boxers fracture symptoms may include the knuckle appearing indented or crushed inward due to displacement along the neck of the metacarpal. Broken finger symptoms include pain, decreased range of motion, swelling, and sensitivity to even the lightest touch. Fractured finger symptoms may also include bruising, and its possible for the finger to appear deformed or misaligned. Broken thumb symptoms include swelling, bruising, sensitivity to the touch, and decreased range of motion. Some patients also report numbness or feelings of cold around the injury. In some cases, the hand or fingers may change colors, becoming pale or even blue, after a fracture of the hand. Patients may also notice other tactile sensations, such as tingling.

Symptoms Of A Broken Kneecap

A fractured kneecap happens when the bone cracks or breaks. Some symptoms include :

  • The front of the knee may look bruised and swollen.
  • Intense knee pain while standing or walking.
  • In displaced fractures, there will be a palpable deformity on the bone.
  • You may or may not be able to do a straight-leg raise.
  • Tingling or numbness on the foot of the injured side.

An X-ray will confirm the presence of a broken kneecap.

How To Treat A Bruised Knee

Your a diamond dear, They can

Most bruises, also known as contusions, are mild and heal on their own. However, more severe contusions can damage muscle tissue or bone, which may take longer to heal.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, rest, ice, compression, and elevation may help reduce symptoms and aid healing.

This article explores how bruises form, how to treat them, and how to tell if a bruise could be a sign of a more severe injury, such as a fracture.

A bruise or contusion forms when small blood vessels under the skin break, but the skin remains intact. Blood leaks out of these broken capillaries into the surrounding soft tissues, which causes discoloration.

There are three types of bruises:

  • subcutaneous, which occur just under the skins surface
  • intramuscular, occurring within the underlying muscle
  • bone bruises, which are an injury to the bone

A bone bruise is typically the most painful type of bruise. Doctors can only detect these using magnetic resonance imaging, as they are not easily visible on X-rays.

A bruise on the knee may occur because of damage to the skin, tendons, ligaments, or the bone of the knee cap. For example, a knee injury may cause a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament, in addition to bruising.

A bruise on the knee may appear black, blue, or purple on lighter skin, or dark purple or brown on darker skin. Bruises may change color as they heal, turning yellow or green.

A knee bruise may also trigger symptoms such as:

How Is A Fractured Knee Treated

Treatment for a fractured knee would depend on the complexity and severity of your injury. With this said, treatments for this type of injury are detailed below.

Nonsurgical

If the fracture is stable and affected bones in your knee are not displaced, you may not need to undergo surgery to correct the problem. You would typically need to wear a splint or a cast which would keep your injured knee immobile and prevent leg movements. The end goal of wearing a cast or splint is to keep broken bone ends in the right position while they mend and heal.

If your injury is not too severe, you may be able to bear weight on your leg even when wearing a cast or leg brace. But should the knee fracture be serious, you would need to keep your leg immobile for anything from 6 to 8 weeks and not bear any weight on an affected leg.

Surgical intervention

Should your knee bones be displaced, you would more than likely have to undergo surgery to put things right. If the displaced bones are far apart, recovery time for a fractured knee can take much longer or in a worst case scenario, might not heal and mend at all. The problem is that your thigh muscles which are attached to the top of a patella tend to pull displaced bones apart during the healing process. It is also worth noting that a doctor might want to wait until any slight skin damage and abrasions are fully healed before performing surgery on your fractured knee.

Signs Of A Broken Wrist

While you will have pain in your wrist regardless of if its broken or sprained, you will have significantly more pain if you break your wrist.

Some of the signs of a broken wrist include:

  • Swelling
  • Tenderness to touch

You might also experience tingling in your fingers.

Another sign to consider is if you are completely unable to move your wrist either because you have so much pain or because of the swelling.

Broken Knee Injuries Symptoms Diagnosis And Treatment

A broken knee can be due to several injuries, like broken knee cap , or broken leg bones or thigh bone near the knee joint. Road accidents, especially bike accidents, can cause the worst broken knees, with several knee fractures and torn knee ligaments and tendons. Such injuries are highly disastrous, and can have lifelong consequences. Even trivial knee injuries can be quite discomforting for a persons routine life. A broken knee is a serious knee injury, which causes severe disability and even deprives a person from any worthwhile employment for a prolonged period.

How Is A Kneecap Fracture Treated

  • Non-surgical treatment: if the fracture is stable, it may heal by itself. You will need to wear a cast to keep the leg straight and hold the bones in place so they can mend naturally
  • Surgery: if your kneecap fracture is not stable, you may need surgery to remove loose bone fragments and/or fix the fracture into place. You may also need to have knee realignment surgery

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries

The anterior cruciate ligament is often injured during sports activities. Athletes who participate in high demand sports like soccer, football, and basketball are more likely to injure their anterior cruciate ligaments. Changing direction rapidly or landing from a jump incorrectly can tear the ACL. About half of all injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament occur along with damage to other structures in the knee, such as articular cartilage, meniscus, or other ligaments.

