With Curcumin Bioavailability Is Key
Information published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reveals that people taking up to 8,000 mg of curcumin per day had very low or undetectable amounts of this substance in their plasma and tissues. Only one subject taking between 10,000-12,000 mgs had a detectable amount.
A review published in the journal Foods in October 2017 supports this assertion and goes on to explain that the body isnt able to adequately use curcumin when ingested on its own. This is due in part to poor absorption. However, rapid metabolism and rapid elimination of this substance contributes to this issue as well.
Finding a way to combat these issues is the key to creating a curcumin supplement that offers users the maximum amount of curcumin possible. One option that has been found highly effective is combining curcumin with piperine. Piperine is an active component of black pepper and increases curcumins bioavailability by 2,000%. Choosing a supplement that includes both of these substances offers patients greater access to curcumins healthful effects.

How Does Chondroitin Sulfate Help Osteoarthritis Patients
Chondroitin sulfate can provide additional pain relief for some people with knee and hand osteoarthritis. A study published in the Journal of Rheumatology found that Chondroitin sulfate is effective in treating OA when used for 3 months. The benefits are rather modest, offering 8-10% improvement.
However, it can be the ideal alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients who cannot take NSAIDs but need a long-term treatment plan. A 1996 study compared the anti-inflammatory efficacy of chondroitin sulfate with diclofenac sodium in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The study, which was published in The Journal of Rheumatology, found that treatment with chondroitin sulfate may be slower, but more effective in the long run. Patients treated with the NSAID showed prompt and plain reduction of clinical symptoms, which, however, reappeared after the end of treatment. On the other hand, in patients treated with chondroitin sulfate, therapeutic response appeared later in time but lasted for up to 3 months after the end of treatment.
In a 1-year, randomized, controlled pilot study which included 42 patients of both sexes, scientists found that oral chondroitin 4- and 6-sulfate is an effective and safe symptomatic slow-acting drug for the treatment of knee OA.

Nuzena Joint Support Best Budget Joint Health Supplements
Nuzena joint support makes it onto our best joint supplements list due to its price point, its not the best in terms of ingredients, but it is definitely the best joint supplement available for under $40. Something thats true of a lot of Nuzenas range is that theyre good value for money. They use a lot of the ingredients we see in other supplements, some are very well dosed with only one ingredient bromelain being under the ideal range. The supplement seems to be more focused on reducing joint pain rather than optimising health, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. Wed recommend taking Nuzena joint support with an omega 3 supplement.
Nuzena use a heavy dose of curcumin from turmeric extracts and a heavy dose of glucosamine and chondroitin. They also nail the dosage of Boswellia which has been shown to be good for joint arthritis, particularly inflammation with trial participants showing notably improved mobility. The interesting ingredient for Nuzena is Quercetin which works by inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines meaning that your joints wont swell as much. Its been tested specifically for arthritis rather than for all around joint health. All in all Nuzena make great joint supplements, and the missing ingredients can easily be explained by their lower price point.

How To Use Chondroitin Sulfate And Glucosamine Supplements For Arthritis
Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine Supplements for Arthritis
While current scientific data offers no conclusive evidence that glucosamine sulfate or chondroitin sulfate prevents or reverses the process of joint degeneration that leads to osteoarthritis, they can slow down the progression of the disease. These supplements can be a part of your osteoarthritis treatment, especially if you want to limit dependence on NSAIDs.
Typical dosage is 1500mg for glucosamine sulfate and 1200mg for chondroitin sulfate, taken once daily. The larger dosage of glucosamine sulfate can be attributed to the fact that glucosamine sulfate doesnt survive the digestive tract too well to reach the joints. This is why, topically applied products that bypasses digestion may be worth looking into as they will easily achieve targeted delivery.
A clinical trial studying the effects of using a topical cream containing glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, and camphor for osteoarthritis of the knee found that topical use brought relief from pain of osteoarthritis in 4 weeks.
Bear in mind chondroitin and glucosamine supplements alone or in combination may not work for everyone with osteoarthritis. Many patients find it is best to use these nutritional supplements in conjunction with other non-surgical treatments like NSAIDs, stretching exercises and water therapy.

Natural Supplements To Consider
A plant from the ginger family, turmeric is often used in South Asian cuisine, such as curry. It contains curcumin, the key ingredient that can help decrease inflammation. To be effective as either a supplement or food and not simply metabolized and excreted turmeric should be absorbed with fatty oils, such as avocado or olive oil, and black pepper, which most supplements contain.
I recommend making turmeric a part of your daily diet for three to six months to gauge any benefits. Turmeric supplements can be expensive, and inflammation can be treated in other ways. So, if your pain hasnt decreased after this amount of time, we can try something else
2. Cherry juice extract
Anthocyanin supplies both the red coloring and anti-inflammatory benefits in cherries and other red fruits and vegetables. Most of my patients who say cherry juice helps relieve their pain drink about one glass a day, but you can eat a handful of cherries daily or take supplements that contain the pure juice extract cherries are high in anthocyanin. However, because of its high sugar content, I do not recommend cherry juice for diabetic patients.
3. Omega-3 fatty acids
Most patients I see have taken these supplements before without good results. For better absorption I recommend incorporating omega-3s into your diet through foods such as tuna, salmon, sardines, tofu, walnuts, and flaxseeds.
5. Chondroitin and glucosamine
7. Cannabidiol oil
Current Therapies For Management Of Knee Oa
There are a large number of treatments of varying efficacy and faith for OA. The non-pharmacological treatments include education, exercise, physiotherapy, weight loss, physical aids and surgical joint replacements . Massage with and without pharmacological agents may also be beneficial. Vitamins and herbs have also been used. A number of recommendations on the treatments for OA made by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons are available at the website .
Several pharmacological agents have been used for management of OA. Temporary pain relief and hence improvement in function may be obtained with analgesics but this is not specific to OA. NSAIDs are used orally and topically because they have some anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. They are also strongly recommended by AAOS. However, they may have severe adverse effects upon prolonged use. These issues have been discussed in recent reviews and will not be retraced here . There are several commercial preparations such Instaflex, Sierrasil, hyaluronic acid and Aquamin of limited proven usefulness . However, the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate is the most promising. This treatment may be efficacious for pain relief, functional improvement and also result in less joint space narrowing .