Thigh Shaking/picking For Scar Tissue Management

Although it sounds almost overly-simple, knee or thigh shaking, which is also called soft tissue mobilization, allows the body to break up the unnecessary scar tissue. This will help to loosen things up at a microlevel preparing your knee for the next strategy for encouraging healthy tissue formation.

The key here is vigor. Prop your leg up either on your bed or on another chair, keeping your spine neutral. Take either one or two hands to vigorously shake/pick up your thigh to create results at the microlevel.

How Is A Patella Fracture Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms and what happened at the time of the injury. Then theyll examine your knee. They might have you try to extend your leg. If you cant, that will likely necessitate surgical intervention. They may also be able to feel the edges of the fractured bone pieces through your skin.

They will check for open wounds and for signs of hemarthrosis blood from the broken bone pieces collecting in your joint, which can cause excessive swelling. They will take X-rays or even a CT scan to define the fracture.

Can You Walk With A Broken Kneecap

Coming to question on whether an individual can walk with a broken kneecap then the answer is NO. The moment an individual incurs a broken kneecap there is immediate development of pain and swelling which may be quite significant. There may also be a visible deformity. In case of a displaced fracture, a visible gap may be noted at the area of the knee. The symptoms will be so significant that it would be virtually impossible for the individual to bear weight on the knee.

Thus it is quite understood that the individual will not be able to walk with a broken kneecap, although there will be no restriction in the motion of the ankle and toes. In conclusion, an individual with a broken kneecap will not be able to walk due to the fracture as there will be significant swelling and pain along with visible deformity which will prevent any weightbearing on the affected knee and thus prohibit the affected individual from walking after a broken kneecap.

Even though an individual with a broken kneecap will not be able to walk, the range of motion of the toes and ankles remain unaffected due to the injury that caused the fracture in the first place.

Other Treatment Options For Knee Sprain

RICE Therapy: If you have suffered a sprained knee, it is important to allow a period of rest to allow the knee to heal. For mild to moderate sprains, doctors recommend RICE therapy. This includes R , I , C , and E .

Pain Medications: You can use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. They provide short-term relief of pain and swelling. These drugs can help reduce symptoms and allow you to begin a rehabilitation exercise program. This is important to strengthen and stabilize the knee and prevent you from injuring it again.2

Bracing: Sometimes doctors recommend wearing a knee brace for a short period. This takes the load off the ligaments and supports the knee while it heals.2

Surgery: A torn ligament sometimes needs surgical repair. This can usually be done with a minimally-invasive approach called arthroscopy. A tiny camera is inserted into the joint to guide the surgeon in repairing the ligament.2

Infected Knee: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

When surgical procedures are involved, there are often visible scars left on the knee. Although modern knee surgery procedures have advanced in ways to minimize visible scarring on the skin, it is almost impossible to be left with none.

How deep your scar tissue is and the type of surgery involved will affect how your scar heals over time. Maintaining a healthy diet full of foods rich in nutrients essential to scar healingsuch as copper, zinc, and vitamin Awill help the healing process. Foods rich in vitamin C can help with the production of collagen as well.

Of course, getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of water to hydrate your skin is essential to your body healing properly over time. You can also try applying certain essential oils that have been found to promote healthy skin regeneration. Essential oils such as helichrysum, lavender, frankincense, geranium, and tea tree oil are touted to have skin healing properties.

Breaking Up Scar Tissue With Physical Therapy

Pain and injuries are a part of life, but sometimes, they can leave behind thick, fibrous tissue known as scar tissue. Scar tissue is what forms in the body where your body is healing from a deep cut, such as what might be used in surgery. Scar tissue itself isnt harmful, but its stiffness causes difficulties with range of motion and can be painful.

Scar tissue can linger in your body for a long time without treatment. However, health care professionals, such as physical therapists, can help you break up scar tissue so you can recover from your surgery or injury with less pain and stiffness.

You Cant Straighten Your Knee Or Leg

If you have trouble straightening your leg or it hurts to do so, you probably have a serious knee injury.

To test this, start in a seated position and try to lift your lower leg using your own leg muscles. You may still be able to bear weight and walk slowly and carefully without assistance, but will probably require assistance to lift your lower leg and fully extend your injured knee, says Dr. Brown.

Patella fractures, quadriceps tendon tears, and patellar tendon tears all tend to be associated with an inability to straighten the leg.

Use a knee immobilizer to hold the knee in a straight position and help with pain relief. This also makes it easier to move about until your appointment with an orthopedic surgeon, he adds.

Another test is to lie down and try to straighten your leg. The goal is to get your knee to lie flat. This might be difficult or impossible to do due to the pain, but what you should watch out for is a total inability to straighten your knee.

Some of the problems that could cause a locked knee include meniscus tears or a torn ACL. The key is to determine whether you cant straighten your knee due to sheer pain or physical blockage. If you feel blocked, then we recommend getting in touch with a doctor sooner rather than later.

On the flip side, you might have trouble bending your knee. If your knee feels stuck in any way, and the feeling doesnt go away within a few hours, you could be experiencing something more severe.
